June Gloom and the Bed That Never Quite Dries

Folding freshly washed bed sheets, WaveMAX Laundry Long Beach CA

Newcomers to Long Beach expect summer to be the dry season. Then June arrives, the sky goes gray by eight in the morning and stays that way until two in the afternoon, and the bedroom feels damp in a way it never did in February.

June gloom is not a rumor and it is not a bad month. It is a reliable seasonal pattern, and it makes early summer the dampest stretch of the year here, which is the opposite of what most people assume.

What the marine layer actually is

Cool ocean air sits underneath warmer air above it. That warm layer acts like a lid, trapping the moist marine air near the surface, and the trapped layer becomes low cloud and fog that pushes inland overnight and burns off partway through the day.

The relevant part for your laundry is that the air near the ground is holding a great deal of moisture, and it does so for weeks at a stretch rather than for an afternoon.

This is a different problem from Gulf Coast humidity, which comes with heat. Here it comes with cool, and cool damp is sneakier, because nothing about the room feels oppressive. It just quietly never dries.

Why the bed notices

Cotton is hygroscopic. It pulls moisture out of the surrounding air and holds it, reaching equilibrium with the room rather than with whatever your dryer did.

In a marine layer stretch, that equilibrium is high. A sheet that came out of the dryer bone dry is carrying meaningful moisture again within hours, sitting on the bed.

Add what you put into it overnight, and in a cool room with no strong evaporation driving it out, the bed does not fully dry between nights. Mildew does not need standing water, only fabric that stays damp, and June through early July is exactly when that condition holds.

The tell is a bed that smells faintly sour by Thursday when the same sheets were fine all winter.

The habits that fix most of it

Stop making the bed in the morning. Pull the covers all the way back and leave it open at least half an hour. A bed made at seven traps the whole night’s moisture under the comforter until bedtime, and in a cool damp room it has nowhere to go all day. This is free and it does more than anything else here.

Run a fan in the bedroom during the day. Air movement is what you have instead of dry air. It matters more in a cool damp climate than in a hot one, because you get no help from heat driving evaporation.

Open the windows in the afternoon, not the morning. The marine layer is thickest overnight and early. Once it burns off, the outside air is drier than the inside air, and that is the window to air the house. Morning is when you are pulling damp air in.

Consider a bedroom dehumidifier for June and July. Under 50 percent is the target. It also makes the room inhospitable to dust mites, which need humidity above roughly that level to survive and which do well in a coastal climate.

Do not push the bed flat against an exterior wall. That wall runs cooler and collects condensation. A few inches of gap lets air move.

Washing during the gloom

Two changes, both specific to cool damp rather than general laundry advice.

Wash bedding warm rather than cold through June and July. Cold water leaves body oil in the fabric, and in a room where nothing fully dries, that oil is what the mildew is living on.

Do not air dry laundry indoors during the season. One load holds a surprising amount of water and all of it goes into your air, which slows the drying of the bed you are trying to keep dry. This is the mistake that quietly makes the problem worse, and it is most tempting in exactly the weeks it hurts most.

The item that defeats a home machine

The recurring failure here is a comforter that never dries all the way through. Packed into a household dryer it cannot tumble, so the outside dries and the core does not, and the core is where a musty smell starts and where it survives every subsequent wash.

The machines at our self-service laundry on East 7th have the drum size for a full comforter to move freely and a much higher extraction speed, which pulls far more water out before drying even begins. For bedding that has already gone musty through a gloomy June, that combination is usually what resets it.

The short version

June gloom makes early summer the dampest season here, and it is cool damp rather than hot humid, so nothing feels wrong while your bed slowly stops drying between nights. Leave the bed open every morning, run a fan, and open the windows in the afternoon rather than the morning. Wash bedding warm rather than cold, never air dry laundry indoors during the season, and squeeze the middle of thick items before trusting they are dry.
