An evening around a fire pit puts woodsmoke into a fleece, and three weeks later the fleece still smells of it after two washes. That is not a failure of detergent. Smoke is not sitting on the surface of the fabric, it has gone into the fibre and bonded there, and getting it out again takes a specific order of operations.

What woodsmoke actually is once it is in a fabric
Woodsmoke is three separate things that end up in clothing together, and they behave very differently from each other.
The first is fine particulate, soot small enough to settle down inside the weave rather than resting on top of it. Shaking and brushing move the large particles and none of the small ones.
The second is creosote and the related compounds, which are oily and tarry. Those are the ones that matter. They condense out of the smoke onto any cool surface, and a person standing near a fire on a cool evening is a cool surface.
Oily compounds bond to synthetic fibre especially well, because polyester and nylon are themselves oil derived and have an affinity for oils. That is why a fleece holds woodsmoke and a cotton shirt holds far less of it.
The third group is water soluble compounds, which is the part an ordinary wash genuinely removes. That is why a wash always makes it better and never makes it gone.
So the smell left after washing is the oily fraction, still bonded into the fibre and releasing slowly for weeks.
Fresh smoke and set smoke
There is a real difference between smoke from last night and smoke from last month, and it changes how much work you are in for.
Fresh woodsmoke is still mostly loose in the fabric. Hang the garment outdoors in moving air for a day and a great deal of it simply leaves on its own.
Set smoke has had time, and usually heat as well. The oily fraction has migrated into the fibre, and in a synthetic it has partly gone into the polymer rather than sitting on it.
Heat is the thing that sets it, and the most common source of that heat is a dryer. A garment that went through a hot dry cycle while it still smelled of smoke is a much harder job afterwards.
Time alone sets it too, more slowly, and fastest inside a closed bag or a stuffed sack where nothing gets any air.
The practical rule is that the first day is worth more than everything you do in the three weeks after it.
Air it outdoors before anything else
The order is air, then soak, then wash. Skipping the first step makes both of the others work harder for a worse result.
Hang everything outside where the air is moving. A porch, a line, a railing, anywhere that is not still.
Give it a full day if you can, and turn things inside out partway through so both faces get the same treatment.
Do not do this in a garage or a basement. Still air in a closed space means the smoke leaves the fabric and goes straight back into it, and into everything else being stored in there.
Sunlight helps a little and is not really the point. Air movement is the point.
A light mist of water over a heavy item helps, because evaporating water carries volatile compounds away with it as it goes. Do not soak anything at this stage.
The soak that does most of the work
The soak is the step people skip, and with woodsmoke it is the step that changes the outcome.
Fill a tub or a deep sink with warm water, not hot, and stir in a cup of baking soda. Submerge the garment completely and leave it for several hours or overnight.
Baking soda is mildly alkaline, which helps break down the acidic and oily side of what woodsmoke leaves behind, and it is safe on nearly everything.
White vinegar is the alternative, roughly a cup in a full tub, working on a different chemistry. Use one or the other and never both together, since they cancel each other out and you get neither.
For colourfast items an oxygen based powder dissolved in warm water is the strongest of the three, and it is the one to reach for on a heavy fleece or a jacket lining.
Weigh the garment down with something so it stays under the surface. A fleece floats, and the part sitting above the water gets nothing at all.
Washing it, and staying away from heat
Wash after the soak rather than instead of it, using the warmest water the garment tolerates.
Add half a cup of baking soda to the wash alongside a normal dose of detergent.
An enzyme detergent earns its place here, because part of what is in the fabric is organic residue that enzymes will break apart.
Then the part that decides everything. Take the garment out and smell it while it is still damp, before any heat gets near it.
If any woodsmoke is left, soak it again or wash it again. Repeating is normal on a heavy item, and two or three rounds on a fleece is not unusual at all.
Only once it is genuinely clean does it go anywhere near a dryer, because dryer heat bakes whatever remains into the fibre and shuts the door on it. Air drying outdoors is the better option at this stage anyway.
The fabrics that hold it worst
Fleece holds woodsmoke worse than anything else by a wide margin. It is synthetic, it has an affinity for oils, and its whole construction is a raised pile with an enormous surface area for smoke to settle into.
Anything with a pile behaves the same way. Sherpa linings, brushed sweatshirts, velour, and the blanket that lives on a chair outdoors.
Wool holds it because wool is porous and absorbent, and because wool items tend to be the ones people are least willing to wash properly.
Down holds it inside the fill, where nothing done at the surface can reach, so a down jacket that has been to a few fires needs a full wash rather than an airing.
Cotton is the easy one. Woven cotton releases smoke reasonably well and puts up with hot water and repeated washing, which is most of the battle won.
Waterproof shells sit in between. The residue is on a coating rather than inside a fibre, so it wipes and washes off more readily than fleece does, and heat still sets whatever is left.
Hair, hats and the things nobody washes
When a smell keeps coming back, it is almost always because something in the rotation never gets cleaned.
Hair holds woodsmoke heavily and reintroduces it to a pillow, a hood and a collar every night until it gets washed.
Hats and beanies almost never get washed and go straight back on the next evening. The same is true of gloves, scarves and the lining inside a hood.
Outerwear is the big one. A jacket worn to every fire all autumn accumulates it, and then passes it on to whatever it hangs against on a coat rack indoors.
Bags and blankets that live in a car carry it around indefinitely and share it with everything they touch.
And some things do not recover. Foam absorbs smoke through its whole volume and cannot be rinsed through, and anything that went through repeated hot drying with smoke still in it is past saving, because by then the fibre and the compound behave as one material.
The Wyoming part
The fire season here is long, which is the local reason this comes up as often as it does. Evenings turn cool early in autumn and stay comfortable enough to sit outside for months, and a cool evening is exactly when somebody lights a fire.
Cool air is also what makes the residue stick. Warm smoke rising into cold air condenses its oily fraction out quickly, and the nearest cool surface for it to condense onto is the person sitting a few feet away in a fleece.
Still evenings make it worse again. Smoke that would blow away on a windy night instead settles and hangs around the fire at about head height, so everyone there gets a long slow exposure rather than a brief one.
The seasonal pattern matters as well. Autumn here is when people are outdoors in the evening wearing precisely the clothing that holds woodsmoke worst, which is fleece, flannel and a hooded sweatshirt, and it is the same weeks those items come out of storage and go into constant rotation without being washed much.
Where a smoke load gets enough water
Getting smoke out of a bulky garment is a question of soaking and rinsing volume more than anything else.
