Technical fabric is engineered to move sweat off the skin and dry in minutes, and that same construction is why a jersey that looks perfectly clean can still smell after a wash. Kit does not respond to ordinary laundry habits, and the two things most people do to it, hot water and fabric softener, are precisely the two that ruin it.

What technical fabric is actually made of
Almost all of it is polyester, nylon or polypropylene, often with a little elastane blended in for stretch.
Those fibres do not absorb water. A cotton fibre takes water into itself, while a synthetic carries it along the surface and passes it along.
That is the entire point of the material. Moisture travels through to the outer face, spreads out over a wide area and evaporates, which is why the garment dries so fast.
The construction is usually knitted rather than woven, often with a fine channelled yarn or a shaped fibre cross section to move liquid faster.
Elastane supplies shape and recovery, and it is by some distance the most fragile component in the garment.
A water repellent finish may sit on top of all that on a shell or a jacket, and it is a surface treatment rather than a property of the fibre.
Why technical fabric holds smell and cotton does not
Sweat is mostly water and salts, and it also carries body oils and skin lipids out with it.
The water soluble part rinses out of anything easily. The oils are where the trouble sits.
Polyester is oil attracting. Body oils spread across the fibre surface and stay there, and cool water with an ordinary detergent dose does not lift them off.
Cotton absorbs water and swells, which lets a wash flush right through the fibre. A synthetic does not swell, so a wash largely rinses the outside of it.
The residue therefore stays, accumulates over many wears, and produces the odour that returns the moment the garment warms up on a body again.
That is why kit can look clean, smell like nothing in a drawer, and smell strongly ten minutes into a ride.
Fabric softener is the worst thing you can put on it
Softener works by depositing a waxy coating on fibres so they feel smooth against the hand.
On cotton that is a cosmetic decision. On technical fabric it is a direct attack on the function you paid for.
The coating fills the spaces between fibres and blocks the channels that move moisture, so the garment stops wicking and starts holding sweat against you.
It is oily in itself, so it gives the existing oil residue something to bond to and makes the odour problem worse rather than better.
Dryer sheets do the same damage by a different route, and they leave film on the lint screen as a bonus.
The effect is cumulative and it reverses only slowly, through repeated washing with nothing added.
Cool water and a proper rinse
Wash technical fabric cool to lukewarm and no hotter. Heat is a separate problem and it gets its own section below.
Turn everything inside out. The inner face is where the oils are, and it is the side that needs to meet the water.
Use less detergent than feels right, not more. Excess detergent does not rinse cleanly out of synthetics and becomes another residue that traps odour.
A liquid works better than a powder here, since undissolved powder lodges in a fine knit and stays there.
Add a rinse. This matters more than anything you put into the wash, because the goal is carrying residue away rather than merely dissolving it.
For kit that already smells, soak it first in cool water with a cup of white vinegar for half an hour, then wash normally with nothing else added. A detergent made specifically to lift oils out of synthetics is the other route.
Keep bleach away from it entirely. It attacks elastane and it damages colour on synthetics.
Heat and what it does to elastic
Elastane begins losing its elasticity at temperatures a hot wash and a hot dryer both reach comfortably.
Once it has gone the waistband is slack, the cuffs no longer sit where they should, and a compression garment has stopped compressing. Nothing brings that back.
Polyester itself can glaze or pill under high heat, which is the shiny worn patch on the shoulders of an old jersey.
Any printed logo, taped seam or bonded panel is held on with adhesive, and adhesive gives way to heat long before the fabric does.
So no hot wash, no hot dryer, and nothing draped over a radiator.
The consolation is that this material barely needs a dryer at all. Hung on a hanger it dries faster than a dryer cycle takes to run.
Water repellent finishes
A repellent finish sits on the outside of a shell or jacket and it is what makes water bead up and roll away.
Detergent residue kills it first. Any surfactant left in the fabric attracts water and defeats the finish, which is why a jacket that has stopped beading often needs rinsing rather than replacing.
Wash shells on their own with a small amount of plain detergent and an extra rinse, or with a product made for the purpose.
Softener destroys a repellent finish completely and immediately, which is worth knowing before somebody helpfully washes it for you.
Gentle warmth reactivates a finish that is still present. A short tumble on low, or an iron on a low setting with a cloth in between, often brings the beading back.
When it has genuinely worn away, a spray on or wash in treatment restores it, applied to a clean garment rather than a dirty one.
Wash it promptly rather than leaving it in a bag
The habit that matters most with technical fabric is simply not leaving kit balled up and damp.
Damp synthetic in a closed bag in warm weather develops a smell within hours, and that smell is far harder to shift than fresh sweat ever is.
If you cannot wash it straight away, at least get it out of the bag and hang it up. A dry garment waiting for a wash is fine. A damp one is not.
Rinsing kit in cool water the moment you get home, with no detergent at all, removes most of the salt and a useful share of the oil, and buys you a day.
Never leave it in a car. Heat accelerates every process described above.
Wash technical fabric after each use rather than after several. The residue builds, and it is the build up that eventually will not come out.
The Tempe part
Desert heat means sweat volume, and sweat volume means salt. Riding or running here leaves a great deal more salt in a garment than the same effort would in a mild climate, and dried salt stiffens a fine knit and abrades it from the inside as the fabric flexes.
That argues strongly for rinsing kit in plain cool water as soon as you get in, even on days when a proper wash is not happening. It costs a minute and removes the bulk of what is in there.
Ultraviolet intensity is the second factor and it is a real one for synthetics. Sunlight breaks down elastane and fades dye on polyester, so drying kit on a line in full sun costs you exactly the same elasticity a hot dryer would. Dry it in shade, which in air this dry is barely any slower.
Hard water works against a proper rinse, which is the step that matters most for this material. Mineral in the supply leaves deposit on synthetic fibre, and that deposit gives the oils something to cling to, so an extra rinse earns more here than it would in a soft water area.
Fine airborne dust is the last one. It settles into a damp jersey and works its way into the knit, so kit worn on a windy day is better rinsed while it is still wet than dealt with once it has dried stiff.

Getting residue out of a synthetic is a question of water volume rather than detergent.
