Ironing board covers are treated as scenery. They come with the board, they get scorched and stained, and they stay there for years while quietly making every garment that touches them worse.

What ironing board covers are actually doing
A cover has two jobs and both are easy to miss.
It provides a smooth, slightly padded surface so the iron presses fabric against something forgiving rather than against a hard metal mesh. Without padding, the mesh pattern transfers into the garment and the iron rides on the high points.
And on most modern covers, a metallic or coated top layer reflects heat back up through the fabric, so the garment is pressed from both sides at once. That is why a good cover genuinely speeds up ironing rather than being a nicety.
A cover that is thin, scorched, or dirty stops doing either. The padding has compressed, the reflective layer has burned off, and whatever is on the surface is being pressed into your clothes.
What accumulates on one
The brown and yellow patches are more than scorching.
Starch and spray sizing build up in layers, caramelise under heat, and go brown. That deposit then transfers to the next light-coloured shirt that touches it.
Fabric softener residue comes off garments and collects on the cover.
Mineral scale spat out by a steam iron leaves white or rust-coloured deposits.
Dye lifts from dark garments under heat and moisture and transfers to the cover, then to the next pale item.
None of this is visible as a problem until a white shirt comes off the board with a mark on it, at which point people usually blame the iron.
Washing the cover
Most fabric covers are washable and most people have never taken one off.
Check the label, since covers with a foil or heavy silicone coating often should not be immersed.
Wash on warm rather than hot, on a gentle cycle. Hot water shrinks a cover, and a shrunken cover will not go back on the board, which is the most common way people end up buying a new one.
Use a small dose of mild detergent and no fabric softener, since softener leaves exactly the coating you are trying to remove.
Treat scorched and starch-stained areas first with a paste of oxygen bleach and a little water, left for an hour, which lifts caramelised starch better than any wash cycle.
Add an extra rinse.
Drying and refitting
Air dry or tumble on low. High heat shrinks the cover and can damage the reflective coating.
Put it back on while it is still slightly damp. This is the trick that matters: damp fabric stretches, and it dries taut over the board rather than baggy, which is exactly the fit you want.
Pull the drawstring or clips tight while damp and let it finish drying in place.
A loose cover wrinkles under the iron and presses those wrinkles into your clothes, so a taut fit is functional rather than cosmetic.
When to replace it
Covers wear out faster than people think and they are inexpensive.
Replace it when the padding underneath has compressed and you can feel the mesh through it.
Replace it when the surface is scorched through, since a burned reflective layer no longer reflects and a burned patch transfers.
Replace it at any tear, which will catch fabric and buttons.
Replace the padding underneath as well as the top cover. Compressed padding is the failure people never address, and a new cover over flat padding still presses badly.
Once a year is reasonable for a board in regular use.
The iron plate, which is the other half
A clean cover under a dirty iron achieves nothing.
Starch and melted synthetic build up on the soleplate, which makes the iron drag rather than glide and leaves brown streaks.
Clean it cold with a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water on a cloth, wiped along the plate and then wiped clean with plain water. Never anything abrasive on a coated plate.
For melted synthetic, warm the iron slightly and rub the plate on a piece of clean cotton, or use a purpose-made soleplate cleaner.
Clean the steam holes with a cotton bud, since they clog with scale and then spit rusty water at exactly the wrong moment.
The scale problem inside the iron
Steam irons build limescale internally, and scale is what produces the sudden brown spit onto a white shirt.
Empty the reservoir after every session rather than leaving water standing in it, which is where deposits form.
Descale on the schedule in the manual, or every couple of months in a hard water area.
Distilled or filtered water prevents the problem outright and costs very little. Check the manual first, since a few irons are designed to need some mineral content.
Never use vinegar inside an iron unless the manufacturer says to, since it damages the internal components on many models.
The Southgate part
Hard water is the local factor and it drives most of this.
Water across much of southeast Michigan carries a meaningful mineral load, and a steam iron concentrates those minerals as the water evaporates. Scale builds inside the reservoir and in the steam holes, and it eventually comes out as rust-coloured spitting onto whatever is on the board. It also deposits on the cover as white or orange marks.
Using filtered or distilled water in the iron is the single most effective local adjustment, and it costs almost nothing compared with replacing a scorched shirt.
The second factor is the heating season. Homes here run heating for five or six months, and the dry indoor air that produces means more static, more creasing, and considerably more ironing than in the summer. That is when covers get their heaviest use and when the annual check is worth doing, at the start of the season rather than the end.
Humidity in summer works the other way, and it is worth knowing that a cover left damp in a humid basement laundry can develop mildew, which then transfers. Dry it fully before it goes back on.
Where the residue comes out
A cover, and the clothes it has been marking, both need enough water volume to carry starch and mineral residue away rather than redistribute it, and a warm cycle rather than a hot one.
