\"Wash<\/figure>\n

Cheer and dance uniforms are the most expensive clothing in most families’ houses and the most fragile, and they are handed to teenagers who put them in a duffel bag on a gym floor.<\/p>\n

They are also built from materials that break almost every normal laundry rule. Heat is the enemy, agitation is the enemy, and the two things people reach for on a stubborn stain will destroy the garment outright.<\/p>\n

What these uniforms are actually made of<\/h2>\n

Understanding the construction explains every rule that follows.<\/p>\n

Spandex or elastane<\/strong> is what gives the fit. It is a synthetic elastic fiber, and it has one weakness: heat destroys it. Permanently, cumulatively, and invisibly at first. A uniform that has lost its stretch has usually been cooked rather than worn out.<\/p>\n

Polyester<\/strong> makes up the body of most shells. Durable, holds color, holds body oil and odor.<\/p>\n

Sequins and rhinestones<\/strong> are almost never sewn on. They are attached with heat-activated adhesive, which means anything hot enough to matter is hot enough to release them. Loose stones in the bottom of a dryer are a familiar and expensive sight.<\/p>\n

Metallic and foil detailing<\/strong> is a thin coating over fabric. It cracks and flakes with abrasion and heat.<\/p>\n

Embroidered appliques and screen printing<\/strong> crack, peel, and pull with agitation and high heat.<\/p>\n

The rules, in order of how much money they save<\/h2>\n

1. Never put it in a dryer.<\/strong> Not on low, not for a few minutes. Heat kills the spandex, releases the rhinestone adhesive, and cracks the metallic detail. This one rule protects the garment more than everything else combined.<\/p>\n

2. Turn it inside out before it goes anywhere near water.<\/strong> This puts the decorative surface against itself instead of against the drum. Rhinestones abrade each other, but far less than they abrade against a machine wall.<\/p>\n

3. Use a mesh garment bag,<\/strong> and a proper zippered one rather than a knotted pillowcase. It keeps hooks, clasps, and stones from catching on anything.<\/p>\n

4. Cold water only.<\/strong> Always. Warm water is enough to soften the adhesive under stones over repeated washes.<\/p>\n

5. Gentle or delicate cycle,<\/strong> and if the machine has a hand wash setting, use that.<\/p>\n

6. Never chlorine bleach.<\/strong> It dissolves spandex, and once the spandex goes the garment does not fit and cannot be fixed.<\/p>\n

7. Never fabric softener.<\/strong> The coating breaks down elastic fibers over time and it seals odor into polyester rather than removing it.<\/p>\n

Hand washing, which is the right answer for most of these<\/h2>\n

It takes ten minutes and it is far gentler than any machine.<\/p>\n

Fill a sink or a tub with cold water and a small amount of gentle detergent. Something made for delicates or for wool works well, and regular detergent at half strength is fine.<\/p>\n

Submerge the garment inside out and press it gently under water with your hands. Do not wring, do not twist, do not scrub. Agitation is what pulls stones and stretches seams.<\/p>\n

Let it sit five to ten minutes. Time does the work.<\/p>\n

Drain, refill with clean cold water, and press again to rinse. Repeat until no suds appear. Detergent left in spandex breaks it down and holds odor.<\/p>\n

Lift it out supporting the whole garment, because wet fabric is heavy and lifting by one shoulder stretches the seam.<\/p>\n

Drying it correctly<\/h2>\n

Press the water out between two clean towels. Lay the garment flat on a towel, roll the towel up with the garment inside, and press. Do not wring.<\/p>\n

Then dry it flat, on a fresh dry towel, out of direct sun. Sun fades the color and degrades the elastic.<\/p>\n

Do not hang it wet. A wet uniform on a hanger stretches under its own weight and the shoulders never recover.<\/p>\n

Turn it over partway through so both sides dry evenly. Expect it to take overnight.<\/p>\n

Stains, without ruining anything<\/h2>\n

The instinct on a competition uniform is to scrub hard, and scrubbing is precisely what pulls stones and breaks fibers.<\/p>\n

Sweat and body oil,<\/strong> which is the main one. A soak in cold water with a small amount of enzyme detergent, thirty minutes, handles most of it. For a set-in underarm mark, a paste of baking soda and a little water dabbed on and left twenty minutes, then rinsed.<\/p>\n

Makeup, which is nearly universal.<\/strong> Foundation and bronzer on a collar is an oil stain. A tiny amount of liquid dish soap dabbed on with a fingertip, left ten minutes, then rinsed cold. Micellar water on a cotton pad also lifts foundation surprisingly well and is gentler on the fabric.<\/p>\n

Hairspray and glitter spray,<\/strong> which build up as a stiff film. Rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad, dabbed, then rinsed. Keep alcohol away from stones and metallic detail, because it can attack some adhesives.<\/p>\n

Floor marks from a gym.<\/strong> Usually a mix of dirt and rubber oil. Dish soap, dabbed, patience.<\/p>\n

Blood from a mat burn.<\/strong> Cold water only. Hydrogen peroxide on a white section, tested on a seam first.<\/p>\n

In all cases, work from the back of the fabric where you can, dab rather than rub, and rinse thoroughly rather than letting the treatment dry in place.<\/p>\n

Storage between competitions<\/h2>\n

Hang it on a padded hanger, not a wire one. Wire hangers make shoulder points that show under stage lighting.<\/p>\n

Store it in a garment bag, which keeps dust off the stones and keeps hooks from catching on other clothing.<\/p>\n

Confirm it is completely dry first. A uniform bagged even slightly damp will smell by the next competition and can mildew.<\/p>\n

Do not store it in a car or a garage in this climate. San Antonio heat degrades spandex and softens rhinestone adhesive without anyone opening the bag.<\/p>\n

Check the stones after every few wears. One re-glued stone is a two minute job with fabric adhesive. Twenty missing stones is a repair bill.<\/p>\n

Practice wear is a different category<\/h2>\n

Practice clothes are plain polyester and spandex with no decoration, they get worn far more, and they need the opposite treatment: wash them warm with enzyme detergent to actually remove body oil, and skip the delicate handling.<\/p>\n

Keep the two separated. Running a decorated uniform in with practice wear is how stones come off.<\/p>\n

Where the machines help<\/h2>\n

The place a household machine causes real damage is agitation and drum size. A small drum means a decorated garment is pressed against the wall for the entire cycle, which is abrasion no gentle setting can undo, and a top loader with a center agitator will catch anything with a hook or a stone on it.<\/p>\n
