If your house runs an evaporative cooler, you already know it behaves nothing like refrigerated air. It is cheaper to run, it moves a lot of air, and it works beautifully in May and turns into a damp disappointment in August.<\/p>\n

What most people have not connected is what it is doing to their bedding.<\/p>\n

How a swamp cooler changes the room<\/h2>\n

An evaporative cooler works by pulling outside air through wet pads. Water evaporates, evaporation absorbs heat, and the air that comes out the other side is cooler. It is elegant and it is genuinely efficient in a dry climate.<\/p>\n

The cost is that the same process puts that water into your air. A cooler running through a west Phoenix afternoon can lift indoor relative humidity substantially above what it is outside, which is the entire mechanism and not a malfunction.<\/p>\n

That is fine for the house in general. It matters for bedding because fabric is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture from the air and holds it. Cotton in a humidified room is carrying more water than the same cotton in a refrigerated one, all the time, without ever feeling wet to the touch.<\/p>\n

Add the water you put into it overnight, and a bed in a swamp-cooled bedroom stays damper than most people realize.<\/p>\n

What that actually causes<\/h2>\n

The musty smell.<\/strong> Mildew needs moisture, and it does not need standing water. A bed that never fully dries out between nights gives it enough. This is the single most common complaint from swamp cooler households and it is almost always this.<\/p>\n

Bedding that feels heavy or clammy.<\/strong> Not imagination. The fabric is genuinely carrying more water than it does in a dry room.<\/p>\n

Dust mites, which are otherwise a small problem here.<\/strong> Dust mites need relative humidity above roughly 50 percent to survive, and they pull moisture directly from the air rather than drinking. In refrigerated air in Phoenix, they struggle. In a swamp-cooled bedroom during a humid stretch, they do considerably better. If your allergies are worse at home than at work, this is worth considering.<\/p>\n

Laundry that never seems to finish drying.<\/strong> Air drying anything indoors in a swamp-cooled house takes far longer than it should, and things pulled out feeling almost dry stay almost dry.<\/p>\n

What to do about it<\/h2>\n

Air the bed out every morning.<\/strong> This is the highest-value habit and it takes no effort. Pull the covers all the way back, do not make the bed, and leave it for at least half an hour while you get ready. Overnight moisture needs somewhere to go, and a bed made at seven in the morning traps it under the comforter all day.<\/p>\n

Run a ceiling fan in the bedroom.<\/strong> Moving air across the bed helps it dry between nights, and it costs almost nothing.<\/p>\n

Open the windows.<\/strong> This is not optional with an evaporative cooler and a lot of people do not know it. The system needs air to exhaust or the humidity builds with nowhere to go. A cracked window on the far side of the house from the cooler is the standard setup, and it is the difference between a cooler that works and one that makes everything damp.<\/p>\n

Switch to lighter, faster-drying bedding.<\/strong> Percale rather than sateen, linen if you like it. Thinner layers dry between nights. A heavy comforter in a humidified room is the worst combination available.<\/p>\n

Never put bedding away even slightly damp.<\/strong> In a dry-air house you get away with it. Here you do not, and the linen closet is where it announces itself.<\/p>\n

Washing and drying in a swamp cooler house<\/h2>\n

Use the dryer fully rather than pulling things out early to finish on a rack. Indoor air drying works poorly in a humidified house, and it adds still more moisture to the room.<\/p>\n

Give heavy items substantially more dryer time than you would elsewhere, and check the middle of comforters and pillows by squeezing rather than by touching the surface.<\/p>\n

Half a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle is worth doing routinely rather than occasionally. It is mildly acidic, which is what breaks down the residue that holds musty odor, and it also handles the mineral buildup that hard water leaves behind.<\/p>\n

Skip fabric softener. The coating it leaves reduces breathability, which is precisely the wrong direction in a room that already has a moisture problem.<\/p>\n

The recurring problem in a swamp-cooled house is a comforter that never dries all the way through. A household dryer with a comforter packed into it cannot tumble the item, so the outside dries and the core does not, and the core is where the smell starts.<\/p>\n
