The sun goes down, the pavement keeps radiating, and the bedroom never really cools off. You wake up at three, flip the pillow, and it is warm on the other side too.

Bedding will not fix a climate. But the wrong bedding makes a hot night considerably worse, and a lot of people are sleeping under something chosen for a different part of the country.

Weave matters more than thread count

Thread count is the number most people shop on and the one that tells you the least. Above roughly 400 it is largely a marketing exercise, and manufacturers inflate it by counting plies in a twisted thread. A 1,000 thread count sheet is often a 250 thread count sheet with the math done generously.

What actually determines whether a sheet sleeps hot is the weave.

Percale is a simple one-over-one-under grid. It is the crisp, matte, hotel-feeling sheet. The structure leaves more space between threads, so air moves through it and moisture evaporates rather than sitting against you. For a Phoenix summer this is usually the right answer.

Sateen floats several threads over one, which is what gives it the silky sheen and the drape people like. It is also a denser surface with less airflow, and it traps warmth. Excellent in January, noticeably worse in July.

Linen is the other strong option. It looks rumpled by design, feels rougher for the first several washes, and then softens permanently. It moves moisture faster than cotton and dries faster once damp, which is the whole game on a night when you sweat.

Most bedding marketed as “cooling” is percale or linen with a better story attached. You can skip the story and buy the weave.

What to do about the comforter

A lot of Phoenix households run a full comforter year round because it is what the bed came with, then compensate by dropping the thermostat, which is an expensive way to solve a bedding problem.

The alternative is a duvet cover with nothing in it, or a lightweight cotton blanket, or a quilt. A duvet cover on its own is essentially a large flat sheet with a closed end, and in July that is frequently enough. The insert goes into storage until it is genuinely needed, which here is a narrow window.

If you share a bed with someone who runs cold, two separate lighter layers beats one heavy shared one. This is standard in a lot of the world and unaccountably rare here.

Washing when you sweat every night

The standard advice is weekly. In a Phoenix summer, if you are sweating through the night, every four or five days is closer to right, and that is not a hygiene technicality.

Sweat itself is mostly water and salt and does not smell. The odor comes from bacteria metabolizing it, along with the skin oil that came with it. Give that a week in fabric at bedroom temperature and you get the faintly sour smell that people mistake for a laundry problem when it is a frequency problem.

Wash in warm rather than cold when it is a heavy-sweat week. Cold water is fine for lightly worn clothes and it does not fully lift body oil, and oil left in cotton is what turns white sheets dingy over a year and what holds odor.

Skip fabric softener on sheets entirely. It works by depositing a waxy coating on the fibers, and that coating is water-repellent. On a sheet you want to wick moisture away from you, softener does exactly the wrong thing. It is the single most common reason a percale sheet stops feeling cool after a few months.

Run an extra rinse in summer. More sweat means more detergent used and more residue left behind, and detergent residue holds odor the same way oil does.

The pillow is the hottest thing on the bed

Your head puts out a lot of heat and a pillow surrounds it on three sides. Memory foam is the worst offender, because it is a closed structure that stores heat and gives it back to you.

Down, feather, and shredded fill all breathe better. So does a pillow with a percale or linen case rather than a jersey knit one, since jersey is essentially a t-shirt and holds warmth.

Swap pillowcases more often than the rest of the bed in summer. Twice a week is not excessive when you are sweating into it nightly, and it is the cheapest change on this list.

Where the machines come in

Summer bedding gets washed more often, which means the heavy items get washed more often too, and a comforter or a duvet insert is more than most household washers can rinse properly. Detergent stays in the middle of the fill, the fill clumps, and it never fully dries.

The machines at our self-service laundry on Camelback take a full king set including the comforter in one drum with room to tumble, and the higher extraction speed pulls out far more water before drying. In a summer where you are running bedding twice as often as usual, doing it in one trip rather than four evenings is the difference that matters.

Nosso wash-dry-fold service covers bedding if you would rather hand the whole thing over.

The short version

Percale or linen, not sateen, and ignore thread count. Lose the comforter insert for the summer. Wash every four or five days while you are sweating, in warm water, with an extra rinse and no fabric softener ever. Change pillowcases twice a week.

WaveMAX on Camelback is at 1615 W Camelback Rd, easy to reach from central Phoenix and the neighborhoods either side of the Camelback corridor.
