
People notice that a laundromat dryer finishes a load in a fraction of the time their dryer at home takes, and they usually assume it is simply bigger or hotter. Bigger is true. Hotter is only part of it, and it is the smallest part.
The real answer is four separate things, and three of them are fixable at home.
Drying is a moisture removal problem
A dryer does one job: it moves heat into wet fabric to evaporate water, and it moves that water vapor out of the drum. Both halves have to work.
Heat alone dries nothing. If the moist air cannot leave, the drum becomes a warm humid box and the clothes stay damp indefinitely while the machine runs and runs. That is exactly what a struggling home dryer is doing.
So the question is never only how hot. It is how much air moves through, how much water was in the load to begin with, and how the machine knows when to stop.
One: the load arrived much drier
This is the biggest factor and it is not the dryer at all.
A commercial washer spins at a much higher speed than a household machine, and extraction rises steeply with speed. A load that comes out of a high extraction spin is carrying substantially less water than the same load out of a typical home washer.
Less water in means less water to evaporate, and drying time falls in proportion. A great deal of what looks like dryer performance is actually washer performance.
At home, the version of this is simple: use the highest spin speed the fabric allows, and run a second spin cycle on towels and bedding. It costs a few minutes and saves considerably more in the dryer.
Two: the airflow is unrestricted
Commercial installations use short, straight, correctly sized ducting, and it is cleaned on a schedule. Home installations often have a long run with several elbows, and it gets cleaned when something goes wrong.
The effect is large. A restricted duct chokes the air exchange, so the moist air stays in the drum, so the machine runs longer and hotter to compensate, so the clothes take a beating and the run time doubles.
If your dryer needs two cycles for a load that used to take one, that is airflow, and it is the same signal as lint building up in a duct, which is a genuine fire risk rather than only an inconvenience.
Clear the duct once a year, clean the lint screen every load, and wash the lint screen itself with soap and water every few months, because softener residue coats the mesh and restricts airflow while the screen looks perfectly clean.
Three: the drum is larger and the tumble is better
Drying happens at the surface of the fabric that is exposed to moving hot air. A load that tumbles freely presents far more surface than a load that rotates as a packed lump.
Larger drums also let items separate. A comforter in a household drum wraps around itself, and the middle stays wet no matter how long it runs, which is why people run three cycles and still find a damp section.
The home fix is free: fill the drum to about half. An underfilled dryer is faster than a packed one, and people consistently guess wrong about this.
Four: the temperature is higher, and controlled
Commercial dryers do run hotter, on a heat source sized for the drum, and they hold temperature steadily rather than cycling as much.
Steady is the useful word. Evaporation happens at a rate set by the temperature the fabric actually experiences, so a machine that holds its heat outperforms one that swings, even at a similar peak.
What matters at home is using the moisture sensor setting rather than a timer. A timed cycle either stops early or keeps running after the load is dry, and everything after dry is abrasion producing lint and shrinkage with no benefit.
What this means for the loads that never quite dry
The loads that give home dryers trouble are the ones where all four factors compound: a king comforter, a pile of bath towels, a heavy blanket, anything down filled.
They hold the most water, they tumble the worst, and they need the most air exchange.
