Two Small Loads Against One Large One

The instinct with a full hamper is to push all of it into one machine and press start. Sometimes that is right. Just as often two small loads come out cleaner and are finished sooner, because the drying is what really decides how long the afternoon takes. What settles the question is whether the drum has room for water to move through the fabric.

What a drum actually has to do

Washing is not soaking. Water has to move through fabric, carry soil out of it, and then be replaced by clean water that carries the detergent away with it.

That movement needs space. A drum turning on its axis lifts fabric and drops it, and the drop is what pushes water through the weave.

Fill the drum past the point where the load can tumble and the lifting stops. The whole load turns as one solid mass, and the only mechanical action left is fabric rubbing on fabric.

That rubbing is abrasion without cleaning. It wears cotton, pills knitwear and leaves the soil roughly where it started.

The working guide is a hand’s width of free space above a dry, settled load, and a load you can still push down easily with one hand.

A front loader wants to be about three quarters full. A top loader with a centre agitator wants the clothes loosely packed and sitting below the top of the agitator.

Why an overfilled machine cannot rinse

Rinsing suffers first and it is the part nobody watches, because there is nothing to see.

A rinse works by dilution. Clean water goes in, mixes with what the fabric is holding, and is spun back out. Repeat that and the concentration falls each time.

A packed drum holds a great deal of fabric and still takes on a fixed amount of water, so the ratio of water to fabric drops and every rinse achieves less than it should.

Detergent left behind is what makes towels stiff and shirts feel faintly waxy. It also grips soil, so the next wearing gets dirty faster than it otherwise would.

The signs are consistent. Stiff towels that no longer absorb, dark clothes with a chalky cast, and a residue smell that comes up when clothes get warm.

Two small loads rinse properly for the simple reason that each one has a sensible amount of water for the amount of fabric in it.

Two small loads usually finish sooner than one crammed one

This is the part that surprises people, and it is about the dryer rather than the washer.

An overfilled washer cannot spin properly. The load sits unbalanced, the machine detects it, and it drops the spin speed to protect itself.

A slower spin leaves far more water in the fabric, and that water then has to come out in the dryer. A dryer removes water very slowly compared with a spin.

So the single crammed wash produces a load that needs an extremely long dry, often two full cycles, which is where the supposed time saving goes.

Two small loads spin properly, come out lighter, and dry in one cycle each. The second wash runs while the first load is already in the dryer, so the two overlap.

The arithmetic usually lands in favour of splitting by a comfortable margin, and the clothes are in better condition at the end of it.

Telling a full load from an overfull one

Load the drum dry and press down on it. If it springs back and there is room above it, that is full. If it does not move, that is overfull.

Watch the first minute of the cycle through the door if you can. Clothes should be tumbling and visibly changing position, not rotating as one lump.

For towels and bedding, weight is a better guide than volume, because they compress and look smaller than they are.

A single duvet fills most of a large drum on its own and should not be sharing with anything except possibly its own cover.

If the machine walks, thumps, or keeps pausing to redistribute, the load is either too big or unevenly packed.

If items come out with dry patches or streaks of undissolved detergent, the drum was too full for the water to reach everything in it. When that happens regularly, two small loads is the fix rather than a different detergent.

When one large machine is the better answer

There are real cases where splitting is the wrong move, and it helps to know them.

Bulky single items come first. A comforter, a duvet, a sleeping bag or a mattress protector has to move freely in a large volume of water, and only a big drum provides that. Splitting is not available and a small machine cannot do it at all.

Then loads that should not be divided. A full set of sheets washed together stays matched in colour over years, and dark denim keeps its shade better washed as one batch than as pieces.

Heavily soiled items need water volume more than they need gentleness. Work clothes carrying real dirt want enough water to carry it out rather than move it around.

And anything where two small loads would each be tiny. A quarter full drum uses nearly the same water as a properly filled one, tumbles badly because there is not enough weight for the load to fall, and wastes a cycle.

So the real choice is not between big and small. It is between a properly loaded machine and a badly loaded one, at whatever size.

Splitting by what things need, not down the middle

Cutting the pile in half is not the point. Dividing it by what the items need is.

Heavy with heavy. Towels, jeans, canvas and heavy cotton in one load, since they all want the same wash and the same long dry.

Light with light. Shirts, thin cotton, synthetics and anything that dries quickly in the other, since they need much less heat and are damaged by more.

Keep anything genuinely dirty out of both. Whatever it releases into the water ends up on everything sharing the drum with it.

Two small loads divided this way finish at two different times, which is exactly the benefit. The light one is folded while the heavy one is still going.

If there are three natural groups, run three. The aim is matching, not a fixed number.

Habits that make the difference

Shake items out as they go in rather than dropping them in clumps. A balled up towel stays balled up for the whole cycle.

Load in layers, mixing large and small items, so the load balances itself when the spin starts.

Measure detergent for the load you actually have rather than for the machine’s maximum, which is what the cap is designed around.

Do not open the door and add one last thing after the water has gone in.

Move the wash into a dryer promptly. A load left sitting wet in a warm room develops a smell you then have to wash out again.

Clear the lint filter between loads. A partly blocked filter is the other common reason a dry takes twice as long as it should.

The Plano part

Hard water is the first reason overloading costs more here than it would somewhere else. North Texas supply carries a lot of dissolved mineral, mineral competes with detergent, and people compensate by pouring in extra. Extra detergent inside a packed drum is a rinsing problem multiplied by itself. Two right sized loads at a normal dose rinse better than one crammed load at a heavy dose, reliably.

The long humid summer is the second factor. Air drying does not finish the job outdoors for much of the year in this area, so nearly everything goes through a dryer, and dryer time is the true cost of a badly spun wash. A load that leaves an overfilled washer holding extra water can take two full cycles in August, which is where the whole time saving of the one big load disappears.

Storm season produces the loads that break the rule. A spring storm arrives with soaked towels, wet outdoor clothing, muddy items from the yard and sometimes bedding, all at once and all extremely heavy with water. Those are genuine big machine loads, and chopping them into small ones only creates a long queue of very wet washing.

For the rest of the year the pattern here favours dividing. A long warm season means light clothing changed often, and light clothing dries fast provided it is not sharing a drum with bath sheets. Keeping heavy cotton in its own load is the single change that shortens most laundry afternoons around here, and two small loads divided that way finish at two different times rather than one late one.

Where load size stops being the constraint

Two small loads only help if there is a machine that properly fits each of them, and a big item still needs a big drum.
