Load Size Decides Whether a Wash Works

Load size is the setting people guess at and the one that quietly decides whether a wash works. Too full and nothing gets clean. Too empty and you have wasted water on a handful of shirts and worn them out faster than necessary.

How a washing machine actually cleans

Three things do the work: chemistry, meaning detergent, temperature, and mechanical action.

Mechanical action is clothes moving through water and rubbing against each other. That rubbing is what lifts soil out of the weave.

Both failure modes are failures of mechanical action. An overloaded drum has no room for anything to move, so it rotates as one solid mass with the middle barely wetted. An underloaded drum has nothing for the clothes to rub against, so they tumble freely and get very little friction.

There is a right amount, and it is more specific than most people think.

The rule

Fill the drum about three quarters full, loosely, before adding water.

The check: place a flat hand on top of the load. Your hand should slide down the side of the drum to the bottom without forcing.

Another version: the drum should look about three quarters full of loosely placed clothes, not compressed. If you have pushed anything in, it is too full.

Clothes expand when wet, so a drum that looks comfortably full dry is over-full wet.

Front loaders and top loaders differ

A front loader tumbles clothes up and drops them through a small pool of water. It needs air space above the load for that drop to happen, so three quarters is close to the maximum and it is unforgiving about crowding.

A top loader with a central agitator needs clothes distributed evenly around the agitator, not packed against one side. Load loosely around the post rather than dropping everything in one place.

A high efficiency top loader without an agitator uses a plate at the bottom and relies on the load rubbing against itself, so it is closer to a front loader in behaviour and equally sensitive to overloading.

Water level settings

If your machine lets you choose, match the water to the load rather than picking large by default.

Too little water and detergent stays concentrated and does not rinse out, which is a common cause of residue and stiff fabric.

Too much water and clothes float rather than rubbing against each other, which reduces the mechanical action.

Most modern machines sense the load automatically, and where they do the important variable is simply not overloading them, because the sensor cannot create room that is not there.

Bulky items are the exception worth overriding for. A comforter or a pillow needs extra water, because the fill absorbs a great deal and the item will otherwise be washed dry in the middle.

Sorting by weight as well as colour

Mixed weights are a load-size problem in disguise.

Towels and jeans absorb far more water than shirts, so a mixed load ends up unbalanced, and the heavy items sit at the bottom while the light ones ride on top with little contact.

Heavy with heavy, light with light. The wash is better and so is the drying, since the two dry at completely different rates.

Bulky items

One at a time, and only if it genuinely fits.

A comforter that fills the drum is not being washed. It needs room to move through the water, which usually means a machine considerably larger than a domestic one.

The test is whether you can push it down and see it spring back with space around it. If it is wedged, it will come out with detergent in the middle and soil still in it.

What overloading costs beyond cleanliness

Clothes come out creased, because they were compressed rather than tumbling.

Detergent does not rinse out, which leaves residue that holds odour.

The machine works harder. An unbalanced, overloaded drum strains the bearings and the suspension, and that is a repair rather than an annoyance.

And the load takes far longer to dry, since the spin cannot extract water evenly from a compacted mass.

The Plano part

Hard water makes correct loading matter more here than it would elsewhere.

Minerals in North Texas water bind with detergent, so less of it is available to clean. That means the mechanical action is carrying more of the load than it would in a soft water region, and mechanical action is precisely what overloading destroys. An overloaded drum in hard water is doubly handicapped.

The practical adjustment is a slightly smaller load than you think you need, plus half a cup of washing soda to free the detergent up.

Summer is the other factor. Heat means more sweat, which means more body oil, and body oil needs both warm water and genuine friction to shift. Loads that would be fine in winter come out disappointing in August for exactly this reason, and the fix is a smaller load rather than more detergent.

When the load is bigger than the machine

The honest answer for bedding, comforters, and a week of a family’s towels is that a domestic drum is not large enough for them to move, which is why those loads come out unsatisfying no matter what settings you use.

The short version

Clothes clean by rubbing against each other, so both overloading and underloading fail for the same reason. Fill the drum about three quarters full loosely, and check by sliding a flat hand down the side to the bottom without forcing. Clothes expand when wet, so a drum that looks full dry is over-full wet. Sort by weight as well as colour, since towels and shirts hold very different amounts of water. Wash bulky items one at a time and only if they have room to move. And in hard water, run slightly smaller loads, because friction is doing more of the work.
