Most people iron for far longer than they need to because they are fighting the fabric rather than working with it. What actually removes a crease is not heat on its own. It is heat, moisture and pressure arriving together, and once you know which of the three you are missing, the whole job gets shorter.

Heat, moisture and pressure, and what removes a crease
A crease is not a mark on cloth. It is a shape the fibres have taken and then held.
Cotton and linen fibres hold their shape through hydrogen bonds between long chains of cellulose. Fold the cloth and those bonds reform in the folded position, which is why a shirt left in a basket comes out with the basket’s shape in it.
Water breaks those bonds. Heat gives the fibres enough energy to move. Pressure decides what shape they are in when they settle again.
Take away any one of the three and you are working much harder, because what removes a crease is the combination rather than any one part of it. A dry iron on dry cotton mostly polishes the fold. Steam with no pressure relaxes cloth but leaves it soft rather than flat.
This also explains why a fold comes straight back. If the cloth is still damp when you hang it, the fibres are still free to move and gravity gets a vote.
So the last step of pressing anything is letting it cool and dry flat or on a hanger before it is worn or folded.
Why steam relaxes fibres and dry heat sets them
Steam is water delivered as heat, which is why it does two of the three jobs at the same time and why it removes a crease faster than a dry plate does.
It penetrates faster than a spray bottle because vapour moves into the fibre rather than sitting on the surface of it.
Dry heat with no moisture does the opposite of what people expect. It drives out whatever water is left and locks the fibres into the shape they are currently in.
That is useful when you want a fold to stay, which is the whole basis of a pressed trouser line.
It is a problem when you have not flattened the cloth first, because dry heat on a wrinkled shirt sets the wrinkle harder than it was before.
With synthetics the risk is greater still, since heat past a certain point does not set the fibre, it deforms it permanently and leaves a shine that never comes out.
Ironing temperature by fabric
The dots on an iron dial are a real scale rather than decoration. One dot is roughly a hundred and ten degrees Celsius, two is about a hundred and fifty, three is about two hundred.
Linen and cotton take the top setting and want steam with it. Nothing removes a crease from linen at a low setting, and underheating is why people press the same sleeve four times.
Wool sits in the middle and should be pressed through a damp cloth rather than touched directly, since direct contact flattens the surface and leaves shine.
Silk goes on low, dry, and on the reverse side. Water spots silk, so steam is a risk rather than a help.
Polyester, nylon, acetate and most blends belong on the lowest setting. They soften long before cotton does.
Anything with a print, a transfer or elastane in it goes inside out and low. The plate should never touch a printed surface.
Start with the coolest items and work upward as the iron heats, because it takes far longer to cool an iron down than to warm it up.
When a steamer beats an iron
A steamer works by relaxing fibres with vapour and letting the weight of the garment do the flattening.
That makes it the better tool for anything you cannot lay flat: a hanging dress, a lined jacket, a pleated skirt, curtains still on the pole.
It is better for wool and knitwear, where the pressure of an iron is the thing causing the damage.
It handles delicate and embellished pieces, since nothing hard ever touches the surface.
It is the wrong tool for a collar, a cuff or a trouser line. Vapour alone never removes a crease from a folded edge, because there is no pressure behind it.
In practice most households want both, and the iron does much less work if a steamer has already relaxed the cloth.
Keep the garment slightly taut with your free hand while you steam, since that tension is doing the job a board would otherwise do.
Hanging something in a bathroom
This works, within limits, and it is useful to know where those limits sit.
Hang the garment on the back of the door, well away from the shower spray, and run the shower hot with the door closed for ten minutes.
It adds moisture to the fibres and lets gravity pull light folds out, which removes a crease from a hanging sleeve but never produces a flat collar or a sharp edge.
It works best on light synthetics and thin cotton and worst on heavy cotton, linen and anything with sewn structure in it.
Give it time afterwards. The garment needs to hang and dry in still air, and taking it out damp and putting it on undoes the whole thing.
Smoothing seams and edges with your hands while it is damp is the nearest thing to pressure available, and it makes a noticeable difference.
Technique that costs nothing
Work in the direction of the grain rather than in circles, since circular motion stretches the weave out of shape.
Take a shirt in a fixed order: collar, cuffs, sleeves, yoke, then the body. Finishing with the largest area means you do not crush what you have already done.
Do collars from the points inward. Starting in the middle pushes cloth towards the point and creates a small fold you then have to chase.
Damp is better than dry. A hot plate on bone dry cotton rarely removes a crease, so mist it and wait a minute for the water to soak in rather than pressing it wet on the surface.
Hang each piece immediately and leave it to cool. Cloth put straight onto a pile or into a wardrobe while warm takes the shape of whatever it lands on.
Keep the plate clean. Scorch and starch residue transfers straight onto the next pale thing you press.
The last few minutes of a dryer cycle
Most of the pressing people do is created in the dryer, and the cheapest thing that removes a crease is taking a load out at the right moment.
Folds set when cloth is hot and dry and sitting still. A load that finishes and then sits in a warm drum is being pressed into whatever shape it landed in.
Take clothes out while they still feel very slightly cool and damp at the seams, and shake them out at once.
Hang shirts on hangers straight from the drum, pull the shoulders and seams square with your fingers, and let them finish drying there.
Overloading is the other half of it. A drum too full cannot tumble, so garments stay folded against each other for the whole cycle.
Lower heat over a longer cycle produces far fewer folds than high heat over a short one, for exactly the same amount of drying.
Do this properly and most shirts need a touch on the collar and cuffs rather than a full press, which is ten minutes saved on every shirt.
The Oak Lawn part
Winter in the Chicago area does something specific to pressing, and it is the indoor air rather than the weather outside. Heated houses run very dry through the cold months, and dry cloth is the hardest kind to press, because nothing removes a crease without moisture in the fibre for the iron to act on. Mist cotton and linen and give the water a minute to soak in before the plate goes near it.
That same dry indoor air is why static and cling get worse from December onward, and why clothes come out of a dryer looking more rumpled than they did in July. Pulling loads out slightly damp is more useful in the cold months than at any other time of year.
Road salt is a separate problem that lands on the same garments. Salt splashed onto hems and coat cuffs dries as a pale tide line, and pressing over it sets the mark and can leave a shine on dark wool. Sponge the salt out with cool water first, let the area dry, and press afterwards.
Summers here run humid, and that flips the situation completely. Cloth holds more moisture from the air, which makes it easier to press but far slower to set, so give everything longer on the hanger before it goes into a wardrobe. A shirt put away warm and slightly damp in August comes out with a fold across the chest.
Where a shirt comes out of the dryer flat
Most of the pressing you avoid is decided by how a load was dried rather than by what you do with an iron afterwards.
