A dryer that runs a full cycle and hands back clothes that are still damp is usually not broken. Something between the washer’s spin and the vent outside is limiting how much moisture can actually leave, and it is nearly always one of five things. Working through them in order takes less time than simply running the whole cycle again.

What a dryer is actually doing
A dryer does three jobs at once, and clothes come out still damp when any one of the three is being held back.
It heats air, which lets that air hold more moisture than it could cold.
It tumbles, which keeps exposing wet surfaces to the heated air.
It moves the air out of the drum, carrying the moisture away and drawing fresh dry air in behind it.
Heat without airflow gives you a hot wet load. Airflow without proper tumbling dries the outside of a ball of towels and nothing in the middle of it.
Every fault below is one of those three failing, which is why identifying which one saves so much time.
Overloading, which is the usual answer
A drum filled past about two thirds cannot tumble the way it needs to.
Wet fabric is heavy and it clumps. A packed drum slides around as a single mass instead of lifting items and dropping them.
Air then takes the easy path around the outside of that mass, and the centre never meets it.
The pattern gives it away. If the outer layer is dry and the middle is still damp, the drum was too full.
Splitting one packed dryer into two half loads usually finishes sooner than the single load would have and spends less energy doing it.
Bulky items are the worst offenders here. A comforter or a pair of bath sheets fills a drum on its own without looking like much.
The lint screen
Clean it before every load rather than when it starts to look bad.
A screen a third covered has already cut airflow measurably, and lint is a mat that catches more lint.
Softener and dryer sheets leave an invisible film on the mesh that blocks air even when the screen looks clear. Run water onto it. If the water beads and sits rather than passing straight through, wash the screen with warm water and a soft brush.
Check the slot the screen sits in as well. Lint falls off the mesh and gathers down there where nobody looks.
A blocked screen shows up as a load that is hot to the touch and still damp, because heat is going in and moisture is not coming out.
Venting, which is the part people never check
Every dryer has to push moist air somewhere, and the route it takes decides how fast a load finishes.
Long duct runs, sharp bends and crushed flexible hose all add resistance. A single tight bend costs more than a metre of straight duct.
Lint builds up inside that duct over months and narrows it, and a narrowed duct is a slow dryer no matter how good the machine is.
The outside flap has to open. Watch it while the dryer runs. If it barely lifts, or if it is packed with lint or blocked by a nest, the air has nowhere to go.
The tell for a venting fault is clothes that stay still damp while the room itself feels warm and heavy, because the moisture is coming back out into the room.
Ribbed flexible plastic duct is the worst option sold and rigid metal is the best, since ribs catch lint and plastic sags into low spots.
Mixed fabric weights in one load
Cotton holds far more water than polyester does, because the cotton fibre absorbs water into itself while a synthetic mostly carries it on the surface.
Put one bath towel in with a load of t-shirts and the shirts are finished in twenty minutes while the towel needs an hour.
The machine has no way of knowing that. It runs until its sensor or its timer says stop, so either the shirts take forty minutes of heat they never needed or the towel comes out still damp.
Moisture sensors read whatever touches them. A load with a wide spread of drying times gives the sensor a confused signal, and it generally stops early.
Sort by weight rather than by colour when you are filling a dryer. Towels together, jeans and heavy cotton together, light synthetics together.
The side benefit is less heat damage, since the light items come out before the heavy ones have finished.
Spin speed at the washer decides dryer time
Most of the water in a wash should never reach the dryer at all.
A high spin can leave cotton at roughly half the residual moisture a low spin leaves in it. That difference is dryer time, directly and predictably.
A delicate or gentle cycle drops the spin sharply. That is the right choice for the garment and it is the reason those loads come back still damp after a normal drying cycle.
If a load felt heavy coming out of the washer, you have found the problem, and the fix belongs at the washer rather than the dryer.
Running the washer’s spin a second time on a load that came out sodden costs a few minutes and saves considerably more later.
An unbalanced drum stops a washer reaching full speed at all. One heavy item washed on its own is the usual cause of that.
Why running a second full cycle on a still damp load is the wrong fix
The instinct with clothes that are still damp is to run the entire cycle again, and of all the options that wastes the most time.
The load is mostly dry by then, so most of the cycle is heating fabric that no longer needs heating. Heat with nothing left to evaporate is what shrinks cotton and hardens elastic.
It also does nothing whatsoever about the cause. If the drum was too full, it is still too full on the second run.
Better sequence: pull out everything that is already dry, clean the lint screen, and give the remainder fifteen or twenty minutes.
If the whole load is evenly damp rather than damp in patches, stop and check the screen and the vent before spending another cycle on it.
One heavy item that refuses to finish is better hung up to air dry than given another hour of tumbling it will not use well.
The Oak Lawn part
Hard water is the local factor with the largest effect on drying time, and hardly anybody connects the two. Mineral deposit builds up inside towel loops and heavy cotton, stiffening the fibre and letting it hold on to more water, so towels here genuinely take longer than the same towels would in a soft supply area. An occasional wash with washing soda and no detergent strips that build up and shortens the cycles afterwards.
Humid summers cut the other way and cost you directly. Air already carrying a lot of moisture cannot pick up much more, so a dryer that copes easily in January will hand back clothes that are still damp on a July afternoon at the same setting.
Cold months bring the opposite trap. A dryer in a closed up basement in this climate is often venting through a long duct to reach an outside wall, and long ducts with several bends are one of the most common reasons a cycle runs slow without anybody suspecting the machine is fine.
Seasonal clothing weight matters too. Fleece, thick denim, flannel and lined outerwear all carry more water than a July load, so a drum that was a sensible fill in summer is genuinely overloaded in January at the same visual level.
The combination to watch for is a humid stretch plus a heavy load plus a screen nobody cleaned. Any one of those alone is survivable and all three together produce a cycle that achieves almost nothing.
Where the spin does most of the work
Most of a drying problem has already been decided before the load ever reaches a dryer.
