A comforter that was even last winter comes out of storage with the comforter filling bunched at one end and the other end flat enough to see light through. It is the most common complaint about bedding and it is usually fixable. Why it happened tells you whether this one can be saved or whether it needs a needle.

Why comforter filling migrates in the first place
Fill moves because nothing holds it in place except the compartments sewn into the shell, and those compartments are larger than people assume.
Inside a baffled comforter each chamber can be eight or ten inches square. Fill has plenty of room to travel within its own box long before it ever crosses a seam.
Water and tumbling speed that up. Wet fill is heavy, it clumps, and heavy clumps slide to the low side of a spinning drum and stay where they land.
Compression does the rest. Weight applied over months pushes fill outward from the middle of each chamber toward the edges, which is why a comforter stored under other bedding comes out worse than one stored flat.
And once a line of internal stitching lets go, fill crosses from one chamber into the next and nothing sends it back.
Sewn-through versus baffle box
Two constructions, two different failures.
Sewn-through means the top shell and the bottom shell are stitched directly to each other in a grid or in long channels. It is cheaper, it is lighter, and comforter filling cannot cross a seam while that seam holds.
Its weakness is the seam line itself. At every stitch there is almost no loft, so there is a thin cold line across the whole grid, and fill packs against those seams over time and leaves the centre of each square shallow.
A baffle box has strips of fabric sewn between the two shells, forming boxes with vertical walls. Fill sits at full loft right across the box including at the edges, which is why baffled comforters feel deeper.
Its weakness is that the baffle walls are thin fabric under constant tension. When one lets go, two boxes become one large chamber and the fill drifts into whichever half sits lower.
Pinch the comforter along a seam to tell which you have. If the two shells meet with no fill between them, it is sewn-through. If there is a soft gap between the shells at the seam, there is a baffle in there.
Down, feather, and polyester
Down migrates more readily than polyester, and it also recovers more readily.
Down clusters are small, light, and slick, so they move through a chamber under very little force. Under compression they collapse to a fraction of their volume, then spring back when the pressure comes off.
That springiness is what makes down worth redistributing. Shake it out and it goes back to filling the space it is given.
Polyester fill is either loose fibre or bonded batting. Loose fibre migrates and clumps much like down, but without the recovery, so the clumps stay clumps.
Bonded or sheeted batting barely migrates at all, because it is one continuous layer rather than loose material. When it fails it tears, leaving a permanently thin patch rather than a shifted one.
The honest ranking is loose polyester worst, down in the middle, and bonded batting best at holding position and worst to repair.
The drum size problem
The most common single cause of comforter filling ending up in one corner is washing the comforter in a machine that is too small for it.
A comforter needs room to open. In a drum that only just holds it, the comforter folds once and stays folded for the whole cycle, and every rotation drives wet fill toward that fold.
It never unfolds, because there is no space for it to open into. The wash does very little for cleaning and a great deal of harm to the distribution.
The spin finishes the job. Force at speed presses the wet fill hard against the outside of whatever shape the comforter happens to be in, and it then dries in that shape.
The rule is simple. The comforter should move freely with the drum no more than half to two thirds full when it goes in dry. If you have to press it in, it is the wrong machine.
A large front loading drum is the right tool. A top loader with a centre agitator is the wrong one for any comforter, because the agitator drags the shell against a fixed post for the whole cycle.
Redistributing comforter filling that has already shifted
Work while it is damp, not dry and not soaking. Damp fill is soft and separates under your fingers. Dry fill is packed and does not.
Lay it flat on a bed or a clean floor and find the clumps by hand. Break each one apart through the shell, working from the dense end toward the empty end.
Push the fill along the inside of the chamber rather than trying to pull it. Fingers on both sides of the shell, walking it forward a few inches at a time.
The shake and snap method works well on down. Take two adjacent corners, lift, and snap the comforter sharply downward so air rushes through the chambers. Repeat from each pair of corners, ten or twelve times, and it moves a surprising amount.
Then finish in the dryer on low with three or four dryer balls or a couple of clean tennis balls. The balls beat the clumps apart as it tumbles while the low heat lets the fill open.
Give it far longer than seems reasonable. A comforter that feels dry on the outside can still be damp in the core, and damp fill settles right back into clumps overnight.
How to tell if the baffles are broken
Hold the comforter up against a window or a bright light. Even fill reads as an even glow, and a failed baffle shows as a bright empty strip next to a dark dense one.
Run your hand along each seam line. An intact baffle gives a defined edge you can feel through the shell. Where a wall has torn, the seam feels vague and fill crosses under your hand freely.
Push fill deliberately from one box into its neighbour. If it goes, the wall between them is gone.
A broken baffle in the middle of a comforter is a construction failure rather than a washing one. No amount of shaking or drying fixes it, because the fill will always run back to the low side.
The repair means opening the outer seam, restoring the fill by hand, and closing it again, which is a sewing job.
If the outer shell seam itself has split and fill is escaping, stop washing it until it is stitched. One cycle with an open seam empties fill into the machine.
Keeping comforter filling where it belongs
Use a duvet cover with corner ties and actually tie them. Most fill migration in daily use is really the comforter sliding around inside a loose cover and bunching.
Shake it out every time you make the bed. Thirty seconds of snapping it flat each morning prevents most of what people spend an afternoon fixing later.
Rotate it end for end every few months so the same end is not always at the foot of the bed taking the weight.
Dry it completely every single time. Damp fill is the largest cause of clumping that turns permanent.
Store it flat with nothing on top, or loosely rolled. Not compressed, not folded hard, and not at the bottom of a stack.
Vacuum bags are the worst option for anything with loose fill. Months at full compression crushes down clusters and mats polyester fibre, and some of that does not come back.
The Mission part
Two local factors work against comforter filling here, and they sit at opposite ends of the same year.
Deep South Texas is hot and humid for most of it, and humidity is why a comforter that feels dry after an hour in a dryer often is not. Moisture in the air slows the last stage of drying, the core stays damp, and damp fill settles into clumps within a day. Give bedding a longer low heat dry than you would in a dry climate, and check the middle by feel rather than trusting the surface.
The cooling season is short, so heavy bedding here spends most of the year put away. Long storage is exactly the condition that lets fill settle and mat. A comforter compressed in a bag from March to December comes out with the fill flattened and pushed to the edges, and that is a storage failure rather than a washing one. Store it flat or loosely rolled with air around it.
Hard water is the third factor and it affects the shell more than the fill. Mineral deposit builds in the shell fabric and makes it stiffer and less slippery, which changes how the fill moves inside and makes a comforter feel heavier and flatter than it really is. Less detergent and an extra rinse keeps the shell soft.
Where a comforter gets room to move
Fill stays where it belongs when the comforter can open fully in the drum, which is a matter of size rather than technique.
