Why the Same Load Takes Longer in Some Dryers

A load that finishes in forty minutes in one machine can still be damp after an hour and a quarter in another, with the same clothes and the same weather outside. The difference is rarely the heating element. Most of the reason the same load takes longer in some dryers is settled before the dryer starts, and the rest is airflow.

It starts at the washer

A dryer removes water with heat and air. A washer removes it with force, and force is far quicker.

Final spin speed decides how much water is still in the fabric when the load leaves the washer, and the range between machines is wide.

A low spin can leave cotton carrying close to its own weight in water. A high spin can bring that down to a third of it or less.

That difference on its own can double a drying time, and it is the first reason the same load takes longer in some dryers than in others.

It is also why a delicate load takes so long to dry. The low spin is part of the protection, and a soaking load is the price of it.

If the washer offers a second spin, two extra minutes there saves a great deal more than two minutes of drying.

Drum size and the air that moves through it

Drying is evaporation, and evaporation needs air that is warm, moving, and not already loaded with water.

A larger drum holds more air around the clothes, so the air touching the fabric gets replaced more often and carries more water away on each pass.

Airflow rate matters as much as drum volume. A machine that pushes a lot of air through a moderate drum beats one that pushes very little through a large one.

Commercial machines are usually built around airflow first, which is the main reason a load that ran over an hour at home finishes much faster in one.

Heat alone does not make up for it. Hotter air with nowhere to go simply becomes hot wet air, and hot wet air dries nothing.

That is also why a dryer in a small closed room slows down. It is breathing the air it just used.

A lint screen that looks clean

The lint screen is the most common single cause of a long cycle, and it is the least suspected because it usually looks fine.

Lint you can see is easy. The problem is the invisible film that builds on the mesh from fabric softener and dryer sheets.

That film blocks airflow while leaving the screen looking clear, and the cycle simply stretches to compensate.

The test is straightforward. Run water onto the screen. It should fall straight through. If it beads or pools, the mesh is blinded and needs washing with warm water and a soft brush.

Clear the visible lint every load rather than every few loads, since a screen half covered restricts air from the first minute of the cycle.

Lint that gets past the screen collects further along the airway, and that is the version you cannot see or reach.

Venting and where the water goes

Every bit of water that leaves the clothes has to leave the machine, and in a vented dryer it leaves as hot damp air through a duct.

A long duct, a crushed duct or one with several bends slows that air down, and slow air means moisture coming back into the drum.

Flexible plastic or foil ducting is the usual culprit, since it collapses behind a machine and catches lint on every ridge.

A blocked or partly blocked vent shows itself as a load that is hot to the touch and still damp, which is the clearest symptom there is.

Condensing and heat pump machines have no duct and use a condenser and a water tank instead. The equivalent failure is a clogged condenser filter or a full tank.

Heat pump dryers also run at a much lower temperature by design, so they take longer on purpose and are gentler on fabric for the same reason.

Load size against drum volume

Clothes dry by tumbling through moving air, and a load only tumbles if there is room for it to fall.

A drum filled past about two thirds rolls the load round as a mass rather than separating it, so the middle of that mass never meets hot air at all.

The result is a cycle that ends with dry edges and a wet core, and a second cycle run for the sake of four items in the centre.

Underfilling has its own fault. A very small load in a large drum can wrap itself into a rope and dry unevenly, and sheets are the worst offenders for that.

Half to two thirds full is where a dryer works properly, and that is usually less than people put in. Loading is why the same load takes longer in some dryers even when the two machines are identical.

Two properly loaded cycles finish sooner and more evenly than one packed cycle, which is not intuitive and is easy to test.

Mixing fabric weights in one load

This is the most common self inflicted cause and it costs more time than any of the mechanical ones.

Synthetics hold very little water and dry quickly. Cotton holds a great deal and dries slowly. Towels, denim and heavy cotton are slower again.

Put them in one drum and the cycle runs until the slowest item is dry, which means the synthetics spend the last half hour being cooked for no purpose.

That extra heat is where shrinkage, pilling and cracked prints come from, and none of it is achieving anything.

So sort by weight for the dryer even where you did not sort that way for the wash. Towels together, shirts together, heavy trousers together.

One hooded sweatshirt in a load of shirts will hold the whole cycle open for twenty extra minutes, and the hood and the waistband will still be damp at the end of it.

Pull the fast items out partway and let the slow ones carry on. One interruption saves the rest of the load from overdrying.

Why the same load takes longer in some dryers

Put the variables side by side and the spread stops being mysterious.

Two loads can leave two washers holding very different amounts of water, and that alone moves the drying time by a wide margin.

One drum may be moving twice the air of another, and moving air is what carries the water out of the machine.

One screen may be clear and one filmed over. One duct may be short and straight while the other is long and crushed behind a wall.

One drum may be two thirds full and the other packed to the door.

And one load may be all cotton while the other is a mixture that finishes at the pace of its heaviest item.

Machines do differ, and the machine is usually the smaller part of it. The part you control is spin speed, load size, a clean screen and sorting by weight.

The Mesa part

Local conditions here help the drying and hurt it in one specific way that shows up as long cycles.

Dry desert air is the advantage. Air holding very little moisture has a lot of capacity to take up more, so a machine here works with the incoming air rather than against it, and air drying outdoors is genuinely fast for much of the year.

That makes a strong case for pulling a load out slightly damp and finishing it on a hanger or a rail, which removes the part of the cycle that does the most damage for the least benefit.

Hard water is the factor that lengthens cycles. Mineral deposit builds up inside fabric, and mineralised cotton holds more water and feels stiff, so towels here take longer than the same towels somewhere with soft water. Cutting the detergent dose, adding a rinse, and using vinegar in the rinse on towels all shorten drying time as a side effect.

Dust is the third factor and it works on the machine rather than the clothes. Fine airborne dust settles into screens, vents and the airway, so a dryer in a dusty environment loses airflow sooner than one elsewhere. Screens want clearing every load and ducts want checking more often than a manual suggests.

Summer heat matters too, because the room around the machine is already hot and a dryer in a hot enclosed space struggles to shed heat. Anything that gets fresh air to the machine shortens the cycle.

Where the air actually moves

The same load takes longer in some dryers because of water left in the fabric and air moving through the drum, and both of those scale with the machine.
