Mat room laundry is two completely different fabrics washed on the same evening. A heavy cotton gi that holds three times its own weight in water, and a polyester rash guard that feels dry in ten minutes and still smells in a week. Treating both the same way is how schools wreck one and fail to clean the other.

What actually comes out of the bag
Mat room laundry comes out of a training bag, and the bag holds a short and predictable list. Each item on it fails in its own way.
The gi or kimono, which is the heaviest cotton garment most people own. Rash guards and compression tops, which are knitted synthetics. Shorts, which are usually a coated or woven polyester.
Then the belt, which is its own argument, and a stack of mat towels, which do more work than anything else in the building.
Nothing in a mat room laundry basket belongs in a mixed household load. The weights are wrong, the temperatures are wrong, and the dyes are wrong.
Sorting by fabric rather than by owner is the first decision, and it is the one that prevents most of what follows.
Heavy cotton weave against polyester knit
A gi is woven cotton drill in the four hundred to five hundred gram range, sometimes heavier in a double weave. It is built as armour, which means dense yarn and very little open space in the weave.
Dense weave means the water has to travel a long way in and an equally long way out. A gi jacket that weighs three pounds dry can come out of a wash holding closer to nine.
Cotton in that weight also keeps shrinking. Even a preshrunk gi has more to give, and unbleached cotton has a great deal more.
A rash guard is the opposite animal. Polyester filament knitted with a small percentage of elastane, smooth, non absorbent, and almost dry when it comes out of the spin.
The catch is that polyester is oil loving. Body oil binds to the filament and stays there through a cold wash, which is why a rash guard that looks clean can still smell after it warms up.
So mat room laundry is two fabrics with opposite problems. The cotton needs gentle temperature and long airflow. The polyester needs enough warmth and enough rinse to release oil.
Why a gi takes so long to dry and what slow drying costs
The collar is the reason. A gi collar is a thick rolled core of cotton or foam, several layers deep, and it holds water long after the rest of the jacket feels finished.
The skirt of the jacket and the double stitched seams are the same story at a smaller scale. The jacket dries from the outside in and the core is last.
A gi that dries slowly in still air develops a sour note, and that note is not sitting on the surface. It moves into the weave and comes back every time the jacket gets damp again.
Airflow beats heat for this. A fan pointed at a hanging gi does more than a warm still room, and it does it without touching the cotton.
Hang it properly. Unbutton or untie the jacket, spread the lapels wide over the broadest hanger available, and turn it inside out so the collar faces the moving air.
Hang the trousers by the cuffs rather than the waist so the heavy waistband is at the top and water can run down and out.
Give it longer than it looks like it needs, and check the collar with a hand before it goes back in a bag.
Why a gi never goes in a hot dryer
This is the rule that destroys more gis than anything else in a mat room laundry, and it is broken for an understandable reason. People are trying to dry the collar.
Heavy cotton shrinks hard and unevenly in high heat. Sleeves and trouser legs lose an inch or more, the jacket skirt rides up, and a gi that fitted last month suddenly does not.
Shrinkage is not uniform across a jacket either. The body and the collar pull at different rates, so the lapels warp and the jacket stops sitting flat.
Patches are the other casualty. Embroidered and screen printed patches move at a different rate from the cotton under them, so they pucker at the edges and the print cracks.
Double stitched seams pull in as well, which is what leaves a permanent ripple down a sleeve.
If a dryer has to be used at all, use the lowest heat setting or air tumble only, pull the gi out damp, and hang it for the last stretch. The final twenty percent of drying is where all the damage happens.
Colour bleed from a new gi or a fresh belt
A new blue or black gi will give up dye for its first several washes, and a new coloured belt will give up a remarkable amount.
Belt dye is the worst of it. Belts are often dyed cheaply, and a coloured belt in a load with a white gi turns the gi permanently pink or grey in one cycle.
Wash anything new and coloured on its own, in cold water, for the first three or four washes. Cold slows dye release considerably.
A dye catcher sheet in the drum is cheap and works. Use one every time a new coloured item is in the load.
Do not leave a wet coloured item sitting in a pile with anything light. Dye transfers in a damp heap faster than it does in moving water.
If a belt is washed at all, and plenty of people never wash one, it goes in alone and cold and gets hung to dry. Expect it to fade and expect the stitching to stiffen.
Keep white gis on their own permanently rather than only when something is new. It is the simplest rule in the room and the one that holds.
Mat towels and the smell that keeps coming back
Mat towels are cotton terry, and terry loops trap two things very well. Body oil and detergent.
That combination is the entire explanation for a towel that smells fine folded and sour within a minute of getting wet. The residue is still in the loop and moisture and warmth bring it back out.
More detergent makes it worse, because the surplus never rinses and becomes part of the deposit.
The reset is a strip wash. Hot water, a small dose of detergent, a scoop of washing soda, no other additives, and two rinses.
Fabric softener has to go entirely. It coats terry with a film that kills absorbency and gives oil something to hold onto.
Run towels in a load with room to move. Terry needs mechanical action and water flow, and a packed drum gives it neither.
Dry them fully. A towel folded at ninety percent dry is the single most common source of the smell everybody is trying to wash out.
A mat room laundry routine that keeps kit in service
Empty the bag as soon as it comes off the mat. Damp cotton sealed in nylon for a few hours does more harm than a week of training does.
Wash gis inside out in cold or warm water with a normal dose of detergent. Cotton that heavy does not need heat to come clean, it needs water volume and time.
Skip bleach on anything, including white gis. It weakens cotton, yellows it over time, and destroys the elastane in a rash guard outright.
Run rash guards and shorts as their own load, warm rather than cold, with a smaller detergent dose and an extra rinse.
Rotate two gis rather than washing one every night. A gi that gets a full day to dry between sessions lasts years longer.
Turn the bag inside out and let it air dry as well. Washing everything that came out of it and putting it back into a damp bag accomplishes nothing.
The Mesa part
Desert air is a real advantage here, and it lands on exactly the item that is hardest to deal with anywhere else. A heavy gi that would hang damp for two days in a humid climate can be dry through the collar by evening in the open air of an Arizona afternoon.
Direct sun is the trade attached to that. Ultraviolet at this intensity fades a blue or black gi quickly and weakens cotton fibre over a season, so the right spot is deep shade or indoors with a fan, not the middle of a sunny yard. The drying speed barely changes and the colour survives.
Mineral heavy water is the local drag on mat room laundry. Deposit builds up inside a dense weave and leaves a gi feeling like board, heavier than it should be and slower to dry, and the usual reaction of adding more detergent only adds to the film. A smaller dose, a water conditioner and an extra rinse fixes it.
Summer heat inside a parked car is the last one, and it is the fastest way to ruin a week of kit. A closed bag of damp training gear left in a vehicle through a July afternoon comes back with a smell set deep in the weave, and that smell takes a full strip wash to shift. Carry the bag inside.
Where a week of gis fits in one drum
A week of mat room laundry is mostly heavy cotton, and heavy cotton needs room to move and a great deal of water.

The short version
Mat room laundry splits into two piles. Heavy cotton gis wash inside out in cold or warm water, never with bleach, and never in a hot dryer, because high heat shrinks sleeves and legs, warps the lapels and puckers patches. Hang a gi on a wide hanger with the lapels spread and a fan on it, since the collar core is the last part to dry and slow drying is what sets the smell. Wash new coloured gis and belts alone in cold with a dye catcher. Run rash guards warm with a light detergent dose and a second rinse, and strip wash mat towels with washing soda and no softener.
