Walk down the laundry aisle at any store in Cobb County and the scented products outnumber the unscented ones by a wide margin. Detergent, softener, dryer sheets, and the little beads you add for extra scent, which exist only to make laundry smell like something.
There is a reasonable case for scent and a reasonable case against it, and the answer changes depending on what you are washing. Bedding in a humid Georgia climate is the case where it matters most.
What “clean smell” actually is
Clean has no smell. Properly washed fabric smells like nothing at all.
What we have learned to read as clean is fragrance, and it is added specifically to be detectable after the wash. Manufacturers formulate it to bind to fibers and release slowly over days, because a customer who can still smell the detergent on Thursday feels like it worked.
That is a marketing achievement rather than a cleaning one. The fragrance is not doing anything to the soil in your laundry.
Which is worth knowing, because it explains the central problem: fragrance can mask a smell it did not remove. In a humid climate, where the underlying issue is frequently mildew starting in fabric that never fully dried, a heavily scented detergent lets you keep not solving it. The bedding smells like a meadow for two days and then smells sour again, and the cycle repeats.
The case for unscented on bedding
You breathe it for eight hours. Your face is against a pillowcase all night. Whatever is on that fabric is what you are inhaling, at close range, for a third of your life. Fragrance is a common trigger for headaches, congestion, and asthma symptoms, and people frequently do not connect nighttime symptoms to the pillowcase.
It is the leading cause of laundry skin irritation. Ahead of dyes, ahead of enzymes, ahead of the surfactants people usually blame. And “fragrance” on a label can be dozens of undisclosed compounds, so if you react there is no way to identify which one.
It hides problems in a climate that creates them. Marietta summers are humid enough that bedding does not always dry fully between nights, and mildew needs only damp fabric rather than standing water. An unscented wash tells you the truth about whether your laundry is actually clean.
Scent builds up. Fragrance compounds accumulate in fabric over many washes, and a pillowcase washed in scented detergent for two years carries considerably more than one wash deposits.
The case for scented
It is not nothing.
People genuinely enjoy it, and enjoying your bed is a real thing rather than a frivolous one. If scented sheets make you look forward to getting into bed, that has value.
It is also a reasonable choice on items that are not against your face all night. Towels, outerwear, and everyday clothing are all lower-contact than a pillowcase.
And nobody in the household reacting to it is a legitimate reason to keep using it.
The reasonable middle: unscented on bedding, and whatever you like on the rest.
If you are switching
The first few loads will smell like nothing and it will feel wrong. That is the point and it passes in about two weeks.
If your bedding smells actively bad once you remove the fragrance, that is useful information rather than a failure. The smell was there the whole time. Now you can fix it.
What usually fixes it: wash warm rather than cold, since cold does not remove body oil and body oil is what odor bacteria live on. Half a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle, which is mildly acidic and breaks down the residue holding the smell. Less detergent than you have been using, because residue itself holds odor. And dry things completely.
For bedding that has genuinely gone musty, soak it in an oxygen bleach solution overnight before washing, then wash hot with vinegar in the rinse.
Scent beads and dryer sheets
Scent beads are fragrance with no cleaning function at all. If you are reconsidering scent, this is the easiest thing to stop buying.
Dryer sheets deposit both fragrance and a waxy softening coating. On bedding that coating reduces breathability, which in a Georgia summer is working against you, and on towels it destroys absorbency.
Wool dryer balls handle static and shorten drying time without adding anything. In a humid climate the shorter drying time is worth having on its own.
Where the humidity actually gets solved
The recurring problem here is the comforter that never dries all the way through. A household dryer packed with one cannot tumble it, so the outside dries and the core does not, and the core is where a musty smell starts and where it survives every subsequent wash.
That is the smell people cover with fragrance for years.

Clean smells like nothing, and fragrance is formulated to persist rather than to clean. On bedding, unscented is the better call, because you breathe it all night and because in this climate scent hides mildew rather than removing it. Scented is fine on towels and clothing if nobody is reacting. If you switch and your sheets smell bad, that smell was always there. Warm water, vinegar in the rinse, less detergent, and dry everything completely.
