If the water in your machine foams the instant detergent hits it, and the wash still leaves clothes feeling faintly slick, you are almost certainly using a hard water dose in soft water. The instructions printed on the box assume average water, and soft water needs considerably less than average.

What hardness actually measures
Hardness is the quantity of dissolved calcium and magnesium in a water supply, picked up as the water passes through rock on its way to you.
Water that runs off granite or through peat collects very little and stays soft. Water that sits in chalk or limestone collects a lot and arrives hard.
It is usually reported in grains per gallon or parts per million, on a scale that runs from very soft up through moderately hard to very hard.
None of this is a quality judgement about the water in any other sense. It describes mineral content and nothing more.
For washing it matters because those two minerals react directly with detergent.
Your supplier publishes the hardness of the supply, and knowing the actual figure beats guessing from how the shower feels.
Why soft water lathers so heavily
Detergent works through molecules with a water loving end and an oil loving end, which gather around soil and lift it off the fibre.
Calcium and magnesium grab those molecules first. Every mineral ion in the water takes a detergent molecule out of circulation before it has cleaned anything.
In hard water a real share of the first dose goes on neutralising minerals rather than washing, which is precisely why hard water needs more.
In soft water there is almost nothing to neutralise, so the whole dose goes straight to work and foam appears immediately.
Lather is the visible sign of free detergent sitting unused in the water. A drum full of suds means a drum full of surplus.
People read a heavy lather as strength and add more the next time, which is exactly the wrong direction to move in.
The dose on the box and what it assumes
Dosing instructions are written for a national market and assume water somewhere in the middle of the hardness range.
They also assume a full drum and average soil, and most household loads are neither.
A typical panel offers one figure for normal use and a larger one for heavy soil or hard water. There is rarely a line for soft water.
In genuinely soft water, somewhere between half and two thirds of the standard dose handles an ordinary load.
Pods are the awkward case, because the dose is fixed and a single pod is often more than a soft water load needs. Powder and liquid let you measure downward.
Cut the dose by a third and see whether anything comes out less clean. In soft water it generally does not.
What surplus detergent leaves behind
Detergent that was never needed does not vanish in the rinse. A portion of it stays in the fibre.
That residue is why laundry comes out feeling stiff, or looking slightly grey and flat rather than actually dirty.
Towels lose their absorbency, since coated loops do not take up water the way bare cotton does.
Dark clothing shows it most clearly, as a faint chalky bloom that appears once the fabric dries.
Residue also holds soil. A garment carrying leftover product picks up dirt faster than a clean one and starts to smell sooner in wear.
In a front loader, surplus foam cushions the load and cuts the mechanical action, so the wash gets gentler at the precise moment you were trying to make it stronger.
The slippery feel on skin and fabric
Water that feels slippery on the hands is the most common description people give of soft water, and it tends to puzzle them.
Soap and detergent lather freely and rinse away slowly in soft water, and what you are feeling is a thin film of product still sitting on your skin.
Fabric behaves the same way. A load washed with a heavy dose comes out feeling smooth and faintly slick, then dries stiff a few hours later.
There is nothing wrong with the water. The sensation is a dosing signal and it is worth reading as one.
If soap in the shower seems to take forever to rinse off, the same thing is happening inside the machine.
The response is less product rather than more rinsing.
Why an extra rinse earns its place
Rinsing is dilution. Each rinse carries off a share of what remains, and the more there was to begin with the more rinses it takes to get there.
Soft water rinses very efficiently per litre, and here it is working against a larger quantity of dissolved product than it should have to.
An extra rinse costs water and time, and it clears the residue that a single rinse leaves behind.
It matters most on terry, on bedding, on anything worn against skin, and on anything that felt slick coming out of the drum.
Reducing the dose is the better first move. The extra rinse is the backstop for a drum that is already full of foam.
Half a cup of white vinegar in the rinse compartment cuts residue and gives you what fabric softener was meant to give you, without coating the fibre.
What soft water is genuinely better at
Washing in soft water is easier in almost every respect and the advantages are worth knowing about.
No mineral deposit accumulates in the fabric, so whites hold their brightness longer and colours stay closer to what they were.
Machines fare better too. No scale forms on a heating element or inside a pump, and scale is the main mechanical cost of hard water.
Cleaning goes further per unit of detergent, so a smaller dose does more work rather than less.
Towels stay softer without any help, because the stiffness people blame on air drying is very often mineral deposit rather than the drying method.
The single real cost is that the margin for over dosing is much narrower than it is elsewhere.
Coming from a hard water part of the country
Moving from a hard supply to a soft one catches people out for months on end.
Everything learned about needing extra detergent, extra softener and a descaler stops applying, and the habits outlast the move.
The first sign is usually heavy foaming, or a front loader taking longer than it used to because it is adding rinses on its own to deal with suds.
Soap in the shower is the fastest test available. Instant lather and a long rinse means the supply is soft.
Halve the dose and work upward rather than downward, and do that before deciding the new machine or the new house has something wrong with it.
Give it a few loads to settle. Fabric carrying years of mineral deposit takes several washes in a soft supply before it comes clean and starts to feel different.
The Kent part
Water across the Puget Sound area is notably soft, and it is soft enough that anyone arriving from a hard supply notices it in the first shower they take.
The practical consequence is chronic over dosing. Detergent habits are formed by whatever water somebody grew up with, and a measure that was correct in another part of the country is too much here.
The wet season is the second factor and it compounds the first. Product left sitting in fibre is what turns stale when fabric takes a long time to dry, and fabric takes a long time to dry here for a good stretch of the year. Cutting the dose does as much about that as any drying trick.
Fabric softener is close to pointless in a soft supply, and it makes the drying side worse, since a coated fibre gives up water reluctantly. Leave it out on terry and on anything that has to finish drying indoors. On the machine side, scale is not the enemy here, so what needs clearing occasionally is detergent film in the drum and the door seal, and an empty hot cycle handles that.
Where a small dose still rinses out
The whole point of dosing down is that what goes in actually comes back out again, and that depends on how much water the machine moves.
The machines at our self-service laundry on Pacific Highway South move a great deal more water per cycle than a home unit, and the water volume against the drum size is what clears dissolved product out of fibre rather than leaving a film in it.
