A portion of every dose goes to binding minerals rather than to cleaning, and only what is left does any work.<\/p>\n<p>That is the whole reason a hard water area needs a larger dose, and the reason fitting your detergent to your water is a real adjustment rather than a preference. The first part of the measure is spent before any soil has been touched.<\/p>\n<p>The same reaction produces an insoluble film. It settles on fabric as a grey dullness and inside machines as scale.<\/p>\n<p>Soft water has very little of that. Four signs tell you most of what you need before you fit your detergent to your water.<\/p>\n<p>Soap lather. Hand soap in hard water gives thin lather and a slippery film on the basin. In soft water it lathers heavily and feels slick on the skin long after rinsing.<\/p>\n<p>Kettles, taps and shower heads. White crusty deposit around an outlet is limescale and it means hard water. Nothing at all after a year means soft.<\/p>\n<p>Glassware, which comes out of a dishwasher cloudy in hard water and stays cloudy when dry.<\/p>\n<p>Towels. Hard water leaves them stiff and rough. A heavy dose in soft water leaves them slick and slow to take up water.<\/p>\n<p>A test strip costs very little and gives a number in grains per gallon, and your water utility publishes an annual quality report carrying the same figure. Knowing the number turns matching your detergent to your water into arithmetic rather than guesswork.<\/p>\n<h2>Matching your detergent to your water when it is hard<\/h2>\n<p>In a hard water area you have two levers, dose and formula, and using both beats pushing either one hard.<\/p>\n<p>Raise the dose above the label figure, since the label assumes moderate water. A quarter to a half more is the usual range, and going far past that stops helping.<\/p>\n<p>Better than raising the dose alone is choosing a formula built for the job. Detergents carrying builders and chelating agents bind minerals before the minerals can bind the surfactants.<\/p>\n<p>Washing soda is the cheap version of that idea. A tablespoon or two straight into the drum softens the water and lets an ordinary dose behave normally.<\/p>\n<p>Warm water helps. Minerals interfere less as temperature rises, so a cold wash in hard water is operating with the least margin it has.<\/p>\n<p>And add a rinse. Hard water rinses less effectively, and residue left in the weave is what makes hard water laundry feel harsh.<\/p>\n<h2>Soft water and the residue problem<\/h2>\n<p>Soft water is the easier case for matching your detergent to your water, and the one people get wrong more often, because the failure looks like the opposite of what it is.<\/p>\n<p>With almost nothing in the water competing for the detergent, a full label dose is far more than the load needs.<\/p>\n<p>The excess does not disappear. It stays in the fabric, because rinsing carries surfactant away only up to a point, and heavy suds cushion the load and cut the mechanical action doing the cleaning.<\/p>\n<p>That is why soft water households report clothes that feel slippery, towels that push water away, and a general sense that nothing is rinsing properly.<\/p>\n<p>The fix is to cut the dose, usually by a third to a half, and then adjust from there over a few loads.<\/p>\n<p>Skip fabric softener entirely. It is a coating, and in water that already leaves fabric coated it is the fastest route to towels that no longer dry anything.<\/p>\n<h2>Powder against liquid<\/h2>\n<p>Form matters as much as dose when you match your detergent to your water, and the difference between the two is not marketing.<\/p>\n<p>Powders usually carry more builder content, which is exactly what mineral rich water needs, and they generally cost less per wash.<\/p>\n<p>The catch is dissolving. Powder in cold water can fail to dissolve fully and leave white specks on dark fabric, so dissolve it in a jug of warm water first or run a warm wash.<\/p>\n<p>Liquid dissolves instantly and performs well in cold water, which suits soft water and lightly soiled loads.<\/p>\n<p>Liquid also pre-treats. Rubbing a little into a collar or a cuff is something powder cannot do.<\/p>\n<p>Pods are the least flexible option. The dose is fixed, and dose is the exact thing you want to change in both hard and soft water, so they suit moderate water and nothing else particularly well.<\/p>\n<h2>Testing what your water is doing to your laundry<\/h2>\n<p>The fabric tells you more than a number does, so run these checks before you settle on a routine. Each one shows a different way of getting your detergent to your water wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The white towel test. Wash a white cotton towel with your usual dose and no softener, dry it, and look at it in daylight. A grey or yellow cast means mineral deposit and too little effective detergent.<\/p>\n<p>The absorbency test. A clean towel should take up water immediately. If water beads and sits on the surface there is residue on it, from softener or from overdosing.<\/p>\n<p>The rinse water test. Stop the machine partway through a rinse and look through the door. Suds still present late in the rinse mean the dose is too high for your water.<\/p>\n<p>The stiffness test. Line dry a towel with no softener. In hard water it comes out stiff, and stiffness that disappears once you add washing soda confirms hardness rather than technique.<\/p>\n<p>Change one thing at a time. Adjusting dose, formula and temperature together tells you nothing about which one worked.<\/p>\n<h2>The machine benefits from the same decision<\/h2>\n<p>Getting your detergent to your water right helps the machine as much as it helps the clothes.<\/p>\n<p>Scale builds on heating elements and inside hoses in hard water, and a scaled element burns more energy to reach the same temperature.<\/p>\n<p>A monthly empty hot cycle with washing soda, or with a cup of white vinegar, keeps deposit from establishing. Do not use both together, since they cancel each other out.<\/p>\n<p>In soft water the machine problem is a different one. Detergent residue collects in the door seal and the dispenser drawer and turns musty, and the answer there is less detergent rather than more cleaning cycles.<\/p>\n<p>Keep a proper measure rather than eyeballing the cap, since an eyeballed dose drifts upward over months without anyone noticing.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, dose is the one setting that improves the machine and the laundry at the same time.<\/p>\n<h2>The Tempe part<\/h2>\n<p>Water here is hard, and that sets the starting point for everyone in the area.
