Get the count and the rotation right and the rest is straightforward.

Working out how many you actually go through

Start by counting, because most small operations are out by half.

Count one towel per person per visit, then add the second one plenty of people take, then add staff, then add any you use as cloths on equipment.

A studio running six classes a day with a dozen people in each is handling somewhere close to a hundred gym towels, before anyone doubles up.

Then count what you own, and count it as complete sets rather than as a total. The useful number is how many full days you can cover.

One set means today’s washing has to be done, dried and folded before tomorrow opens, which works right up until something goes wrong.

Two sets means the washing can happen when it suits you, and that single change removes most of the pressure from the job.

Why a bin of damp gym towels turns sour

A used towel is damp, warm and folded in on itself, which is the exact condition that produces the smell.

The smell comes from what is in the towel. Body oil, sweat salts and detergent left behind from the last wash all break down in warm damp cotton and the result is the sour note everyone recognises.

Time is the only part of this you control. A pile of damp gym towels smells noticeably different after four hours than it does after one.

The bin itself makes it worse or better. A sealed plastic bin holds the moisture and the warmth against the fabric and gets there far faster than an open one.

Use an open mesh or slatted hamper, keep it out of direct sun and off a warm floor, and do not leave it standing overnight.

Never let gym towels sit heaped in a closed bag in a car, which is the fastest possible version of the same problem.

A towel that has already gone sour will not come right on a short cold cycle, because the residue that caused it is exactly what a light wash leaves behind.

The two set rotation

Two complete sets is the single change that fixes most small studio laundry, and it costs less than people assume.

One set is in use while the other is clean and stacked. When the doors close, the used set goes to be washed and the clean set opens tomorrow.

Nothing has to be turned around under time pressure, and time pressure is what causes half dried loads and skipped rinses.

Buy the two sets in different colours or with a different stitched edge. You can then see at a glance which set is out, and you notice immediately when one set is quietly disappearing.

Alternate which set goes out first rather than always reaching for the same pile. Even wear means both sets reach the end of their life together.

Retire them together as well. A shelf holding towels of four different ages folds badly, stacks unevenly and looks worse than a shelf of matched ones.

Keep a small reserve of a dozen aside from both sets for the days that run long.

Softener is why they stopped absorbing

Fabric softener works by leaving a thin waxy film on the fibre. That is the whole mechanism, and everything else follows from it.

The film makes fabric feel soft and it makes fabric shed water, which is precisely backwards for a towel.

A towel that pushes sweat around instead of taking it up gets used once, thrown in the bin and counted as used, so your daily total climbs for no reason.

The same film traps residue in the loops, which is why softened towels start to smell sooner and hold the smell longer once they do.

Dryer sheets do the same job by a different route and should be left out for the same reason.

If a set is already coated, run it hot with a cup of white vinegar in place of detergent, then run a second wash with a small dose of detergent and no vinegar. Two or three rounds of that strips most of the buildup.

After that, leave softener out permanently and the towels stay absorbent for their whole life.

Washing a day of gym towels

Wash them on their own. They shed heavily and they want a longer, warmer cycle than almost anything else in the building.

Do not overfill the drum. Towels need room to move and they need water volume around them, and a drum packed with wet terry will not rinse properly no matter how long it runs.

Use the warmest wash the towels are rated for. Warm water lifts body oil out of the loops and cold water largely does not, and oil left behind is what comes back later as a smell.

Use less detergent than instinct suggests rather than more. Excess detergent does not rinse out of terry, and the residue then holds onto soil.

Add an extra rinse instead of adding detergent. Rinsing is what actually decides how a towel smells in three days.

Leave bleach as an occasional tool rather than a routine one, since it weakens cotton over a few dozen cycles and gym towels already run a very high cycle count.

If a load comes out still smelling damp in the folds, wash it again rather than drying it. Heat sets the smell in and then it takes several washes to shift.

Drying fully rather than nearly

A towel that is ninety percent dry is a towel that will smell by tomorrow, and this is the step most often rushed.

Terry holds moisture at the base of the loops long after the surface feels dry to a hand, so the surface tells you very little.

Check by opening a towel from the middle of the load and feeling the inside of a fold, which is the last place to dry.

Do not fold or stack them warm. Spread them out to cool first, because a warm stack traps its own remaining moisture against itself.

Medium heat for the full time beats high heat for a short time. Overdrying does wear cotton out, and the answer is a longer gentler cycle rather than a shorter hotter one.

Clean the lint filter every single load. Towels shed more than anything else you will run, and a loaded filter is the most common reason a dryer suddenly takes twice as long.

Store the folded stacks somewhere with air around them rather than sealed in a cupboard.

Mats, cloths and the rest of the kit

Mats are usually wiped rather than washed. Where a mat is washable it goes in cold on a gentle cycle and never into a dryer, since heat deforms the foam permanently.

Hand wraps and cotton straps wash fine with the towel load. Anything with leather or with foam padding does not.

Resistance bands are wiped and dried, never washed, because detergent degrades the rubber.

Studio blankets, bolster covers and similar soft goods wash like ordinary cotton and want the same rule about softener where they sit against skin.

Staff shirts wash apart from the towel load. Terry lint on a dark polo is extremely visible and it is entirely avoidable.

Cloths used to wipe down equipment never share a load with gym towels, because they carry residue from whatever spray is used on the machines.

The Phoenix part

The dry air is a genuine advantage on the drying half of this. Towels come out of a dryer properly dry and stay that way on the shelf, and a stack that would go musty in a humid climate simply does not. The trade is dust, which settles onto open shelving quickly, so folded stacks are better in a closed cabinet or under a cover than out in the room.

The heat works against you on the used side, and that is where the schedule gets decided. A hamper standing in a warm room in July reaches the sour stage in a couple of hours rather than most of a day, so the same day rule is stricter here than it would be somewhere cool. The day’s used towels get washed the day they are used.

Hard water is the main thing working against the towels themselves. Mineral in the water combines with detergent and leaves deposit down in the terry, and that deposit is what makes a towel stiff, less absorbent and quicker to pick up a smell. It builds slowly and it is the usual reason a set feels finished after a year of daily use.

The answer to hardness is water volume rather than a bigger scoop. A large drum with plenty of water per towel carries the deposit away, while adding more detergent to hard water leaves more residue rather than less. A dose of washing soda in the wash tackles the hardness itself and lets you use less detergent at the same time.

Where a day of towels fits in one load

The whole rotation depends on a day of towels going through in one wash rather than four.

The machines at our self-service laundry on West Camelback Road take a full day of towels in a single drum, with enough water around each one to rinse the loops properly rather than pushing detergent back into them

Our machines and the store are cleaned daily.

Nou wash-dry-fold service covers the everyday laundry.

For general guidance, The American Cleaning Institute publishes a fabric care guide that is a useful cross-check.

The short version

Count what you actually go through, then own two full sets so one is always clean while the other is being washed. Used towels go into an open hamper rather than a sealed bin, out of the sun, and get washed the same day, because damp warm terry turns sour within hours. Wash them alone, warm, with less detergent than you think and an extra rinse, and never with softener, since the film it leaves is what stops a towel absorbing. Dry them fully, checking the inside of a fold rather than the surface, and let them cool before folding.

WaveMAX Feniks is at 1615 W Camelback Rd, STE 101, easy to reach from Phoenix and the surrounding area.
