Anything still counting down, or still showing a stage, is running.<\/p>\n<p>Give it five minutes before you intervene. A great many reports of a dead machine are made in the middle of an ordinary pause.<\/p>\n<p>Front loaders in particular tumble and rest constantly by design, and on a gentle setting the gap between bursts can run past a minute.<\/p>\n<p>Opening the door during a pause is what turns a pause into a real stop, because the machine then has to restart part of its sequence.<\/p>\n<p>So the first question to ask about anything that stops mid cycle is whether it has actually stopped or is simply between stages.<\/p>\n<h2>What to check when a machine stops mid cycle<\/h2>\n<p>Work through it in order and most cases resolve inside a minute.<\/p>\n<p>Look at the display first. An error code, a flashing indicator or a lit stage tells you more than anything else available to you.<\/p>\n<p>Then listen. A hum with no movement means a motor under load. Silence with a lit panel means a wait. Silence with a dead panel means power.<\/p>\n<p>Check the door. On a front loader the lock is mechanical, and a sleeve caught proud of the seal keeps it from engaging.<\/p>\n<p>Check the drum if the machine will let you open it, and look for everything piled against one side.<\/p>\n<p>Check the timer. Sitting on the same minute for ten minutes means stuck. Counting down slowly means running.<\/p>\n<h2>The unbalanced load, which is the usual answer<\/h2>\n<p>A drum spinning at speed with all the weight on one side generates enough force to walk the whole machine across a floor.<\/p>\n<p>Every washer has a sensor watching for that, and the standard response is to stop, add a little water, tumble slowly to redistribute, and try the spin again.<\/p>\n<p>Each redistribution attempt takes a few minutes and it can repeat several times, which is why an unbalanced load looks like a machine starting and stopping over and over.<\/p>\n<p>If it never balances, the machine finishes at a reduced spin speed or skips the spin entirely, and the load comes out far wetter than usual.<\/p>\n<p>Single heavy items are the usual culprit. One duvet, one bath mat, one pair of jeans on their own with nothing to sit against.<\/p>\n<p>The fix is to open it, pull everything apart, spread it evenly around the drum and restart the spin. Adding two towels to a lone heavy item gives it something to balance against.<\/p>\n<p>Balance is the reason behind most of what stops mid cycle, and it is also the one cause you can correct yourself in under a minute.<\/p>\n<h2>An overloaded drum<\/h2>\n<p>An overloaded machine halts for a different reason, which is that the motor cannot turn what is in front of it.<\/p>\n<p>Wet fabric weighs a great deal more than dry fabric, so a drum that looked sensibly full at loading can be well past capacity once it is saturated.<\/p>\n<p>The symptom is a strain or a hum with little or no drum movement, sometimes followed by the machine giving up and posting a fault.<\/p>\n<p>Overloading also stops the load washing, since clothes need space to move through water. A packed drum rotates as a single mass and the fabric never moves against itself.<\/p>\n<p>The rule is the one everybody ignores. That is normal behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>Never force a door on a machine that still has water inside it.<\/p>\n<h2>Draining, and why it looks like a stop<\/h2>\n<p>Draining is the stage most often mistaken for a failure, because the pump is quiet and the drum does not turn while it runs.<\/p>\n<p>A machine that cannot drain halts before the spin and sits there full of water, which looks alarming and is usually the least serious thing on this list.<\/p>\n<p>The common causes are a blocked filter, a kinked drain hose, or a hose pushed too far down a standpipe so it siphons.<\/p>\n<p>Coins, hair grips, buttons and small stones out of work trouser turnups all end up in the filter, and clearing it is a two minute job with a shallow tray and a towel underneath.<\/p>\n<p>After a drain problem, run a drain and spin on its own rather than restarting the entire cycle from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>If it drains cleanly on its own but halts at the same place every single cycle, the pump is struggling rather than blocked.<\/p>\n<h2>Water supply and the fill stage<\/h2>\n<p>A machine that halts right at the start is usually waiting for water rather than failing to work.<\/p>\n<p>Both taps have to be open. The cold one gets turned off and forgotten far more often than the hot one does.<\/p>\n<p>Inlet hoses have small filter screens at the tap end, and those clog with grit over time. The machine reads a clogged screen as low pressure and waits.<\/p>\n<p>Some models fill partway, tumble, then fill again, and that second fill is easy to mistake for a stall.<\/p>\n<p>Low pressure elsewhere in the house at the same moment can slow a fill enough that the machine times out and posts a fault.<\/p>\n<p>A machine that fills and keeps filling is a different problem entirely, and that one calls for the taps to be shut off straight away.<\/p>\n<h2>When it has genuinely stopped<\/h2>\n<p>The signs are consistent. A dead panel, a burning smell, water on the floor, a drum that will not turn by hand, or the same code returning immediately after a reset.<\/p>\n<p>A single unexplained halt earns one reset. Cut the power at the wall, wait a minute, restore it, and run a drain and spin.<\/p>\n<p>The same halt three times running is a fault rather than a loading problem, and rearranging the clothes will not change it.<\/p>\n<p>Note what stage it was at when it happened, because the stage points at which part is at fault.<\/p>\n<p>Write any error code down before you clear it, since it disappears on a reset and it is the most useful thing an engineer can be told.<\/p>\n<p>Then get the clothes out and washed somewhere else rather than leaving a wet load standing while you work on the machine.
