<\/figure>\nWhat a triple loader actually is<\/h2>\n
The name refers to capacity rather than to anything about the mechanism.<\/p>\n
A triple loader holds roughly three times what a standard domestic washer holds, and exact figures vary between machines and manufacturers.<\/p>\n
In practice that means a queen duvet with room to move, or four or five ordinary loads of clothes at once, or every towel in a house.<\/p>\n
It is a front loader. The drum turns on a horizontal axis, the load lifts and falls through the water, and there is no central post in the way.<\/p>\n
It uses more water than a small machine and less water per garment, which is the entire point of it.<\/p>\n
Cycle times are much the same as a smaller machine. A bigger drum does not mean a longer wait.<\/p>\n
Why one big drum beats three small ones<\/h2>\n
Some things cannot be split across smaller machines at all, and that is the obvious case for a triple loader.<\/p>\n
A duvet, a comforter, a mattress protector or a sleeping bag has to be washed as one piece, and an item that cannot move in a drum does not get clean.<\/p>\n
Rinsing is the less obvious case and the more important one. Rinsing depends on the ratio of water to fabric, and a packed small drum cannot dilute what the detergent has lifted.<\/p>\n
That is why the same bedding comes out of a domestic machine feeling harsh and out of a large one feeling soft.<\/p>\n
A single big load also finishes at one time, which matters when the next step is a dryer with a queue behind it.<\/p>\n
And it takes one trip across the room instead of three.<\/p>\n
Filling it to the right level<\/h2>\n
The commonest mistake with a triple loader is filling it to the top because the space is sitting there.<\/p>\n
Load dry items to about three quarters of the drum, loosely, without pressing anything down.<\/p>\n
You should be able to put a flat hand into the drum above the load and turn it freely.<\/p>\n
Fabric needs somewhere to go. Washing happens because items move through water and rub against one another, and a drum packed to the door has nothing moving at all.<\/p>\n
Underfilling wastes just as much in the other direction. A quarter full machine spends the water of a big drum on a small pile.<\/p>\n
For bedding, one duvet or two or three blankets is a full load by itself. Do not top it up with clothes to fill the gaps.<\/p>\n
Distributing weight so the drum can spin<\/h2>\n
The spin is where a badly loaded triple loader reveals itself.<\/p>\n
A washer spins at several hundred revolutions a minute, and it can only do that if the weight is spread evenly around the drum wall.<\/p>\n
If the load has gathered on one side, the machine senses the imbalance, slows, redistributes and tries again. Often enough, it gives up and finishes on a low spin.<\/p>\n
A low spin means a much wetter load and a much longer dry, and that is the real cost of loading carelessly.<\/p>\n
So place items around the drum one at a time rather than tipping everything in as one lump.<\/p>\n
Shake out anything rolled or knotted before it goes in, since a knotted sheet is one dense mass wherever you put it.<\/p>\n
If a machine bangs during the spin, stop it, open the door, redistribute by hand and restart. It takes a minute and saves a whole cycle.<\/p>\n
Why a bulky item needs company<\/h2>\n
One bulky item on its own is the classic cause of an unbalanced spin.<\/p>\n
A single duvet, sleeping bag or heavy coat absorbs a great deal of water, holds it in one place, and slides around the drum as a single mass.<\/p>\n
Give it company. Two or three items of similar weight balance each other and tumble properly.<\/p>\n
A duvet with a sheet and a couple of pillowcases is a far better load than a duvet alone.<\/p>\n
Do not pair a bulky item with something much lighter. A duvet and a handful of thin shirts still behaves as one heavy object with padding.<\/p>\n
Fastenings are the other half of this. Do up duvet cover buttons, because an open cover swallows everything else in the load and arrives at the spin as a sack with all the weight inside it.<\/p>\n
Detergent in a big drum<\/h2>\n
More water does not mean proportionally more detergent, and this is where people spend more and get worse results.<\/p>\n
Dose for the size of the load, not the size of the machine. Detergent works on soil, and the soil arrives with the clothes.<\/p>\n
Liquid dissolves faster than powder in a cool wash, which matters more in a big drum where undissolved powder can sit trapped in a fold of bedding.<\/p>\n
Use the dispenser rather than tipping detergent onto the load, since concentrated product resting against fabric can leave a mark.<\/p>\n
If a load is genuinely dirty, add time or temperature rather than dose.<\/p>\n
Skip softener on towelling and on anything technical, where the film it leaves reduces absorbency.<\/p>\n
Getting a big load out and dried<\/h2>\n
A wet load from a large machine weighs more than it looks, so bring a cart to the door rather than carrying an armful.<\/p>\n
Split it across two dryers instead of packing one. A dryer stuffed with everything that came out of a triple loader tumbles as a block and stays wet in the middle.<\/p>\n
Shake each item out as it goes in. Everything leaves a spin pressed flat against the drum wall in a shape it will hold onto.<\/p>\n
Duvets and heavy blankets take a long time and benefit from a couple of dryer balls keeping them open.<\/p>\n
Stop a large item halfway, turn it inside out, redistribute the filling by hand and then finish it.<\/p>\n
Test for damp by feeling through the thickest part rather than the surface, which dries first and tells you nothing.<\/p>\n

Hard water is the first local condition and it argues loudest for volume. Mineral rich water ties up part of every detergent dose and leaves deposit behind in fabric, and the only thing that carries that deposit out is water moving through the load. A large drum at a proper water level rinses in a way a packed small machine cannot, and that is the difference between towelling that stays soft and towelling that turns crunchy after a few months. Cold winters are the third and they are what fills a big machine. Heavy bedding, blankets, coats and layers all come round at the same point in the year, and those are precisely the items a domestic drum cannot handle. A winter duvet is a full load on its own anywhere, and it is the item people most often try to force into a machine that is too small for it.<\/p>\n
The dry air has one trap attached to it worth knowing about. It makes the outside of a thick blanket or a filled coat feel finished long before the middle is anywhere near dry, so judge a heavy item by pushing a hand into the thickest part rather than by how long the cycle ran.<\/p>\n
Where the big drums are<\/h2>\n
Bedding and backlogs both come down to whether the drum is large enough to let them move.<\/p>\n
