It is workwear with a particular fibre blend, a white that is expected to stay white, and a breast pocket that ruins more of them than any stain does. Lab coats go grey, then yellow, then limp, long before the fabric is anywhere near worn out.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"margin:0 auto 30px;max-width:480px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wavemaxlaundry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/clean-laundromat-daily.jpg\" alt=\"Lab coats and white workwear being washed and pressed at a clean laundromat\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;display:block;border-radius:12px;\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Cotton, poly cotton, and why the blend decides the routine<\/h2>\n<p>Almost all lab coats are one of two things. Full cotton, or a poly cotton blend sitting around sixty five percent polyester.<\/p>\n<p>Cotton takes hot water and repeated bleaching better than the blend does. It also creases hard, shrinks over the first few washes, and comes out of every wash needing to be pressed.<\/p>\n<p>Poly cotton holds its shape, dries quickly, resists creasing and barely shrinks. It also traps oil inside the polyester, yellows under chlorine bleach, and glazes at ironing temperatures that cotton takes without complaint.<\/p>\n<p>So the blend is a straight trade. Cotton looks better after ten years and takes ten years of attention to get there. Poly cotton looks acceptable for far less effort and has a shorter run at its best.<\/p>\n<p>Read the label before settling on a routine, because the two want opposite treatment on temperature and on bleaching, and a routine that suits one damages the other.<\/p>\n<p>Buttons matter as well. Plastic buttons soften and distort in a very hot wash, and replacing buttons is a great deal easier than replacing a coat.<\/p>\n<h2>Why white lab coats go grey<\/h2>\n<p>Grey is not dirt in the usual sense, which is why washing harder makes it worse rather than better.<\/p>\n<p>It is buildup of two things laid down across many washes. Detergent that never fully rinsed away, and mineral deposit left behind by the water.<\/p>\n<p>Those combine into a film sitting on the fibre. Film holds soil, dulls the surface and takes light differently, and the eye reads the result as grey.<\/p>\n<p>Overloading is one cause. A packed drum does not rinse, and a coat washed in a full load of other work clothing comes out carrying more residue than it went in with.<\/p>\n<p>Too much detergent is the other cause and it is the more common of the two. A larger dose does not make a white coat whiter, it only guarantees there is something left behind.<\/p>\n<p>Reversing it takes a strip wash. Run the coats through a long hot cycle with no detergent at all, then a second cycle with washing soda and oxygen bleach, then a plain rinse.<\/p>\n<p>After that, less detergent, smaller loads and an extra rinse holds the white where it should be with no further work.<\/p>\n<h2>Bleach, and why chlorine turns poly cotton yellow<\/h2>\n<p>Chlorine bleach is the reflex for anything white and it is the wrong tool for most lab coats.<\/p>\n<p>On cotton it works, at a price. Repeated chlorine weakens the fibre, and a coat bleached every wash goes thin at the cuffs and elbows well before it should.<\/p>\n<p>On poly cotton it does something far more visible. Chlorine reacts with the brighteners and the finish on the polyester, and the result is a permanent yellow cast that no amount of further bleaching lifts.<\/p>\n<p>It also reacts with what is already sitting in the fabric. Body oil, some hand products and old detergent residue yellow rather than lift when chlorine reaches them.<\/p>\n<p>Oxygen bleach is the alternative and it suits both blends. It works through warm water and time rather than through strength, so an hour of soaking achieves more than a heavier dose does.<\/p>\n<p>For a coat that has already gone yellow, a long soak in oxygen bleach with washing soda is the only approach with a real chance of working, and it is worth two attempts before writing the coat off.<\/p>\n<h2>Ink in the pocket, which is how most coats are lost<\/h2>\n<p>A pen left in the breast pocket is the single most common way lab coats are ruined, and the damage is done in the dryer rather than in the wash.<\/p>\n<p>Empty every pocket before the coat goes near a machine. That is the entire prevention and there is no second method.<\/p>\n<p>Where ink is already on the fabric, treat it before it meets water and long before it meets heat.<\/p>\n<p>Lay the mark face down on a clean white cloth, apply isopropyl alcohol or a plain alcohol hand gel to the back of the stain, and let the ink push through into the cloth underneath.<\/p>\n<p>Move the cloth along as it takes up ink, so the stain is never sitting in what has already come out of it.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat until nothing more transfers, then wash normally in the warmest water the fabric allows.<\/p>\n<p>Check it before it goes anywhere near a dryer. Heat sets whatever is left permanently, and a coat dried with ink still in it is finished.<\/p>\n<p>A whole load contaminated by a burst pen is a different job again, and the drum itself needs wiping out with alcohol before anything else goes into it.<\/p>\n<h2>Work laundry stays separate from household laundry<\/h2>\n<p>Wash lab coats with other lab coats and keep them out of the family load. It is standard practice in most working settings and it is a sensible habit anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>The practical reasons are enough on their own. Coats want a different temperature, a different detergent dose and often a different bleaching approach from everything else in a house.<\/p>\n<p>They also carry lint, chalk, ink and whatever else the day put on them, and none of that belongs in a load of shirts.<\/p>\n<p>Carry them home in a separate bag rather than loose, and wash them the same day instead of leaving them sitting in it overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Some workplaces run their own arrangement and some leave it to the individual. Where a practice is dealing with real volume, a commercial laundry service is a reasonable option to look into rather than putting it all through a domestic machine.<\/p>\n<p>Where the washing happens at home, a fixed routine and a full load of nothing but coats is what makes it work week after week.<\/p>\n<h2>Pressing, and why a crisp coat is worth the ten minutes<\/h2>\n<p>A limp coat reads as a tired one, and in a clinical or teaching setting the coat is most of the first impression somebody forms.<\/p>\n<p>Cotton wants a hot iron and steam, and it presses beautifully, because that is what cotton does.<\/p>\n<p>Poly cotton wants a medium iron and nothing above it. Too hot and the polyester glazes, which is a shiny permanent mark that cannot be taken out.<\/p>\n<p>Lab coats press best while the fabric is still slightly damp, or with steam, and do the collar, the lapels and the cuffs first, since those are the parts anybody actually looks at.<\/p>\n<p>Hang it straight away rather than folding it. A coat folded into a bag while still warm takes a crease that stays put.<\/p>\n<p>Starch is a matter of taste. A light spray starch on cotton holds a clean line through a long day, and it wants washing out properly rather than being layered on wash after wash.<\/p>\n<h2>Rotation and when a coat should be replaced<\/h2>\n<p>Two lab coats is the minimum and three is better. One should never be worn two days running.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is partly appearance and partly the fabric itself. A day out of use lets the fibres dry through and recover, and a coat worn continuously wears at the cuffs and the elbows noticeably faster.<\/p>\n<p>Rotation also means a clean one is always available while another is in the wash, which is what stops a marked coat being worn for a second week.<\/p>\n<p>Retire one when the cuffs have gone grey and will not come back, when the fabric has thinned at the elbows, or when a yellow cast has set through the whole garment.<\/p>\n<p>Retire it too when the buttons no longer sit straight, when a pocket has torn at the corner, or when a stain has been through a dryer and set for good.<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing to be gained by nursing a coat past that point, and a tired one undoes all the effort spent on the rest of the routine.<\/p>\n<h2>The Durham part<\/h2>\n<p>Summers here are humid, and humidity is what turns damp workwear from an inconvenience into a problem. A coat left in a bag or in a car after a long day in warm damp air comes out with a musty smell by the next morning, and that smell is far easier to prevent than to remove afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>The same humidity slows indoor air drying to the point where it is not really practical in the middle of summer. A coat hung up indoors in that air stays damp for most of a day, and damp sitting in cotton is where the smell begins. Dry them properly rather than hanging them up and hoping.<\/p>\n<p>Winters here are mild and short, which is the easy part of the year. Heating runs for fewer months, so the very dry indoor air that causes trouble further north is less of a factor, and a line outside is usable for a good deal of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Water in the area is soft, and for whites that is a real advantage, because soft water rinses detergent out far more readily than hard water does. The catch is that soft water lathers with very little detergent, so the standard dose is much too much and residue builds up quickly. Grey is detergent and mineral buildup rather than dirt, so the fix is less detergent, smaller loads and an extra rinse, with a strip wash to reverse what is already there. Skip chlorine bleach, which weakens cotton and puts a permanent yellow cast into poly cotton, and use oxygen bleach with warm water and time instead. Empty every pocket, and lift ink with isopropyl alcohol onto a cloth underneath before the coat sees any heat.
