It failed in the washer, at the very end, during the ninety seconds nobody watches. It gets flung out, or it gets evaporated.<\/p>\n<p>Flinging is nearly free. The drum is already turning and the water goes down the drain in seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Evaporating is expensive. Every drop the spin leaves behind has to be turned into vapor with heat, and that takes both time and energy.<\/p>\n<p>So the spin cycle does the cheap part of the drying, and the dryer does the expensive part.<\/p>\n<p>A spin that ends early or runs slow hands more of the job to the dryer, which is why a load in front of you seems to take forever for no obvious reason.<\/p>\n<h2>What rpm actually means in practice<\/h2>\n<p>Spin speed is rated in revolutions per minute, and the number describes how hard water is being pushed out through the fabric and the drum perforations.<\/p>\n<p>The force involved rises with the square of the speed. Doubling the rpm roughly quadruples the force at the drum wall, which is why the gap between settings is larger than the numbers look.<\/p>\n<p>Laundry people talk about residual moisture, meaning how much water is left in a load compared with its own dry weight.<\/p>\n<p>A slow final spin around 600 rpm can leave cotton carrying close to its dry weight again in water. A fast one in the 1200 range typically brings that down to roughly half.<\/p>\n<p>In dryer terms that is not a small saving. Halving the water in a load roughly halves the time and the energy needed to drive that water off.<\/p>\n<p>None of this requires knowing the exact rating of a given machine. Picking the highest spin the fabric will tolerate gets you most of the benefit.<\/p>\n<h2>Why bedding holds far more water than clothing<\/h2>\n<p>A comforter is larger than a shirt and built differently.<\/p>\n<p>There is fill in the middle, and fill is an enormous amount of fiber surface with air spaces between it, and those air spaces fill with water.<\/p>\n<p>Quilting and baffle stitching create closed pockets that hold water in place instead of letting it drain toward the drum wall.<\/p>\n<p>Shell fabric is often tightly woven, which slows water passing back out through it.<\/p>\n<p>A soaked king comforter can weigh several times what it weighs dry, and nearly all of that extra weight is water a good spin would have removed.<\/p>\n<p>That is why a setting that is perfectly fine for jeans is nowhere near enough for bedding.<\/p>\n<h2>The delicate setting is usually why bedding takes forever<\/h2>\n<p>People choose delicate for a comforter in order to protect it, which is a reasonable instinct.<\/p>\n<p>What they get is a low final spin, often half the speed of a normal cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Half the speed is roughly a quarter of the force, and the load comes out sodden.<\/p>\n<p>Then it goes into the dryer for three cycles, and three rounds of tumbling and heat does more damage to a comforter than one fast spin ever would have.<\/p>\n<p>If the item can take a normal spin, the gentler treatment overall is the fast spin followed by a single dryer cycle.<\/p>\n<p>If it genuinely cannot, plan for the drying time rather than being surprised by it.<\/p>\n<h2>Unbalanced loads and the spin cycle that never happens<\/h2>\n<p>This is the failure nobody diagnoses, because the machine does not announce it.<\/p>\n<p>A comforter soaks up water unevenly and tends to gather on one side of the drum as a single heavy mass.<\/p>\n<p>At speed, an off center mass makes a machine shake hard enough to walk across a floor, so the control board watches for it.<\/p>\n<p>When it detects the imbalance, it slows down, adds water back, tumbles to redistribute the load, and tries again.<\/p>\n<p>After a few failed attempts it gives up and ends the cycle at a low speed or at no speed at all.<\/p>\n<p>The door releases, the display says the cycle is finished, and the comforter inside is dripping. Nothing tells you the spin cycle never actually ran.<\/p>\n<p>If a load comes out much heavier than you expected, that is almost always what happened.<\/p>\n<h2>Preventing an unbalanced load<\/h2>\n<p>Load bulky items loosely and spread them around the drum rather than dropping a folded block into one spot.<\/p>\n<p>Never wash a comforter folded or rolled. It stays that way through the wash and behaves like one solid object.<\/p>\n<p>Give it a drum with room. A comforter packed tight cannot redistribute itself, so the machine has nothing to work with when it tries.<\/p>\n<p>Two similar items balance better than one. A comforter with a couple of matched towels often spins clean where the comforter alone will not.<\/p>\n<p>Do not mix one heavy item in with a load of light ones, which is the worst possible arrangement for balance.<\/p>\n<p>If you hear a machine struggling, open it, pull the mass apart, spread it around the drum, and restart the spin.<\/p>\n<h2>When a second spin cycle is worth running<\/h2>\n<p>A drain and spin takes a few minutes and can remove a serious amount of water the first attempt left behind.<\/p>\n<p>Run one any time a load comes out heavier than it should, since that usually means the first spin was aborted partway.<\/p>\n<p>Run one after a delicate cycle if the item can tolerate the speed, because that is where the water is sitting.<\/p>\n<p>Redistribute the load by hand before the second spin. Restarting on the same badly arranged mass produces the same result.<\/p>\n<p>Against an extra half hour of heat, the extra spin is the cheaper and the gentler option nearly every time.<\/p>\n<h2>When a high spin is the wrong call<\/h2>\n<p>Fragile shell fabrics, thin silks, and older textiles can be stressed at high speed, particularly where the fabric is pressed hard against the drum wall under the weight of the load.<\/p>\n<p>Loose fill can migrate and pack against baffle seams under high force, and a seam under that kind of pressure is where a comforter tears.<\/p>\n<p>Anything with a weak seam or a small hole already should not see a fast spin at all until it is repaired.<\/p>\n<p>Wool and heavy knits can distort when pressed hard while they are still wet.<\/p>\n<p>Foam of any kind should never be spun fast, or machine washed at all.<\/p>\n<p>A high spin also sets creases into cotton, which matters more for sheets than for a comforter.<\/p>\n<h2>The Plano part<\/h2>\n<p>Two North Texas conditions turn this from a technicality into something you notice on the clock.<\/p>\n<p>Hot humid summers change the drying math.
