There is a version of this problem where nothing you own is the cause. The clothes are clean, the machine is clean, the detergent is fine, and laundry still comes out smelling faintly of a swimming pool.<\/p>\n

When that happens, the water is doing it.<\/p>\n

Why tap water smells like a pool<\/h2>\n

Municipal water is disinfected, and in most of the country that means chlorine or chloramine. Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia, and utilities use it because it stays stable in the pipes far longer than chlorine alone.<\/p>\n

That stability is the problem for laundry. Free chlorine largely dissipates if water sits out. Chloramine does not. It arrives at your machine at full strength, goes into the drum with your clothes, and a portion of it stays in the fabric.<\/p>\n

The smell is usually strongest in two situations. First thing in the morning, when water has been sitting in the pipes overnight, and in late summer, when utilities often raise disinfectant levels because warm water needs more of it.<\/p>\n

How to tell it is the water<\/h2>\n

Run a glass of cold water from the tap and let it sit for ten minutes, then smell it. If it smells of pool, that is your answer.<\/p>\n

Two more signs point the same way. The smell affects everything equally, including items that were barely worn, and it is present straight out of the washer rather than developing in storage. And it is worse on the first load of the day than on the third.<\/p>\n

If instead the smell only affects some items, or only appears after things have been put away, the water is not the cause and the problem is somewhere else.<\/p>\n

What to do about it<\/h2>\n

Run the tap before you run the machine.<\/strong> Two or three minutes of cold water clears the pipe of whatever has been standing in it. This is the free fix and it handles the morning version of the problem entirely.<\/p>\n

Wash in the afternoon rather than first thing.<\/strong> If the household has been using water all day, the line has already been flushed.<\/p>\n

Add an extra rinse.<\/strong> It sounds counterintuitive to rinse chlorinated water out with more chlorinated water, and it works anyway, because the rinse dilutes what is held in the fabric.<\/p>\n

Half a cup of baking soda in the wash.<\/strong> It neutralises rather than masks, it is cheap, and it also helps with the mineral side of the problem.<\/p>\n

A vitamin C rinse for the stubborn version.<\/strong> Ascorbic acid neutralises both chlorine and chloramine chemically. A quarter teaspoon of powdered vitamin C dissolved in the rinse water handles a full load. Aquarium shops sell dechlorinating drops that do the same thing.<\/p>\n

The permanent fix<\/h2>\n

If this is a constant rather than an occasional annoyance, filter the water going into the machine.<\/p>\n

An inline carbon filter fitted to the washer’s cold supply removes chlorine and, with the right cartridge, chloramine. Standard carbon handles free chlorine easily and struggles with chloramine, so check the cartridge specification against what your utility actually uses, which is published in the annual water quality report.<\/p>\n

A whole-house carbon filter does the same for every tap and costs considerably more.<\/p>\n

What a water softener will not do is remove chlorine. Softeners handle hardness minerals, which is a different problem, and people frequently install one expecting it to fix a chlorine smell.<\/p>\n

What it does to fabric over time<\/h2>\n

This is not only a smell issue, and that is the part worth taking seriously.<\/p>\n

Chlorine is an oxidiser. Over hundreds of washes it weakens cotton fibers, which shows up as thinning and as towels that wear out sooner than they should. It fades dye, particularly on darks, which is part of why black cotton goes grey faster in some households than others.<\/p>\n

And it degrades elastane. Anything with stretch, meaning leggings, activewear, swimwear, and the waistband of nearly everything else, loses its recovery faster in chlorinated water. If your stretch items go slack sooner than seems reasonable, this is a plausible cause.<\/p>\n

The Carmichael part<\/h2>\n

Water here comes largely from the American River and from groundwater, and the balance between the two shifts through the year. That is why the taste and smell of the tap changes seasonally in this area, and it is also why the laundry version of the problem is not constant.<\/p>\n

Late summer is when it is most noticeable. Warm source water needs more disinfectant to stay safe through the distribution system, so levels run higher in August and September than in February. If you notice this problem appearing every year around the same time and then going away, that is the reason, and nothing is wrong with your machine.<\/p>\n

Hot, dry summers here also mean a lot of households are running loads early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day, which is exactly the worst time for standing water in the pipes. Running the tap for two minutes first is a small change that makes a real difference in those months.<\/p>\n

When the load needs a proper rinse<\/h2>\n

The common thread in every fix above is rinsing, and rinsing takes water volume. A small high-efficiency machine is built to use as little water as possible, which is exactly the wrong characteristic for this particular problem.<\/p>\n

If clean laundry smells faintly of a pool, test the tap: run a glass of cold water, let it sit ten minutes, and smell it. Municipal chloramine does not dissipate the way chlorine does, so it arrives at your machine intact. Run the tap two or three minutes before starting a load, wash in the afternoon rather than first thing, add an extra rinse, and use half a cup of baking soda. For the stubborn version, a quarter teaspoon of powdered vitamin C in the rinse neutralises it chemically.
