A great many Inland Empire houses put the washer and dryer in the garage. It is standard in tract housing built from the seventies onward, it keeps the noise out of the house, and it works fine for most of the year.<\/p>\n

Then July arrives, the garage hits a hundred and fifteen in the afternoon, and the laundry room becomes an appliance problem, a detergent problem, and a timing problem all at once.<\/p>\n

Almost nobody adjusts for it. Here is what actually changes.<\/p>\n

Heat is hard on the machines<\/h2>\n

Washers and dryers are rated for indoor use, and an uninsulated garage in a Moreno Valley summer sits well outside that range.<\/p>\n

Rubber and plastic degrade faster.<\/strong> The door gasket on a front-loader, the fill hoses, the drain hose, and the internal seals are all rubber or rubber-like, and sustained heat makes them brittle years earlier than they should. Burst fill hoses are one of the most common causes of household water damage, and heat is what ages them.<\/p>\n

Replace fill hoses every five years if the machine lives in a garage, sooner than the usual guidance. Braided stainless steel over plain rubber.<\/p>\n

Electronics do not love it either.<\/strong> Control boards in modern machines are the expensive part, and heat shortens their life.<\/p>\n

The dryer works harder.<\/strong> A dryer pulls in ambient air, heats it, and exhausts it. That part is fine in heat. The problem is the motor and the belt running in a hot enclosed space with no airflow around the cabinet. Leave clearance around the machine rather than boxing it in with storage.<\/p>\n

Check the dryer vent twice a year rather than once.<\/strong> Garage vent runs are frequently longer and have more turns than an indoor run, and lint plus heat is the combination that causes dryer fires.<\/p>\n

Heat changes how detergent behaves<\/h2>\n

This one surprises people and it is the most immediately visible effect.<\/p>\n

Liquid detergent separates and degrades.<\/strong> The enzymes that do the actual cleaning are proteins, and proteins denature with sustained heat. A jug that has spent a summer at a hundred and ten degrees is meaningfully weaker than a fresh one, and you will notice it as laundry that is not quite getting clean while you assume the machine is at fault.<\/p>\n

Pods are worse.<\/strong> The dissolvable film softens and the pods fuse into a single block. Everyone with a garage laundry room in this climate has opened a tub of welded pods at least once.<\/p>\n

The fix is simple: keep detergent inside the house.<\/strong> A shelf in a hall closet, and carry out what you need. Buy smaller containers more often rather than a warehouse-sized jug that will spend four months cooking.<\/p>\n

Powder detergent handles heat better than liquid if you would rather not carry things back and forth. It clumps with humidity, which is not our problem here.<\/p>\n

Bleach degrades fast in heat and light.<\/strong> Chlorine bleach has a short shelf life to begin with, roughly six months, and a hot garage cuts that down further. If your bleach is not working, it is probably expired rather than diluted.<\/p>\n

The timing problem, which is the real one<\/h2>\n

A wet load left in a washer in a hot garage turns much faster than one left indoors. Warmth accelerates bacterial growth, and a garage in July is an incubator.<\/p>\n

Indoors you have a few hours of grace. In a garage in summer you have well under one before a load starts to smell, and once it does, drying it sets the odor permanently.<\/p>\n

Do not start a load you are not there to move.<\/strong> This is the single most useful habit change. No starting a wash on the way out the door.<\/p>\n

If you do forget, rewash with half a cup of white vinegar in the rinse. If it has been most of a day, soak it first in oxygen bleach dissolved in warm water for several hours, then wash hot. Smell the wet fabric before it goes in the dryer, because heat makes it permanent.<\/p>\n

Run laundry early or late.<\/strong> Morning before the garage heats up, or evening after it has come down. Middle of the afternoon is the worst time for the machines, the detergent, and you.<\/p>\n

What comes out of a hot dryer<\/h2>\n

A dryer in a hot garage runs hotter than the same dryer indoors, because the air it is heating starts warmer.<\/p>\n

That means more heat damage to fabric than the dial suggests. Elastic goes first, which is why fitted sheets stop gripping the mattress and why activewear loses its shape.<\/p>\n

Drop a setting from what you would use indoors, and take things out slightly damp to finish on a rack or on the bed. Over-drying is the leading cause of both fabric wear and static.<\/p>\n

Do not leave a finished load sitting in a hot dryer either. Fabric baking at temperature after the cycle ends sets wrinkles and wears fibers.<\/p>\n

Dust, which comes with the territory<\/h2>\n

A garage is not a sealed room. The door opens, the air is dusty, and everything in there collects a film.<\/p>\n

Wipe the top of the washer before you set clean laundry on it, which everybody does without thinking.<\/p>\n

Keep the washer lid or door closed between loads so dust does not settle into the drum, but open it for an hour after the last load of the day so the gasket can dry. Front-loaders develop mildew in the door seal when it is kept shut wet, and that smell transfers to everything.<\/p>\n

Wipe the gasket dry after use and run an empty hot cycle with vinegar monthly.<\/p>\n

Do not store the clean folded laundry in the garage. Carry it in.<\/p>\n

When the garage machine is not enough<\/h2>\n

Household washers struggle with bulky items regardless of where they live, and a garage machine that has been aging in the heat struggles more. A comforter or a duvet insert packed into a small drum cannot tumble, so water never moves through the fill and the detergent stays in the middle.<\/p>\n

A garage laundry room in this climate ages the machine faster, so replace fill hoses every five years and check the dryer vent twice a year. Keep detergent and bleach inside the house, because heat denatures the enzymes and fuses pods. Never start a load you are not there to move, since a wet load in a hot garage turns in under an hour. Run laundry early or late, drop a dryer setting from what you would use indoors, and leave the washer door open after the last load so the gasket dries.<\/p>\n
