It is a near-perfect environment for the thing people complain about, which is the smell.

Why mats go bad

Sweat carries salt, skin oil, and bacteria straight into a porous surface. Rolling the mat immediately traps all of it against itself with no airflow.

Most mats are closed-cell PVC or TPE, which resist absorption but hold residue on the surface. Open-cell mats, including natural rubber and cork, absorb into the material itself, which is why they grip better when damp and why they are considerably harder to clean.

Knowing which you have decides the method. Drop a small amount of water on the surface: if it beads and sits, it is closed cell. If it soaks in, it is open cell.

The daily habit that does most of the work

Unroll it and let it dry. That is the whole thing.

A mat left rolled after a sweaty session is wet for hours. A mat draped over a chair or hung over a door is dry in twenty minutes. Almost every mat smell problem is a rolling problem.

Wipe it down after use with a cloth and a light spray. Half water, half white vinegar, with a few drops of tea tree oil if you like the smell. Skip commercial mat sprays that are mostly fragrance, since they build up a film that gets slippery.

Never leave it in a car. Heat plus damp plus a sealed space is the fastest way to ruin one.

Deep cleaning

Monthly for regular practice.

Fill a bath with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent. Not hot, which degrades the material, and not much soap, since residue makes a mat slippery and that is a genuine safety problem.

Submerge and work it over gently with a cloth, both sides.

Rinse thoroughly, and then rinse again. Leftover soap is the most common cause of a mat that has become dangerously slick.

Press the water out against the side of the bath. Never wring or twist, which creases the mat permanently.

Hang it over a rail or a shower door until completely dry, which takes longer than you expect and must be finished before it is rolled. A mat rolled at ninety percent dry develops mould inside the roll.

Never a washing machine and never a dryer for most mats. The agitation tears them and heat destroys the surface. A few thin travel mats say machine washable on the label, and only those.

Cork and natural rubber

Cork is naturally antimicrobial and needs very little. Wipe with a damp cloth, no soap, and let it dry. It is genuinely low maintenance.

Natural rubber absorbs and it hates two things: direct sunlight, which degrades it quickly, and citrus or alcohol based cleaners, which break it down. Water and a mild soap only, and dry it in shade.

Neither should soak for long periods.

The rest of the kit

Mat towels and hand towels are the part that actually goes in the wash, and they are worth having, since a towel over the mat takes most of the sweat that would otherwise go into it.

Wash them warm rather than cold, because body oil is the main soil and cold water does not dissolve it. Half a cup of washing soda helps. Never fabric softener, which coats the fibers and destroys the grip that makes a mat towel useful.

Straps, blocks, and bolster covers all get handled and all get skipped. Covers unzip and wash. Foam blocks wipe down.

The bag is the one nobody washes, and it holds a damp mat several times a week. Turn it inside out and wash it monthly.

The Tucson part

The desert climate here is unusually good for this, and it is worth using deliberately.

Low humidity means a mat left unrolled dries in a fraction of the time it takes in a humid city, so the single most important habit is easy here. A mat hung after an evening session is fully dry by morning without any effort.

The heat is the caution. A mat left in a car in a Tucson summer reaches temperatures that soften and warp PVC and degrade natural rubber outright. That is not a slow decline, it is a single afternoon. The mat does not stay in the car.

Sun is the other one. Drying outdoors is tempting and fast, and direct desert sun degrades rubber and fades and embrittles most mat materials quickly. Dry in shade with air moving, which here is still faster than indoors anywhere humid.

Hot studio practice is also common in this area, and a hot session puts several times the sweat into a mat that an ordinary class does. If that is your practice, use a mat towel and move the deep clean to fortnightly.

The towels that pile up

A regular practice generates a mat towel and a hand towel every session, and those want warm water and enough rinse to clear body oil rather than move it around.

The machines at our self-service laundry on East 22nd Street move considerably more water per cycle than a home unit, which is what actually clears oil out of technical towelling.

Our machines and the store are cleaned daily.

Nou wash-dry-fold service covers the rest of the week’s laundry.

The short version

Work out whether your mat is closed cell or open cell by dropping water on it, because the cleaning differs. The habit that solves most smell problems is simply unrolling the mat to dry rather than rolling it damp. Wipe down after each session with half water and half vinegar, and skip fragrance sprays that build a slippery film. Deep clean monthly in lukewarm water with very little soap, rinse twice, never wring, and dry completely before rolling. Never machine wash or tumble dry a mat. And never leave one in a hot car.

WaveMAX Tucson is at 4054 E 22nd St, easy to reach from Tucson and the surrounding area.
