People troubleshoot the smell in their laundry by changing detergent. They try three brands, add vinegar, run a machine clean cycle, and the clothes still come out of the drawer slightly off.<\/p>\n
Very often the problem is not the machine, the detergent, or the clothes. It is the container they sat in for four days before anything happened to them.<\/p>\n
A worn shirt goes into the hamper carrying moisture and body oil. Another goes on top of it. A damp towel joins them. Nothing in that pile has anywhere for its moisture to go, and the middle of the pile stays warm and damp for days.<\/p>\n
That is the condition where odour compounds develop, and it is also the condition where mildew starts on anything cotton. By the time the load reaches the machine it is not lightly worn laundry any more, it is laundry that has been incubating.<\/p>\n
A wash will remove most of it. It will not always remove all of it, and the smell that survives a wash almost always started in the hamper.<\/p>\n
A solid plastic bin with a lid is the worst common choice. No air moves through it, moisture has nowhere to go, and the lid guarantees it.<\/p>\n
A woven basket or a mesh pop-up is much better because air passes through the sides. A canvas bag on a frame is somewhere in between and depends on how open the weave is.<\/p>\n
If you have a lidded bin and do not want to replace it, take the lid off. That one change fixes most of the problem for free.<\/p>\n
Where it sits matters too. A hamper in a bathroom is sitting in the most humid room in the house, taking on shower steam twice a day. A bedroom or a hallway is drier.<\/p>\n
Nothing damp goes in.<\/strong> This is the whole thing in one sentence. Towels, gym kit, and anything worn while sweating get hung until dry, then go in the hamper. Ten minutes over a door handles it.<\/p>\n Separate the wet stuff.<\/strong> A second small open basket for towels and workout clothes keeps the damp items away from the dry ones. It also means those items get washed sooner, which they need anyway.<\/p>\n Do not let it fill.<\/strong> A hamper that reaches the top is a hamper where the bottom third has been sitting for a week. Two smaller hampers emptied often beat one large one emptied rarely.<\/p>\n Wash the hamper.<\/strong> Fabric liners go through the machine. Plastic bins get wiped out with a vinegar solution and dried fully. Almost nobody does either, and a hamper that has held damp clothes for years has its own smell that it passes to everything.<\/p>\n The other reason a hamper causes problems is that everything goes into one, which means sorting happens later, on the floor, in a hurry, and usually not properly.<\/p>\n Three containers rather than one, sorted as you undress, means the sorting is already done. Heavy items in one, everything lighter in another, and damp items in the open basket. It takes no extra time and it removes the step people skip.<\/p>\n It also means you can run a load when one container is full rather than waiting for a single hamper to fill with a mixture that has to be pulled apart first.<\/p>\n The pile on the floor of a laundry room is a hamper without walls, and it behaves the same way. So does the basket of clean laundry that never got folded, sitting next to it, absorbing whatever is in the air of a room that contains a machine full of standing water.<\/p>\n Leave the washer door open between loads. Empty it as soon as it stops. And do not let a clean basket live in there, because clean laundry stored beside damp laundry stops being noticeably clean within a couple of days.<\/p>\n Two seasonal versions of this problem show up here.<\/p>\n Summer is the obvious one. Humid stretches in July and August mean a hamper in an unconditioned room, a basement, or a garage never dries out between deposits, and a week’s worth of clothes at the bottom can go genuinely musty rather than just stale.<\/p>\n Winter is the less obvious one and it catches people out. Cold, dry indoor air feels like it should help, and it does for anything in open air. But a lot of Omaha laundry lives in a basement, and a basement in winter is often the coolest and dampest room in the house even when the rest of it is dry. A hamper down there is in a different climate from the one you are standing in upstairs.<\/p>\n If your hamper lives in a basement, that is worth checking before you buy another detergent.<\/p>\n A hamper that has been left for a week is not one load. Air needs to move through the container, so a woven or mesh hamper beats a lidded plastic bin, and taking the lid off a bin you already own fixes most of it.
