<\/p>\n
A stuffed toy that comes out of the wash matted, lumpy, and hard is the usual outcome, and it is why a lot of people stop washing them. The matting is not inevitable. It comes from two specific things, and both are fixable.<\/p>\n
A plush toy has two separate parts, and the wash damages each differently.<\/p>\n
The outer fabric is usually a polyester pile, meaning short fibres standing up from a backing, the same construction as fleece or velvet. Those fibres tangle around each other under agitation and heat, and once tangled they stay tangled. That is the matting.<\/p>\n
The filling is loose polyester fibre. When it gets wet it clumps, and if it dries clumped, the toy stays lumpy. Filling also holds water long after the outside feels dry, which is why toys go musty in the middle.<\/p>\n
So the two goals are keeping the pile from tangling and keeping the filling from setting in clumps.<\/p>\n
Some toys should never be immersed, and finding out afterwards is expensive.<\/p>\n
Look for a battery compartment or a sound box. Anything electronic must be spot cleaned only, unless the unit is removable through an opening.<\/p>\n
Check for glued-on features. Older toys often have glued eyes, noses, and appliqu\u00e9, and glue fails in warm water.<\/p>\n
Check the seams by pulling gently. A seam that is already opening will open further, and loose filling in a machine is a real mess.<\/p>\n
Foam bead filling behaves differently from fibre filling and does not survive a machine spin well.<\/p>\n
Antique toys, anything with sawdust or straw filling, and anything with a mohair or wool pile should be surface cleaned only.<\/p>\n
Most of what is on a plush toy is on the outside.<\/p>\n
Mix a little gentle detergent into cool water and whisk it until you have foam. Use only the foam, not the water, on a cloth.<\/p>\n
Work over the surface in the direction the pile lies rather than in circles.<\/p>\n
Wipe with a clean damp cloth to lift the detergent, then blot dry with a towel.<\/p>\n
Brush the pile back up with a soft brush while it is damp.<\/p>\n
This gets a toy visibly clean without any of the risks, and it is the right approach for anything sentimental.<\/p>\n
For a sturdy modern toy with no electronics.<\/p>\n
Put it in a pillowcase tied closed, or a mesh laundry bag. This is the step that prevents most of the damage, because it stops the toy tumbling freely against the drum.<\/p>\n
Cold water. Warm water is what tangles a polyester pile.<\/p>\n
Gentle or delicate cycle, and a low spin. A high spin drives the filling into a compacted mass at one end.<\/p>\n
A small amount of mild detergent. Toys hold detergent stubbornly and residue is what makes them feel crunchy.<\/p>\n
Add an extra rinse.<\/p>\n
Wash toys with towels or other soft items rather than alone, so the drum stays balanced and the toy is cushioned.<\/p>\n
Fill a basin with cool water and a little gentle detergent.<\/p>\n
Submerge and squeeze the toy repeatedly rather than rubbing it. Squeezing moves water through the filling, which is what actually cleans it.<\/p>\n
Rinse by squeezing in clean water several times over, until no suds appear. Detergent trapped in filling is difficult to shift and it is the main cause of a toy that feels stiff afterwards.<\/p>\n
Press between towels to remove as much water as you can, and roll it in a dry towel and press again.<\/p>\n
This is the part that determines whether it comes out soft or hard.<\/p>\n
Air dry rather than tumble dry where you can. A dryer on any real heat melts and mats a polyester pile permanently.<\/p>\n
If you use a dryer, air fluff with no heat at all, with the toy still in its pillowcase, and add a couple of clean dry towels to cushion it.<\/p>\n
While it dries, reshape it with your hands every hour or so. Squeeze and knead the filling to break up clumps before they set. This is the single most useful step and it is the one people skip.<\/p>\n
Brush the pile with a soft brush while damp and again once dry, going in the direction the fibres lie. A matted toy that has been brushed damp comes back remarkably well.<\/p>\n
Dry it thoroughly and then give it longer. Filling holds moisture in the core well after the outside feels dry, and a toy put away slightly damp develops mildew inside where nothing can reach it.<\/p>\n
Expect a day or two for a large toy.<\/p>\n
Do not assume it is finished.<\/p>\n
Dampen the pile lightly with a spray of cool water, then brush it out with a soft brush or a pet slicker brush used gently, working in small sections in the direction of the pile.<\/p>\n
Let it dry and brush again.<\/p>\n
Most matting from a single bad wash comes out this way. Matting from repeated hot washes is usually permanent, because the fibres have partly melted together.<\/p>\n
A weekly tumble in a dryer on air fluff with no heat, in a pillowcase, removes dust and freshens a toy without any water at all.<\/p>\n
Bicarbonate of soda sprinkled on, left for fifteen minutes, and vacuumed off with an upholstery attachment deodorises effectively and dries nothing out.<\/p>\n
Sunlight and fresh air for a few hours handles most odour without touching the fabric, though prolonged direct sun fades colours.<\/p>\n
The climate here works against the drying step, which is the step that matters most.<\/p>\n
Michigan winters mean months of indoor air, closed houses, and forced-air heating, and a large plush toy hung indoors in that environment can take two full days to dry through. The risk is not the drying time itself but the temptation to shorten it by putting the toy on a radiator or a heat vent, which mats the pile and can scorch synthetic fibre. Give it the time instead, with a fan on it, which does far more than heat does.<\/p>\n
Summer humidity here is the other half of the same problem. Damp warm air slows evaporation, and a toy that stays damp for three days in a humid July develops a musty core smell that is much harder to remove than whatever you washed out.<\/p>\n
The practical answer in both seasons is the same, which is airflow. A fan pointed at a drying toy shortens the process more safely than any amount of heat, and it is the difference between a toy that dries and one that sours.<\/p>\n
Getting a large toy properly dry needs a drum with room for it to tumble freely on no heat for a long stretch, which is exactly what a small domestic dryer cannot provide.<\/p>\n
