<\/figure>\nWhat hard water actually is<\/h2>\n
Hardness is a measure of dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up as water moves through rock and soil on its way to the tap.<\/p>\n
It gets expressed in grains per gallon. Anything above about seven counts as hard, and supply in the inland valleys of southern California sits well above that.<\/p>\n
The minerals are invisible in a glass and cause no trouble anywhere in the house except the kettle, the shower screen and the washing machine.<\/p>\n
You can see the chemistry on that shower screen without any equipment. The white scale is mineral coming out of solution and staying where it landed.<\/p>\n
The same thing happens in a load of washing, except it happens down inside the yarn where nothing can wipe it off.<\/p>\n
What minerals do to detergent<\/h2>\n
Detergent works because each molecule grabs oily soil at one end and holds on to water at the other.<\/p>\n
Calcium and magnesium bind to the water loving end first, before the detergent ever gets near any soil.<\/p>\n
What forms is an insoluble compound, the same thing that used to be called soap curd. It is no longer detergent. It cannot clean anything and it will not dissolve.<\/p>\n
It comes out of solution as fine particles that settle into cloth during the wash and stay put through the rinse.<\/p>\n
So a share of every dose is converted into deposit instead of doing any cleaning at all. In very hard water that share is large.<\/p>\n
It is also why the wash produces so little foam. The mineral is consuming the surfactant before it has a chance to work.<\/p>\n
Why the deposit holds smell<\/h2>\n
The deposit is not smooth. Under magnification it is a rough crystalline layer sitting on and between the fibers.<\/p>\n
That roughness gives it an enormous amount of surface area, and it grips oily soil that would otherwise have rinsed away.<\/p>\n
So it does two jobs at once. It catches new soil as that arrives, and it holds whatever is already present against removal, and both of those work against any attempt to prevent laundry odors.<\/p>\n
The smell you notice comes out of the trapped oil rather than out of the mineral. Calcium has no odor of its own.<\/p>\n
The deposit is simply the structure that keeps the odorous material in the garment through wash after wash after wash.<\/p>\n
It explains the stiffness at the same time. Towels that have gone scratchy and thin feeling are full of it, and stiffness and smell turn up together because they share one cause.<\/p>\n
Why more detergent makes it worse<\/h2>\n
The instinctive response to washing that comes out smelling is to add another scoop. In hard water that makes the situation worse in two separate ways.<\/p>\n
The first part of the dose gets consumed by mineral and becomes deposit. Adding more does not change that, it simply produces more deposit.<\/p>\n
The surplus that is not consumed then has to rinse out, and the same hard water rinses poorly.<\/p>\n
What you are left with is a layer of unrinsed detergent sitting on top of a layer of mineral compound, and both of them hold on to soil.<\/p>\n
Two or three rounds of that and a garment carries a coating no ordinary wash will remove.<\/p>\n
The way to prevent laundry odors in hard water is to deal with the mineral before it ever reaches the detergent, rather than trying to overwhelm it with quantity.<\/p>\n
Telling deposit from ordinary residue<\/h2>\n
The two kinds of buildup feel different and respond to different treatments, so telling them apart is the first practical step toward anything that will prevent laundry odors.<\/p>\n
Mineral deposit feels stiff, slightly gritty and dry. Cloth looks dull and whites go gray rather than yellow.<\/p>\n
Detergent and softener residue feels slick or waxy when wet, and it stops a towel absorbing water properly.<\/p>\n
A quick check: wet a corner of a towel and rub it between your fingers. Slippery means residue. Rough and dry means mineral.<\/p>\n
Most washing in a hard water area carries both, in layers, which is why a single treatment so often only half works.<\/p>\n
The order matters. An acid treatment for the mineral first, then a hot alkaline wash for the oily half, gets further than either one on its own.<\/p>\n

Acid dissolves mineral deposit. That is the entire principle and everything practical follows from it.<\/p>\n
A cup of white vinegar in the rinse compartment on a warm cycle will lift a light deposit. It is mild, cheap and slow.<\/p>\n
Citric acid is stronger and faster. A few tablespoons dissolved in warm water, used as an hour long soak, handles a heavy deposit in towels.<\/p>\n
Follow either one with a normal hot wash using a small amount of detergent and no softener, which takes out the oily material the mineral had been holding. That second step is what does the work to prevent laundry odors, since the mineral itself never smelled of anything.<\/p>\n
Never combine an acid with chlorine bleach in the same water. Run them as separate cycles if you use both at all.<\/p>\n
Expect to repeat the process. A deposit laid down over two years does not come out in one afternoon, and towels usually want two or three rounds before they feel right again.<\/p>\n
Softening the water to prevent laundry odors at the source<\/h2>\n
Removing deposit is repair work. Stopping the next layer forming is the part that lasts.<\/p>\n
A detergent booster, washing soda or a commercial softening agent, added to the wash locks up calcium and magnesium before they can reach the detergent.<\/p>\n
Half a cup of washing soda in a full load is the usual dose, and it lets you cut the detergent rather than increase it.<\/p>\n
Powdered detergents generally cope with hard water better than liquids, because they are formulated with builders that already do this job.<\/p>\n
A whole house softener solves it at the source and is the only complete answer, though it is a plumbing decision rather than a laundry one.<\/p>\n
Fabric softener is the one thing to drop entirely. It leaves a coating, the coating binds mineral and oil together, and in hard water it speeds the whole problem up.<\/p>\n
Keeping cloth clear once it is clear<\/h2>\n
Once fabric has been stripped back, keeping it that way takes very little effort.<\/p>\n
Use the smallest detergent dose that cleans, with a booster making up the difference. Dose is the single biggest control you hold.<\/p>\n
Add a rinse. Hard water rinses badly and a second pass carries off what the first one left sitting there.<\/p>\n
Wash towels hot and on their own, since they carry the most deposit and they gain the most from the temperature.<\/p>\n
Run a vinegar rinse through the towels once a month instead of waiting until they feel stiff enough to notice.<\/p>\n
Staying ahead of the deposit is far less work than removing it, and it is the most durable way to prevent laundry odors anywhere the supply is hard.<\/p>\n
The Moreno Valley part<\/h2>\n
Inland southern California supplies both of the conditions this problem needs, and they work on each other, so what it takes to prevent laundry odors here is different from what would work in a wetter place.<\/p>\n
The supply is hard. Water in the inland valleys carries a heavy mineral load, and every wash run without a booster puts a fresh layer of calcium and magnesium compound into the cloth.
