It keeps the surfactants, which are the molecules that lift oil away from fibre and hold it in suspension.<\/p>\n
It usually keeps the enzymes, which break down protein, starch and fat, and enzymes are the part of the formula that removes the source of a smell rather than covering it over.<\/p>\n
It often keeps optical brighteners, which are dyes that fluoresce faintly blue in daylight to make white cotton look whiter. Some products drop them, most do not, and the label rarely says either way.<\/p>\n
It keeps preservatives, because a water based liquid without them grows things in the bottle before you finish it.<\/p>\n
So free and clear is not a weaker detergent. It is the same detergent with the marketing scent taken out, which is why nothing about cleaning power changes when you switch.<\/p>\n
Reactive skin is usually reacting to what stayed behind<\/h2>\n
Fragrance takes the blame for most laundry related skin trouble, and it does earn a share of it.<\/p>\n
But a large part of the itching, the patches at the waistband and the redness behind the knees comes from detergent that never rinsed out.<\/p>\n
Residue sits against skin all day under pressure from waistbands, cuffs, collars and seams, which is precisely the map of where people report the problem.<\/p>\n
Sweat rewets that residue during the day, putting surfactant back into solution against warm skin for hours at a time.<\/p>\n
