Something smells, so you pour in more detergent. It is the most natural reaction in laundry and it is the wrong one. Excess detergent is one of the commonest reasons a load smells at all, which means people trying to prevent laundry odors frequently double the exact dose that is producing them.

Why adding more makes it worse
Detergent works by holding soil in suspension in the wash water so the rinse can carry it away. That is the entire mechanism.
The amount needed is decided by how much soil is in the load and how hard the water is. It is not decided by how bad the load smells.
Past the point where the water is carrying all the soil it can, extra detergent has nothing left to attach to and does no further work.
What it does instead is make suds. Suds cushion a tumbling load, and a cushioned load moves against itself less, so it comes out mechanically less clean than a properly dosed one.
The surplus also has to be rinsed away, and a rinse is a fixed quantity of water. Double the dose and the same rinse leaves roughly half of it in the load.
So the reaction to a smell adds material that cannot rinse, in a load that is now washing less effectively than before. Neither of those changes helps you prevent laundry odors.
What refuses to rinse then stays in the fibre
Detergent left behind does not evaporate the way water does. It dries into the fibre as a thin film.
On a towel you feel it as stiffness and a loss of absorbency. Water beads on the surface instead of soaking in.
On clothing it reads as a dull grey cast across whites and a papery hand on cotton.
That film is not inert. It is mostly surfactant, and in most products it also carries fragrance and polymers, and all of it is slightly tacky.
Fabric with a tacky film on it picks up skin oil faster than clean fabric and grips it harder once it has it.
That is the loop people get stuck in. Residue catches soil, soil smells, the smell prompts a bigger dose, and the residue thickens again. Once that loop is running, no dose of anything will prevent laundry odors on its own.
How residue turns into a smell
Clean fibre with nothing in it has very little to smell of. Whatever you are picking up is something the fabric is carrying. If you want to prevent laundry odors, that is the material you are trying to get out.
Skin oil is the main one. It transfers from the body every time a garment is worn, and it is the hardest thing in a wash to shift, because oil does not dissolve in water.
Detergent residue holds oil against the fibre rather than releasing it, so an overdosed load traps the exact material the wash was meant to remove.
Oil sitting in fabric oxidises over the following weeks. That is the faintly rancid edge on a shirt that came out of the machine smelling fine and smells wrong later on the rail.
Fragrance in the residue sits over the top of it and covers it for a while, which is why the problem usually gets noticed late.
Then add body heat or a hot car, and the whole thing lifts off the fabric at once.
Telling whether a load is overdosed
Open the machine during the final rinse and look at the water. Suds at that stage mean the dose was too high, with no ambiguity about it. That one check tells you more about how to prevent laundry odors than any label does.
Wet a clean dry towel from the load under a tap and rub it between your fingers. A slippery feel means detergent is still in there.
Fill a sink with warm water and drop a clean item in. Cloudy water or a rim of foam is residue coming back out.
Stiff towels that have stopped absorbing are the clearest sign of all, and softener gets blamed for that far more often than detergent does.
Whites that have gone grey rather than yellow are usually residue rather than dye transfer from something in the load.
Any of these on their own is worth acting on. Two of them together settles it.
Working out a dose that will prevent laundry odors
Start from the lower line inside the cap rather than filling it, since the cap is sized for the largest load on the hardest water.
The dose printed on the bottle assumes a packed drum, heavy soil and hard water all at the same time. Most household loads are none of those three.
For an ordinary lightly soiled load, two tablespoons of a concentrated liquid is usually plenty, and a high efficiency machine often wants less again.
Scale up for real dirt and for a genuinely full drum. Do not scale up for smell, which is the habit this whole article is about breaking.
Powder needs water warm enough to dissolve it. Undissolved powder in a cold wash is residue before the cycle has even finished filling.
Measure it once with a spoon so you know what the correct amount looks like in the cap, then use that mark from then on. A measured dose is the least interesting way to prevent laundry odors and the most effective one.
Stripping build up out of fabric that already has it
Stripping is a one off correction rather than a routine. Done repeatedly it wears fabric out.
Fill a bath or a large sink with the hottest water the items will tolerate.
Add washing soda and borax, roughly a quarter cup of each for a full tub, and stir until both have dissolved before any fabric goes in.
Put in clean, already washed items only. Stripping a dirty load achieves nothing and makes a mess of the water for no reason.
Leave it four to six hours and stir occasionally. The water turning grey or brown is the point of the exercise.
Then run everything through a full wash cycle with no detergent whatsoever, followed by an extra rinse.
Towels and athletic clothing are the usual candidates. Leave wool, silk and anything with elastic you care about out of it.
Softener and sheets are a second layer on top
Fabric softener works by depositing a thin waxy coating on the fibre. That is the design, not a side effect of it.
The coating settles over whatever detergent residue is already present and seals it in place.
On towels and athletic fabric it is the main reason they stop absorbing and start holding a smell between washes.
Dryer sheets do the same job with heat instead of water, and they leave their coating in the dryer drum as well.
White vinegar in the rinse gives you the soft feel without any coating, and it lifts residue rather than adding to it.
Stop both for a month on whatever is giving you trouble and see how much of the problem goes away on its own. A month without either is a fair test of whether they were helping you prevent laundry odors or quietly causing them.
The Tempe part
Water here is hard, and hardness is the biggest reason people end up overdosing detergent without ever deciding to.
Minerals in the supply bind with detergent before it reaches the fabric, so a share of every pour is consumed before it does any cleaning. People compensate by adding more, which works up to a point and then quietly stops working and starts leaving a deposit instead.
The tidier answer is to deal with the hardness itself. Half a cup of washing soda in the wash water softens it, and a normal pour of detergent then behaves like a normal pour rather than a partial one.
Desert dust is the other factor here and it needs the opposite treatment, because it is fine and gritty rather than greasy. Dust leaves fabric through water volume and agitation, not through more chemistry, so a load carrying yard dust and a load carrying gym sweat want completely different handling. Dry heat helps in one respect: clothes dry fast in this climate, so damp is rarely the culprit and a dosing problem is the first thing worth ruling out.
Where a rinse has enough water behind it
Residue is a rinsing problem before it is anything else, and rinsing is decided by how much water passes through the load.

The short version
Pouring in more detergent because something smells is the commonest way to make it smell worse. Detergent only works while there is soil left for it to hold, and the surplus cannot rinse away in a fixed volume of rinse water. It dries into the fibre as a slightly tacky film that catches skin oil and grips it, and oil sitting in fabric is what you are actually smelling. Watch for suds in the final rinse, stiff towels and a slippery feel when wet. Dose from the lower line rather than the full cap, add washing soda for hard water instead of a bigger pour, and strip existing build up once in a hot soak. Getting the dose right is most of what it takes to prevent laundry odors.
