Bamboo, Tencel, and modal all get sold as natural fabrics and none of them quite is. All three are wood pulp dissolved in chemicals and extruded as fibre, which puts them in a category of their own, and it explains why they feel wonderful and fall apart when treated like cotton.

What these fabrics actually are
All three belong to a family called regenerated cellulose, meaning plant cellulose broken down chemically and reformed into fibre.
Viscose rayon is the original and the most common. Cellulose is dissolved, extruded through fine holes, and set into filament.
Modal is a modified viscose process that produces a stronger fibre, particularly when wet, which is why modal underwear and t-shirts hold up better than plain viscose.
Lyocell, sold under the brand name Tencel, uses a different solvent in a closed loop process. It is the strongest of the three, the most wet stable, and the most environmentally straightforward.
Bamboo fabric is almost always bamboo viscose, meaning bamboo pulp put through the viscose process. It behaves like viscose because chemically that is what it is. Genuine mechanically processed bamboo linen exists and is rare, expensive, and feels closer to linen than to silk.
So when a label says bamboo, read it as viscose unless it explicitly says otherwise.
Why they feel so good and behave so badly
The fibre is smooth and round in cross section, which is why these fabrics feel cool and slippery against skin in a way cotton does not.
They are highly absorbent, taking up considerably more moisture than cotton, which is why they feel cooling and why they are popular for warm weather bedding and clothing.
And that absorbency is the problem. When the fibre takes up water it swells, and a swollen regenerated cellulose fibre loses much of its strength.
Viscose can lose roughly half its tensile strength when wet. Modal loses less. Lyocell loses least.
That single property explains every rule that follows. A wet viscose garment handled like a wet cotton one tears, stretches permanently, or comes out a size smaller.
Washing them
Cold water, always. Warm water accelerates both shrinkage and fibre swelling.
Gentle cycle, low spin. High spin speed is where wet viscose gets stretched and distorted.
Use a mesh bag for anything light, which stops the garment being pulled against the drum and other items.
Mild detergent, small dose, and no enzyme heavy formulations on blends containing protein fibres.
Never chlorine bleach, which degrades cellulose outright.
Skip fabric softener. These fabrics are already smooth and softener just adds a residue that reduces the absorbency you paid for.
Wash with similar weights. A bamboo t-shirt in a load with jeans will lose.
Handling them wet
This is where most damage happens and it happens in about four seconds.
Never wring. Wringing wet viscose stretches it permanently and can tear it along the twist.
Never hang a heavy wet garment. The weight of the water pulls the fibre and the garment comes out longer than it went in, permanently.
Press the water out between two towels instead, or roll the garment in a towel and press.
Support the whole garment when lifting it out of the machine rather than pulling it by a sleeve or a hem.
Reshape it while damp, since these fabrics take whatever shape they dry in.
Drying
Air dry flat wherever possible. Flat is the answer for anything knitted or heavy.
Light woven items can be hung once most of the water has been pressed out, on a padded hanger rather than a wire one.
Tumble drying is possible on low for lyocell and modal, and it is where plain viscose and bamboo viscose shrink. If you use a dryer, use the lowest setting and take the garment out damp.
Dry away from direct heat and direct sun. Sun weakens the fibre as well as fading colour.
Expect some shrinkage on the first wash regardless, particularly with bamboo viscose, and buy accordingly.
Pressing and pilling
Iron on low, on the reverse side, while the garment is still slightly damp. These fabrics scorch easily and a scorch mark is permanent.
Steam rather than press wherever you can.
Pilling is common on bamboo viscose jersey, because the short fibres work loose with abrasion. Washing inside out, in a mesh bag, on gentle, is what slows it.
Remove pills with a fabric shaver rather than pulling them off by hand, since pulling takes fibre with it and makes the next round worse.
Lyocell resists pilling considerably better than the others, which is one of the reasons it costs more.
Buying decisions worth knowing
For anything you want to last, lyocell over modal over viscose, in that order.
For bedding, a lyocell or lyocell blend sheet handles washing far better than bamboo viscose and stays cool just as well.
Blends can be the sensible choice. Cotton mixed with modal or lyocell gets much of the softness with more of cotton’s durability and easier care.
Be sceptical of environmental claims on bamboo viscose specifically. The plant grows sustainably and the conversion into fibre is a chemical process, and only closed loop lyocell production reliably contains its solvents.
Check the label for the actual fibre name rather than the marketing name.
The Tempe part
These fabrics are genuinely well suited to this climate and two local factors decide whether they survive it.
The heat is why they are worth owning here. High absorbency and a smooth cool hand make lyocell and modal excellent for warm weather clothing and for bedding in a climate where summer nights stay hot. They move moisture away from skin faster than cotton, which is exactly what you want in this valley from May through September.
The dry air is the compensating advantage on care. Flat drying, which is the correct method and the one people avoid because it takes too long, is fast here. A garment laid flat indoors dries in hours rather than a day, which removes most of the temptation to hang it wet or put it in a dryer, and those two shortcuts are what ruin these fabrics.
Ultraviolet intensity is the warning. Regenerated cellulose degrades under sunlight faster than cotton does, losing strength as well as colour, so drying these fabrics on a line in direct sun does real structural damage rather than just fading them. Dry them in shade or indoors, which in this climate costs you almost no extra time.
Hard water is the fourth factor and it works against the absorbency. Mineral deposit coats the fibre and reduces how much moisture it can take up, which removes the cooling property that made the fabric worth buying. Half a cup of washing soda handles it.
Where a gentle cold load still rinses
These fabrics need cold water, a gentle cycle, and a low spin, and that combination cleans poorly unless there is real water volume moving through the load.
