The shirt smelled fine in the closet. Twenty minutes after you put it on, in the car or halfway through a meeting, it does not. That gap is the whole puzzle, and closing it is how you prevent laundry odors that keep coming back on clothes you are certain you washed.

Why a cold garment tells you nothing
Smell requires a substance to leave the fabric and reach your nose. A compound sitting in a yarn at room temperature may not be doing that at all.
Sniffing a folded shirt in a cool closet is the least informative test available. The garment is cold, still, and pressed flat against everything next to it.
Nothing is moving air through it and nothing is warming it. You are smelling the outside of the fold and very little else.
This is why people are genuinely surprised. They checked, it was fine, and an hour later it is not.
The garment did not change. The conditions did, and that gap is why so many honest attempts to prevent laundry odors fail on a shirt that was already washed.
What survives a wash without smelling
Two things get left behind by a wash that was almost but not quite enough, and both of them defeat an honest effort to prevent laundry odors because neither one announces itself while dry and cool.
The first is old soil, mostly skin oil, that the wash loosened but never carried away. It sits down in the yarn rather than on the surface.
The second is detergent and softener residue, which is sticky by design and holds that oil in place instead of letting it rinse.
Both are effectively odorless in a cold, dry, still state. They are also completely ready to become noticeable.
What they need is energy. Warmth and moisture supply it, and your body supplies both.
Body heat is the trigger
Skin against fabric holds a garment at body temperature for as long as you wear it, and that is a large change from a closet.
Warmth raises the vapour pressure of whatever is sitting in the yarn. More of it leaves the fabric and reaches the air around you.
You then add fresh perspiration, which is water, and water re-wets the old residue that had been sitting inert.
Re-wetted residue lets go of everything it had been holding. This is why the smell often arrives as a wave rather than gradually.
The area under the arms and along the collar reaches temperature first and stays wettest, which is why that is where you notice it.
The twenty minute delay people describe is roughly the time a garment takes to reach skin temperature all the way through its thickness.
Humid air does the same thing without you
You do not have to wear something for this to happen. Moisture on its own is enough, which is why humid air can undo a wash that looked like it had done enough to prevent laundry odors.
A shirt hanging in a humid room takes on water from the air, and the residue in it re-wets exactly as it would against skin.
This is why a closet on an outside wall, or a shut wardrobe in a warm month, can produce a smell in clothes that were put away clean.
It is also why the smell inside a car in summer is so obvious. The interior gets very hot and the upholstery and the clothing release everything at once.
Ironing does the same thing and does it dramatically. Steam plus heat on a shirt with residue in it produces a smell most people recognize immediately.
If a shirt smells under an iron, it was never clean. The iron only made the situation visible.
How to test a garment properly
There is a reliable test and it takes about a minute.
Take the garment somewhere warm, hold the underarm or the collar inside a closed hand for thirty seconds, then smell it straight away.
Your hand supplies both the heat and a little moisture, which is the same combination that wearing it supplies.
The alternative is a steam iron held just above the fabric, or a brief run in a warm dryer, then smelling it while it is still hot.
Do this before folding a load away rather than after. A garment that fails here will fail again on your back in a week.
Testing this way is the single habit that does most to prevent laundry odors, because it catches the problem while the load is still in front of you.
What a rewash actually has to remove
A garment that fails the test needs a different wash rather than another run of the same one, and the things that make the difference are temperature, time and rinsing.
Warmer water. Skin oil is the substance you are trying to shift, and oil does not release at cold temperatures in any useful quantity.
More time. A long cycle, or a soak of half an hour before the wash, lets detergent work into the yarn rather than wash over it.
Less detergent, which sounds backwards. A heavy dose in a small volume of water rinses out badly and leaves more residue than it takes away.
More rinsing. An extra rinse is the step people skip and it is the one that carries dissolved soil out of the fabric instead of back into it, which makes it the cheapest way to prevent laundry odors on a garment that keeps failing.
A smaller load. Fabric needs room to move for water to pass through it, and a packed drum simply reshuffles the same soil between the same garments.
No softener on anything with this problem. Softener is a coating, and a coating laid over old soil holds it exactly where it is.
Where the residue sits on a garment
It is not spread evenly, and knowing where it gathers tells you what to treat.
Underarms take the most, because that is where fabric is warmest, wettest and pressed against skin all day long.
Collars and the insides of cuffs take the next share, from a mix of skin oil and whatever gets used on hair and face.
The small of the back holds it in anything worn under a bag strap, and the same goes for the line where a belt sits.
Synthetic panels in a mixed garment hold more than the cotton beside them, which is why a shirt can smell in the mesh under the arm and nowhere else.
Working a little detergent into those dry areas with a finger before the wash does more to prevent laundry odors than any amount tipped into the drum.
A routine that will prevent laundry odors from returning
Once a garment is genuinely clean, keeping it that way is mostly about not recreating the conditions.
Do not put anything away warm. A garment that comes out of a dryer and goes straight into a drawer takes its heat and its moisture into a closed space.
Hang worn clothes to air instead of dropping them into a shut hamper. A worn shirt in a basket stays damp and the residue in it never dries out.
Give a closet some air. Clothes packed edge to edge never dry between wears, and loosening them alone will prevent laundry odors from settling in.
Wash the problem garments more often than they look like they need. Residue accumulates over wears, and the wear where it becomes noticeable is not the wear that caused it.
Dry things fully. A garment that is even slightly damp when it is put away has already started the whole process over again.
The Plano part
The complaint this article describes is more common here than in a dry climate, and the reason is the air rather than anything you are doing wrong.
Summers in this part of North Texas are long, hot and heavy with moisture. A shirt that leaves a cool house and reaches a parking lot is warmed and re-wetted inside a minute, which is precisely the combination that pulls smell out of residue. The same shirt in a dry climate might never announce itself at all.
The gap between a chilled indoor room and the air outside sharpens the effect further. Fabric that has been sitting at conditioned temperature meets much warmer, wetter air the moment you step out, and a garment can go from unnoticeable to obvious in the length of a walk to the car.
Local water carries a heavy mineral load, which matters here because it makes residue harder to rinse away. Mineral binds with detergent inside the fabric and leaves behind a layer that ordinary rinsing does not carry off, so the film holding old soil is thicker than it would be elsewhere. An extra rinse is worth more here than an extra scoop.
Where a rewash gets the water it needs
A garment that keeps warming up and turning needs volume and a real rinse rather than another pass through the same small drum.
