Baking soda and washing soda sit next to each other on the shelf, look identical in the box, and get swapped for one another constantly. They are two different chemicals with two different jobs, and only one of them does much about laundry odors. Knowing which is which changes what your wash can actually achieve.

Two names, two chemicals
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Washing soda is sodium carbonate. One atom of difference in the formula, and a large difference in behaviour.
The gap shows up in alkalinity. A baking soda solution sits around pH 8, which is barely above neutral. A washing soda solution sits around pH 11, which is strongly alkaline.
That is not a small step, because pH runs on a logarithmic scale. Washing soda is hundreds of times more alkaline than baking soda in solution.
Alkalinity is what matters in a wash. It is what loosens grease and oil from fibre, and oil left in fibre is behind most laundry odors that survive a cycle.
You can make washing soda from baking soda by baking it in a low oven for an hour, which drives off water and carbon dioxide. That is the actual chemical relationship between them.
Washing soda is caustic enough to irritate skin, so wear gloves with it. Baking soda is not, which tells you plainly that these are not interchangeable.
What baking soda actually does
It is mostly an absorber and a very mild booster, and calling it a cleaner oversells it.
Its real strength is neutralising acidic smells. Sour and stale smells in fabric are frequently acidic compounds, and a mild base reacts with them and takes the edge off.
That is genuinely useful and it is also limited, because neutralising laundry odors is not the same as removing what is producing them.
It raises the pH of the wash water slightly, which helps detergent work a little better in very soft water. In hard water the effect disappears into the mineral load.
It is a mild abrasive, which is why it works well as a paste on a stained collar or the inside of a hat band.
It is excellent outside the machine altogether. A box left open in a hamper, sprinkled in a gym bag, or dusted into shoes absorbs a great deal.
What it will not do is strip oil out of fibre or handle hard water, and those are the two causes behind most persistent laundry odors.
What washing soda actually does
This is the one that changes results, and it does three things at once.
It softens water by binding calcium and magnesium before they can reach the fabric. Bound minerals cannot combine with detergent, cannot form scum, and cannot deposit in the weave.
That alone frees up your detergent. In hard water a meaningful share of every dose is consumed fighting minerals rather than cleaning, and washing soda hands that capacity back.
It raises wash water alkalinity substantially, which breaks down body oil and grease far more effectively than any mild additive can.
It helps suspend loosened soil in the water so it rinses away instead of resettling on the load.
Between those effects it deals with the actual sources of laundry odors rather than masking them, which is why a household with hard water usually notices the difference in a single wash.
The trade off is that it is harsh. It will dull some dyes over many washes and it is unsuitable for a long list of fabrics.
Where each one belongs in the cycle
Washing soda goes into the drum at the start of the wash, before the clothes, so it dissolves in the fill water and gets to the minerals first.
Do not put it in the detergent drawer, where it can cake and block the dispenser.
It should never go in the rinse. Its job is finished by then and residual alkalinity left in the fabric can leave items feeling rough.
Baking soda can go in the wash alongside detergent, where it acts as a slight booster.
Baking soda works better as a pre soak. Half a cup dissolved in a basin of warm water with the item left for an hour takes the edge off mild laundry odors in a musty towel.
Neither one belongs in the fabric softener compartment. That compartment releases during the rinse, which is the wrong moment for both.
Neither is a detergent substitute either. They both work by making detergent more effective, so the detergent still has to be there.
Dosage
Half a cup of washing soda per full load is the standard, and that is for a large capacity machine with hard water.
A smaller home machine or moderately hard water takes a quarter cup. More is not better, and overdosing leaves alkaline residue that makes fabric feel harsh and holds laundry odors of its own.
Reduce your detergent when you add washing soda. If it is doing part of the work, the old dose is now too much, and excess detergent is itself a cause of smell.
Half a cup of baking soda per load is the usual figure and there is little point going past it.
For a pre soak, half a cup of baking soda to a gallon or so of warm water, left one to two hours.
For a paste on collars and cuffs, three parts baking soda to one part water, worked in and left fifteen minutes before washing.
Dissolve either powder in warm water before it goes in, because undissolved granules sitting against fabric can leave white marks that look like new stains.
The vinegar problem
Combining either soda with vinegar is one of the most repeated pieces of laundry advice online and one of the least useful.
Vinegar is acetic acid. Both sodas are bases. Put them together and they react, fizz, and produce carbon dioxide, water and a little sodium acetate.
The fizzing looks like something powerful is happening. What is actually happening is that both ingredients are cancelling each other out.
After the reaction you have salty water with almost no cleaning ability and none of the alkalinity you added the soda for.
That does not mean vinegar is useless. Half a cup in the rinse helps strip soap residue and softener buildup, both of which contribute to laundry odors, and it is mildly effective against mineral film.
The rule is simple. Keep them apart. Soda in the wash, vinegar in the rinse, never in the same water at the same time.
Skip the vinegar entirely on anything with elastic or a rubber gasket you care about, since repeated acid exposure degrades both over time.
What neither one will fix about laundry odors
Both are additives, and an additive cannot fix a process problem. Laundry odors that come from the machine, the load size or the timing need the process changed instead.
Neither will help a machine that is itself producing the laundry odors. A gasket, drum or dispenser carrying growth puts the smell back into every clean load, and that needs cleaning rather than dosing.
Neither will rescue a load left wet in the drum overnight, where the smell is already set into the fibre.
Neither compensates for an overloaded machine. A packed drum cannot rinse, and residue left behind is what the smell attaches to.
Neither removes body oil on its own in cold water. Washing soda helps considerably, and it still needs warm water and an enzyme detergent to finish the job.
Neither will fix a fabric that has been through the same cycle a hundred times and now smells sour the moment it gets damp, which is usually residue built up too deep to reach with an additive.
Used properly, though, half a cup of washing soda in the wash is the single cheapest improvement most households can make to a hard water laundry routine.
The Mesquite part
Hard water is the reason this distinction matters more here than it would in a lot of places.
North Texas supplies carry a substantial mineral load. That means a real portion of every detergent dose is spent binding calcium and magnesium instead of cleaning clothes, and what does bind settles into fabric as deposit. Washing soda addresses that directly, which is why it does far more here than baking soda ever will.
Long hot humid summers are the other factor and they shift what you are fighting. Heavy sweating puts more body oil into clothing, and oil is not water soluble, so a cold wash leaves it in the fibre where it slowly turns stale. Alkalinity and warmth are what remove it, and that is washing soda territory rather than baking soda territory.
Fine dust is a smaller local factor with a real effect. Grit works into fabric, holds oils in place, and gives residue somewhere to sit, so thorough rinsing matters. Baking soda still earns its keep here, mostly outside the machine. A hamper in a warm house through a Texas August benefits from an open box in the bottom of it, and so does a gym bag left in a car.
Where an additive can finish its job
Both powders depend on being carried away completely at the end of the cycle.
