How to Prevent Laundry Odors in Lakewood, CO

Wool is the one fibre that mostly looks after itself. It resists laundry odors naturally, holds moisture without ever feeling damp, and recovers from a day of wear if you let it. Washing it on the schedule you use for cotton is the fastest way to ruin it, and most wool that has gone hard and small got there through good intentions.

Why wool does not develop laundry odors the way cotton does

Wool fibre is protein, built with a scaled outer layer and a faintly waxy surface left behind by processing.

The outside of that fibre repels liquid water while the inside readily takes up water vapour, so sweat is absorbed as vapour into the core rather than sitting on the surface as liquid.

Bacteria need liquid water at a surface in order to multiply. Drawing moisture into the fibre core and away from the surface removes the one condition they depend on.

Wool also carries a mildly acidic surface and binds a proportion of the compounds that produce smell, holding onto them instead of releasing them into the air.

The practical result is a merino shirt worn three days running with no laundry odors in it at all, sitting next to a cotton shirt that needed washing after one.

This is a property of the fibre itself. It is not a treatment, it was not applied, and it does not wash out.

Damp wool does not feel damp

Wool can hold roughly a third of its own weight in water before it feels wet to the hand.

That is comfortable to wear and it completely changes the rules for drying, because your fingers turn out to be a poor instrument for judging it.

A jumper that feels finished after a few hours on a flat surface can still be carrying a substantial amount of water in the core of every fibre.

Put it away in that state and it will develop laundry odors within a fortnight, which is where the reputation for wool going musty in a drawer comes from.

The same property is why wool feels warm when it is slightly damp, since water condensing into the fibre releases a small amount of heat as it goes.

So wool is unusually forgiving about getting wet and unusually unforgiving about being put away early.

Airing is the entire maintenance routine

Hang a wool garment somewhere with moving air after each wearing and most of the time you have finished the job.

Overnight is normally enough. A full day is comfortable and costs you nothing except the space.

Turn it inside out for the first few hours so the side that was against skin is the side facing the air.

Do not put it straight back into a wardrobe, because a wardrobe has no air movement in it and the moisture has nowhere at all to go.

Open a window for an hour if there is any smell whatsoever, since exposure to moving air does more for wool than any product ever sold for the purpose.

A garment that still smells after a full day of proper airing is one of the small number that genuinely needs washing, and laundry odors in wool are almost always that rare case rather than the normal one.

Over washing is the actual damage

Every wash costs a wool garment something. Water, movement and detergent all work against protein fibre, and none of the cost is recovered.

The scales on the fibre surface lift in warm water and interlock under agitation. That is felting, and the garment comes out smaller and harder each time it happens.

Detergent strips the natural oils that make wool soft and resilient, and nothing puts them back.

Repeated wetting and drying relaxes and then resets the knit structure, which is how shoulders drop, cuffs go slack and a jumper loses its shape without ever being obviously damaged.

Washing wool four times a season instead of twenty is the single largest thing anybody can do for it.

Once a season for a jumper and roughly once a month for base layers in heavy use is a realistic target for most households, and laundry odors are rarely what sends either one to the sink.

Washing it properly on the occasions you must

Cool water throughout, and the same temperature for the wash and the rinse. A temperature change between the two is on its own enough to shock the fibre.

A wool specific detergent, which in practice means no enzymes. Enzymes break down protein, wool is protein, and a standard biological detergent digests the garment a little every time it is used.

Check the label on anything marketed as gentle, because gentle and enzyme free are two different claims and only one of them is the one you need.

Dissolve the detergent into the water before the garment goes in, so no concentrated liquid ever sits directly against the fibre.

Submerge and press. No rubbing, no twisting, no wringing, and never lift a soaked jumper by the shoulders, because wet wool tears under its own weight.

Rinse in water at the same temperature until it runs clear, then press between two towels rather than squeezing.

A machine wool cycle is acceptable if it genuinely means cold water, minimal agitation and a low spin, and if the garment goes in inside a mesh bag.

Felting cannot be undone

Felting is a mechanical interlocking of the fibre scales, and once they have locked together there is no process that separates them again.

It is caused by heat, by agitation and by sudden temperature change, and usually by all three arriving at once.

A jumper that comes out of a hot wash two sizes down has not shrunk in the ordinary sense. Its structure has changed permanently.

Blocking a felted garment while it is damp recovers a little of the shape and never recovers the handle.

This is why the rules around wool look excessive next to the rules for everything else. They are not about being fussy, they are about avoiding an outcome with no route back.

The dryer is the one absolute in the whole subject. Heat plus tumbling is the fastest possible way to felt a garment.

Drying flat, and the other protein fibres

Wet wool has no structural strength, so hanging it lets the weight of the water stretch the knit permanently out of shape.

Lay it flat on a towel, push it back to its proper dimensions while it is still damp, and then leave it alone.

Turn it over partway through, because the underside dries last and is the part everybody misjudges.

Give it considerably longer than seems necessary and check the thickest sections, which are usually the shoulders and the ribbing at the cuffs and hem.

Silk follows the same logic for a different reason. It is also protein, also enzyme sensitive and also heat damaged, and it additionally fades and weakens in direct sunlight.

Cashmere is wool with a finer and shorter fibre, which means it felts more readily and pills more, so everything above applies with a good deal less margin for error.

The Lakewood part

Airing wool works better in Lakewood than it does in most places, and the reason is the humidity.

Airing only achieves anything if the moisture the fibre gives up has somewhere to go. In damp air it goes nowhere, which is why people in wetter climates find that hanging a jumper overnight makes very little difference.

Here the surrounding air is thirsty almost all year. A jumper hung on the back of a door overnight genuinely releases what it took in during the day, so a once a season washing schedule is realistic rather than aspirational and laundry odors stay away between times.

Winter strengthens the effect rather than weakening it. Heated indoor air is drier again, and that is exactly the season when wool gets worn most.

Two cautions come attached. Strong sun at this elevation fades and weakens both wool and silk quickly, so air garments indoors or in deep shade rather than out on a sunny rail.

And hard water leaves a mineral deposit on protein fibre that makes it feel harsh, so a final rinse in the softest water available, or a softening additive in the wash itself, is what keeps the handle right.

The loads wool does not belong in

Wool wants a sink and a towel, and the rest of the wardrobe wants a machine that can move some water.
