Two loads washed the same way in the same machine can come out completely differently, one ready to fold and one needing an hour with an iron. What decides it is not luck and mostly not detergent. Loads that come out wrinkled were dried packed too tight, dried too hot, or left sitting after the machine stopped.

What a crease actually is
Fabric holds its shape because of bonds between the long molecules inside each fibre. In cotton those are hydrogen bonds between cellulose chains.
Water and heat loosen those bonds and let the chains slide. Drying and cooling lock them again in whatever position the fabric happens to be holding.
So a crease is a fold that got set while the fabric dried or cooled folded. That is the whole mechanism.
This explains why the sharpest creases turn up in the heaviest cotton, why heat sets them harder, and why a fold that formed while something was soaking wet may vanish while one that formed while it was warm and nearly dry will not.
It also explains the cure. Reintroduce moisture and heat, get the fabric flat, and let it dry that way. That is all a steam iron is doing.
Every load that has ever come out wrinkled dried or cooled while something was folding it. The rest of this is a list of the things that do the folding.
Why clothes come out wrinkled from an overloaded dryer
The point of tumbling is that no part of a garment stays folded long enough to set.
A packed drum stops tumbling and starts rolling. The load moves as one block, the same faces stay pressed together, and the items at the bottom carry the weight of everything above them.
Airflow suffers at the same time. Hot air cannot get through a solid mass, so the load stays warm and damp far longer, which is precisely the condition in which folds set.
A dryer should run emptier than a washer. Half to two thirds full by volume is about right, and the load should visibly fall rather than turn.
The tell is a load that took much longer than usual and comes out hot on the outside with damp patches inside. That load will be creased through as well.
Splitting one packed dryer load into two loose ones usually takes less total time, because both dry properly instead of tumbling wet for an extra half hour.
The twenty minutes after the cycle ends
At the moment a dryer stops, the load is warm and holds a little residual moisture. Warm damp fabric is pliable, and pliable fabric takes whatever shape you leave it in.
Left in a stopped drum, the load slumps into a heap and cools under its own weight. Every fold in that heap is being pressed and set as it cools.
Those twenty minutes undo a good cycle. A load pulled immediately and shaken out can be nearly ready to fold, and the same load left an hour will come out wrinkled through every layer.
The washer version is the same and often worse. A spin presses clothes against the drum wall in a compacted layer, and a load left there while it partly air dries sets that compaction into the fabric.
This is what the wrinkle guard or extended tumble option is for. It keeps the load moving without heat so nothing sets while it cools.
If you cannot be there at the end, that option is the single most useful setting on the machine.
Heat is doing more than drying
A dryer does not stop working when the clothes are dry. On a timed cycle it keeps heating, and fibres that have given up their free moisture start losing the moisture bound inside them.
That is where stiffening, shrinkage and a scorched smell come from, and dry hard fibres crease more readily and release a crease less willingly.
High heat on synthetics does something worse. Polyester softens at a temperature a hot dryer can reach, and a fold set while it is soft becomes part of the fabric.
A heat set crease in polyester may never come out, which is exactly the principle used to put permanent pleats into skirts on purpose.
Medium heat and a moisture sensor rather than a timer solves most of it. The sensor stops the cycle when the load stops being wet.
Aim to pull the load very slightly damp. Fabric that finishes the last few percent on a hanger finishes flat instead of folded.
Bone dry and blazing hot is the setting that makes cotton shirts come out wrinkled and stiff at the same time, and both faults have the same cause.
A high spin followed by a delay
A fast spin is good for you, because it pulls out water mechanically and cuts drying time sharply.
It also presses every garment into a dense compacted layer against the drum wall, with folds pressed hard into it.
Unloaded straight away, that does not matter. The fabric is saturated, heavy and mobile, and a shake drops it all out.
Left an hour, the outer surfaces air dry in exactly that compressed shape and the folds are set before the dryer ever gets involved.
So the high spin is not the problem. The high spin plus a delay is the problem.
For things you care about, shake each piece out individually as it goes into the dryer. It sounds fussy and it is the highest return thing on this list.
Fabric type and fibre memory
Some fabrics come out wrinkled no matter how carefully the load is run, and knowing which ones saves you fighting the wrong battle.
Linen creases worst and always will. The fibre is stiff, the bonds are strong, and a linen shirt creases while you are wearing it.
Cotton is next, and heavy cotton more than fine cotton. Denim, canvas and towels hold whatever shape they dry in.
Polyester and nylon resist creasing at moderate temperatures and are the reason travel clothing is made from them. Push the heat up and they hold a crease permanently instead.
Blends behave in between, which is why a blended shirt is easier to live with than a pure cotton one.
Wool has genuine elastic recovery. A wool garment hung on a broad hanger overnight in a slightly humid room will relax on its own.
Rayon and viscose crease easily and are weak when wet, so they should be handled gently and never wrung.
Shirts labelled non iron carry a resin finish that holds the fibres in place. It works, and it wears off gradually, which is why an old one behaves like ordinary cotton.
The last few minutes decide how much pressing you do later
Set a timer for the end of the cycle rather than trusting yourself to remember. That one habit stops more clothes coming out wrinkled than any product on a shelf.
Take the load out while it is still warm and finish the last of the moisture on hangers or a rack.
Shake each item out as you remove it, then hang or fold immediately. Handling once beats handling twice.
Shirts go straight to a hanger with the collar and placket straightened while the fabric is still warm.
Take the heaviest items out first, since they hold the most heat and moisture and will crush whatever is under them.
For a small number of badly creased items, tumbling them for ten minutes with a damp cloth and no heat reintroduces moisture and lets the folds fall out.
The Grand Prairie part
Summer humidity here works against the usual fix. Pulling a load slightly damp and finishing it on a rack is the best way to avoid creasing, and in humid air that last stage takes longer. It still works, and it needs air moving across the rack rather than a still corner of a room.
The same humidity extends the window in which folds set. A load left in a machine on a warm damp afternoon stays pliable much longer than it would in dry air, which sounds like it should help and does the opposite. It simply gives compressed folds more time to establish themselves before the fabric finally dries.
What people wear here in summer makes it worse. Thin cotton, cotton blends and linen are what a North Texas summer calls for, and those are the three fabrics that crease most readily and hold it longest.
Hard water is the quiet factor. Mineral deposit builds up in fibre and stiffens it, and stiff fabric takes a sharper fold and releases it less easily. An accurate detergent dose and an extra rinse keep fabric soft enough to fall out of its own creases.
Where a dryer load has room to tumble
Fabric that keeps moving while it dries is fabric that does not come out wrinkled.
