A shirt goes in carrying nothing worse than one day of wear and comes out smelling faintly sour. Nothing on the shirt did that. The most reliable way to prevent laundry odors is to stop blaming the load and start looking at the drum, the dispenser drawer, the door seal and the drain that every gallon of water passed through on its way out.

Clean clothes that smell of the machine
The clearest sign that the washer is the source is that everything smells the same. A towel, a work shirt and a set of sheets all come out with the identical faint sourness.
Soil from a single garment does not transfer evenly to a whole load. A film on the inside of the machine does, because every item touches it.
The second sign is timing. The smell is strongest on the fabric while it is still wet, fades a little as it dries, then arrives again when the garment is worn.
The third is that the smell lives in the machine on its own. Open the door on an empty washer that has been shut for a day and you can smell it with nothing inside.
If any of those three describe your situation, no change of detergent will prevent laundry odors that begin inside the machine. You are washing clean clothes in dirty water.
What actually accumulates inside a washer
Three things build up in there, and none of them are the clothes.
The first is undissolved detergent and fabric softener. Both are designed to cling, and whatever does not rinse away settles in the low points of the machine as a soft gray deposit.
The second is body oil lifted off fabric. Wash water carries it, and when the water drains, a thin oily layer stays behind on the drum wall, the outer tub and the hoses.
The third is lint and loose fiber, which sticks to the first two and gives the whole deposit body.
Together they make a film that holds moisture and holds smell. Every wash after that runs water across it and then puts that water through your clothes.
You will rarely see any of it. Most of it sits in the outer tub, the space between the drum you can see and the shell around it, and there is no way to look at that surface.
Why a machine that never runs hot builds up film
Cold washing is easier on fabric and easier on the power bill, and it is also the main reason modern washers develop this problem.
Detergent is formulated to work in cold water, but the oils it lifts off clothing do not stay in suspension well at low temperature. A share of them redeposits.
Fabric softener is worse. It is meant to leave a coating behind, and in cold water a good part of that coating goes onto the machine rather than onto the fabric.
High efficiency machines compound it by using very little water. Less water means less dilution and less flow to carry deposit out through the drain.
The answer is not to abandon cold washing. It is to run one hot cycle regularly, which does more to prevent laundry odors than any bottle of additive.
One hot wash a week, on towels or on whites, does most of this work on its own and costs you nothing extra.
The door seal on a front loader
On a front loading machine the rubber boot around the door is the single most common source of smell, and it is the easiest thing to check.
Pull the lip of the seal back toward you and look into the fold underneath. There is usually standing water, lint, a hair or two and a gray smear.
That fold never drains and never dries. It is the one part of the machine that stays wet between every single wash.
Wipe it out with a cloth after the last load of the day. It takes fifteen seconds and it removes more smell than anything you can pour into the drawer.
Check the drain holes in the bottom of the seal at the same time. They block with lint, and a blocked hole holds a cupful of water permanently.
Then leave the door open. A closed drum with a wet seal cannot dry, and a machine that never dries will hold the smell no matter how often it is cleaned.
The dispenser drawer and the drain filter
The dispenser is the second place worth opening, and on most machines it slides all the way out with a small catch to release it.
Softener compartments in particular hold a thick residue, because softener is viscous and the machine flushes that compartment with only a small amount of water.
Rinse the drawer under a hot tap and use a brush on the underside of the lid and inside the siphon cap, which is where the worst of it collects.
Look into the empty housing the drawer came out of as well. The roof of that cavity is often coated, and what is on it drips into every wash.
The drain filter, usually behind a small hatch at the bottom front, is the third. Empty it over a bowl and expect coins, lint and a quantity of dark sludge.
A restricted filter leaves dirty water sitting in the pump between cycles, and that water is the first thing the next load meets.
Running a cleaning cycle so that it does something
Most machines have a drum clean or tub clean setting. Used properly it is the most effective single step available to prevent laundry odors, and used casually it does very little.
Run it empty. Adding a load defeats the point, because the cycle relies on hot water reaching the drum wall rather than being absorbed by fabric.
Use the hottest setting the machine offers. Temperature is what softens the film so the flow can carry it away.
Add a cleaner made for the job, or a large dose of powdered oxygen bleach. Powder works better than liquid here because it is alkaline and cuts oily deposit.
Do it monthly if you wash mostly cold, or every second month if you already run regular hot loads.
Wipe the seal and the door glass as soon as the cycle finishes, while everything is still warm and loose. Then leave the door open to dry.
Habits that prevent laundry odors for good
The maintenance above resets the machine. Habit is the only thing that keeps it reset.
Leave the door and the dispenser drawer open between loads. This one change does more to prevent laundry odors than everything else on this list combined.
Cut the detergent dose. Excess detergent does not rinse out, and what does not rinse out is exactly what feeds the deposit.
Reduce the fabric softener or stop it entirely. If you want softness, a small amount of white vinegar in the rinse does the same job without leaving a coating.
Move the wash out of the drum as soon as the cycle ends. A finished load left sitting in a warm sealed drum picks up the drum smell within an hour or two.
Run the weekly hot cycle on something that benefits from it anyway, like towels or bedding, so the maintenance happens without you scheduling it.
Telling the machine apart from the load
Before you spend a month on maintenance, confirm which problem you have, because the steps that fix a machine are not the ones that fix a load. It takes one wash to find out.
Wash a clean, dry, never worn item on its own, a new tea towel or a spare pillowcase, on your usual cycle with your usual detergent.
Smell it wet, straight out of the drum. If it smells, the machine put that there, because the item went in clean.
If it comes out clean smelling and your normal loads do not, the problem is in the clothes, the load size or the drying, and that is a different fix.
You can have both at once. A machine with a film in it makes every other problem worse and hides which one you are actually dealing with.
The Grand Prairie part
Two local conditions push machines here toward this problem faster than they would in a drier or softer place, and both change what it takes to prevent laundry odors.
Water in this part of North Texas carries a lot of dissolved mineral. Mineral combines with detergent and softener to form a deposit that is harder and more stubborn than soap residue on its own, and it grips the inside of the drum and the seal rather than rinsing away. Powdered cleaner on a hot cycle handles it. Liquid cleaner mostly does not.
Summer humidity is the other one. The air here holds a great deal of water for months at a stretch, so a wet seal and a closed drum have almost no drying pressure on them. A machine standing in a garage or an unconditioned utility room stays damp between loads all season, and damp is what turns a film into a smell.
Storm season adds a smaller factor. Long grey wet stretches mean loads sit longer and drying takes longer, and a washer used heavily through a run of humid days never gets the open door time it needs. Leaving that door open overnight is worth more here in July than it would be in a dry climate.
Where the water volume does the work
If a machine at home has left a smell in a load, a wash somewhere with real water volume is the fastest way to prevent laundry odors from carrying over into the next one.

The short version
If every load smells the same, the washer is the source rather than the clothes. Detergent residue, fabric softener and body oil build a film inside the drum, the outer tub, the dispenser and the door seal, and cold washing with very little water leaves that film in place. Run an empty hot drum clean cycle with powdered cleaner monthly, pull back the door seal and wipe out the fold underneath, rinse the dispenser drawer and clear the drain filter. Then leave the door and drawer open between loads, cut the detergent dose, drop the softener and move wet laundry out as soon as the cycle ends.
