High Vis Work Wear Loses Its Reflectivity

High vis work wear loses its reflectivity long before it looks worn out, and that matters more than an ordinary garment fading, because the whole point of the clothing is being seen. A vest that has gone from fluorescent to pale, or whose silver bands no longer light up under headlights, is no longer doing the job it was bought for.

Two separate systems doing two separate jobs

High vis clothing works in two different ways and they fail independently.

The fluorescent background, the yellow, orange, or lime fabric, works in daylight. Fluorescent dye absorbs ultraviolet light and re-emits it in the visible range, which is why the colour looks brighter than it should. In daylight and at dusk it makes the wearer conspicuous. In darkness it does nothing at all, because there is no ultraviolet to convert.

The retroreflective bands, the silver-grey strips, work at night. They are made of tiny glass beads or microprismatic structures that send light back toward its source rather than scattering it, which is why they blaze under headlights and look dull grey by day.

You need both. A garment with intact bands and dead fluorescent fabric fails at dusk, which is when a great deal of the risk actually is.

How each one fails

Fluorescent dye is destroyed by ultraviolet light. Sunlight is what makes the garment work and it is also what kills it, which is an awkward property. A vest worn outdoors daily loses fluorescence steadily whether you wash it or not.

It is also degraded by heat, by chlorine bleach, and by industrial detergents.

Retroreflective bands fail differently. The beads or prisms need a clean, undamaged optical surface. They fail by abrasion, by being coated in grime or detergent residue, by cracking, and by delaminating from the backing.

Heat is the main enemy. The bands are usually bonded with adhesive and heat softens the bond, which is why bands lift at the edges after a few hot dryer cycles.

Washing high vis work wear

Wash it more often than instinct suggests. Dirt on the reflective bands blocks them optically, so a filthy vest has effectively lost its night performance even though nothing is damaged. Cleaning restores it.

Wash separately from ordinary laundry, because work wear carries grit and oil that transfer.

Turn the garment inside out, which protects the bands from abrasion against the drum.

Warm water rather than hot. Most high vis garments specify a maximum around 40 degrees, and hotter water attacks both the dye and the band adhesive.

A mild detergent, and a small dose. Never a detergent with optical brighteners, which sounds counterintuitive on a garment about visibility but interferes with the fluorescent dye.

Never chlorine bleach, which destroys fluorescent dye quickly and permanently.

Never fabric softener, which leaves a film on the retroreflective surface that reduces its return directly.

Gentle cycle, moderate spin, and do not overload the drum, since crowding means friction on the bands.

Drying

Air dry where possible. This is the single best thing you can do for the bands.

If you use a dryer, use the lowest heat and take the garment out slightly damp.

Never high heat, which is what lifts band edges and cracks the reflective surface.

Dry in shade rather than in direct sun. Sun is what destroys the fluorescent dye, and a wet garment in strong sun fades noticeably faster than a dry one because the dye is mobile while the fabric is damp.

Never iron directly over reflective bands, which melts them.

Checking whether it still works

Garments have a service life and it is shorter than people assume. Many manufacturers rate high vis for a set number of washes, often around 25, and that number is on the label.

Check the fluorescent fabric against a new garment of the same colour. If it looks noticeably paler side by side, the daylight performance has gone.

Check the bands with a phone. In a dark room, hold the phone at eye level with the flash on and photograph the garment from several metres away. Working bands return a bright silver. Dead ones photograph grey.

Look for cracking, lifted edges, and missing sections on the bands. Any significant loss and the garment is finished.

Retire it rather than demoting it to a spare. A vest that no longer performs is worse than no vest, because the wearer believes they are visible.

What ruins it fastest

Industrial or hot commercial laundering, which most consumer high vis is not rated for.

Chlorine bleach.

High dryer heat.

Leaving it in direct sun when not being worn, on a dashboard or a truck bed, which fades it while doing no work.

Ironing or heat pressing logos over the bands.

Ultraviolet exposure is the local factor and it is a large one.

North Texas gets strong sun for most of the year, and fluorescent dye is destroyed specifically by ultraviolet. High vis worn outdoors here fades measurably faster than the same garment in a cloudier region, which means the replacement interval is genuinely shorter and a garment that looks fine after a year may already have lost real daylight performance.

The practical habits that follow are worth building. Do not leave vests on a dashboard or hanging in a truck window between shifts. Dry them in shade. And check the colour against a new one every few months rather than assuming a garment is good until it looks obviously wrong.

The heat is the second factor and it works on the bands. A vehicle interior here reaches temperatures that soften the adhesive holding retroreflective tape, so gear stored in a hot truck through a summer can arrive at autumn with bands already lifting at the edges without ever having seen a dryer.

Hard water is the third, smaller factor. Mineral deposits leave a film on retroreflective surfaces that dulls the return, which is exactly the failure mode you cannot see in daylight. Half a cup of washing soda in the wash prevents the deposits.

Where work loads belong

Work wear is heavy, gritty, and oily, and it should not share a drum with household clothing or with the reflective garments it will abrade.
