Charcoal bags, baking soda boxes and small silica pots are sold as an answer to laundry odors, and they answer a narrow slice of the problem. They pull smell molecules out of the air in an enclosed space. They do close to nothing for fabric that is carrying the source itself, which is most of the time.

Absorbing and masking are opposite strategies
A masker adds a smell. Air freshener, scented spray, a plug in unit, a dryer sheet: every one of them works by putting something stronger over the top.
The original molecules are all still present. You have added a second thing to smell, and the two combine into the particular note everybody recognises as a room that has been covered up.
An absorber takes molecules out of the air instead. Nothing is added, and when it works the result is nothing rather than something pleasant.
That single difference decides where each one is any use.
A masker can be applied directly to fabric. An absorber cannot, because it has to trap molecules inside its own structure and it has no way to reach into a fibre and do that.
Most products sold for household smells are maskers with a picture of a leaf on the front, and the packaging is careful never to say which it is.
What activated charcoal is actually doing
Activated charcoal is carbon processed to create an enormous internal surface area, riddled with pores at a molecular scale.
Smell molecules drifting past stick to those pore walls through weak physical attraction. The term is adsorption, meaning they cling to a surface rather than being soaked up the way a sponge takes water.
It works across many of the volatile organic compounds that make up household smells, it works passively, it needs no power and it has no scent of its own.
It is slow. A charcoal bag in a wardrobe is working over days rather than minutes, which is acceptable because a wardrobe is a slow problem.
It saturates. Once the pores are occupied it stops, and there is no visible change to tell you when that happened.
Sunlight is the usual recharging advice and it does drive off part of what is held. It does not restore a bag indefinitely, and a couple of years is a fair working life for one.
Baking soda, silica gel and what each is genuinely for
Baking soda neutralises acids chemically rather than adsorbing broadly. It is good against sour, acidic smells specifically, which is why it earns its place in a fridge.
An open box in an enclosed space is the correct use. Sitting in a cupboard with the lid still on, it accomplishes precisely nothing.
It is much weaker across the broad range of compounds charcoal handles, so it is a targeted tool rather than a general one.
Silica gel is a desiccant. It absorbs water vapour and it does not remove smells.
That still helps indirectly, because drier air slows the growth that generates the smells in the first place. It is prevention rather than removal.
Zeolite sits between the two, holding both moisture and some smell compounds, and it is what most reusable moisture tubs are filled with.
Why they work in storage and fail on a worn garment
An absorber affects only the air immediately around it, and only in a space where that air is not constantly being replaced.
A wardrobe with the door shut is such a space. A room with the door open is not, and neither is a person walking around in a shirt.
The bigger issue is that a worn garment is not releasing a fixed quantity of smell into still air. It is producing more of it continuously.
Body oil sitting in the fibre feeds bacteria, and the bacteria generate fresh compounds faster than any passive absorber can take them away.
You would be trying to empty a bath with the tap left running.
So a charcoal bag in a drawer of clean clothing is doing something worthwhile, and the same bag thrown into a kit bag with a damp shirt is being asked to do the impossible, because the laundry odors are being made faster than they can be captured.
What absorbers can and cannot do about laundry odors
They can hold the air in a wardrobe neutral between washes, which stops clean clothes taking on the smell of the room they live in.
They can keep a drawer of stored seasonal clothing from developing the flat, closed smell that comes from months of motionless air.
They can take the edge off a car, a shoe cupboard or a sports bag that is otherwise empty and dry.
They cannot remove laundry odors from a garment. Those compounds are bound in the fibre and in the oil coating it, not drifting freely in the air nearby.
They cannot dry anything meaningfully. Silica manages small sealed volumes, and a room needs a dehumidifier or a window.
They cannot compete with an active source. Take out the damp towel and the absorber starts working. Leave it in and nothing else you do matters.
Where they genuinely earn their place
Between wears is the strongest case. A jacket or a pair of trousers worn twice and put back sits in a wardrobe for days, and an absorber keeps that pocket of air neutral.
Long term storage is the second. Anything packed away for a season goes into still air and comes out smelling of the container, and charcoal in the container prevents that.
An empty sports bag with the zip open and a charcoal insert in the bottom stays usable indefinitely. The same bag zipped shut with kit inside it does not.
Shoes are close to the ideal application, being enclosed, dark and damp, and they are also a place where washing is awkward.
A car boot that carries gear is another, because it is a sealed volume nobody ever washes.
In every one of those the fabric involved is either clean or absent. That is the pattern behind every successful use of an absorber against laundry odors, and it is the whole rule in one sentence.
When reaching for one means avoiding a wash
There comes a point where an absorber turns into a way of not doing the obvious thing.
If a garment smells while you are wearing it, no passive product will change that. It needs washing today rather than at the weekend.
If a smell returns within an hour of putting something on, the source is oil sitting in the fibre and only a wash removes oil.
If a whole drawer smells, the drawer is not the culprit. Something went in there damp.
If the machine smells, it wants a hot empty cycle and a wipe around the seal, not a bag hanging inside the drum.
Absorbers are for the gap between washes and for enclosed spaces. Used for anything else they are a delaying tactic, and laundry odors get more expensive to fix every week they are delayed.
The Denver part
Houses here spend a long stretch of the year shut up. The heating season runs for months, windows stay closed, and the air inside a home turns over far less than it does in spring or autumn.
That is exactly the condition absorbers were made for. Motionless air inside enclosed volumes is where they work, and a closed house through winter is a collection of enclosed volumes stacked next to each other.
It is also the condition that makes their limits obvious. A wardrobe that never gets any fresh air holds whatever goes into it, so a coat hung up slightly damp in December is still contributing in February.
The dry air cuts both ways. Very low indoor humidity means fewer of the mildew problems that plague shut up houses in wetter parts of the country, so a charcoal bag here is usually managing ordinary wear smells rather than growth.
That same dryness means a desiccant has almost nothing to do. Silica in a Colorado closet is close to redundant, while charcoal in the same closet has a real job in front of it.
Dry winter static is the odd side effect of all this, and it is worth mentioning because people blame it on their detergent. Cold dry air charges fabric as it moves, no absorber has any effect on it, and it has nothing to do with laundry odors either.
The wash that makes an absorber unnecessary
Passive products manage the air around clean clothes, and getting clothes clean in the first place is an entirely different job.
