Flags and banners are the only textiles most people own that live outdoors full time, and they wear out in a way nothing in a wardrobe does. Sun takes the colour, wind takes the edge, and damp storage takes the rest. Understanding which of those is happening tells you whether to wash it, repair it or replace it.

Ultraviolet light is the main enemy and fading does not reverse
Everything else that happens to flags and banners can be managed. Sun damage cannot be undone once it has happened, so it is worth understanding first.
Ultraviolet light breaks the chemical bonds in dye molecules. The pigment is not washed away or covered over, it is destroyed where it sits, which is why no wash, no treatment and no colour restorer brings it back.
The same radiation attacks the fibre itself. Nylon and polyester both lose tensile strength under prolonged exposure, so an old flag is weaker as well as paler, and it tears at wind speeds it used to shrug off.
Red and orange go first, almost always. Those dyes are the least stable under ultraviolet, which is why a faded flag reads as blue and white long before the other colours give up.
Nothing you do stops this. What you can do is share the load. Two flags in rotation, each flown half the time, last far more than twice as long as one flown continuously, because ultraviolet damage builds with exposure hours.
Take a flag down in weather it does not need to be out in. A flag flown through a storm for no reason has spent a month of its working life in an afternoon.
Nylon against polyester, and what each one is for
The two fabrics used for flags and banners behave differently enough that choosing wrong is the most expensive mistake in this whole subject.
Nylon is light, bright and glossy. It lifts and flies in very little wind, and colours on nylon look richer because the fabric takes dye well and has some sheen.
That lightness is also its weakness. Nylon is more vulnerable to ultraviolet light than polyester, and in constant strong wind it flaps itself apart quickly.
Polyester, specifically the heavy two ply open weave sold for exposed sites, is a coarser and duller fabric that looks more like cotton bunting. It needs real wind to fly properly.
In exchange it holds up far better to sustained wind and it resists fading longer. On an open, windy site it is normally the better choice even though it costs more and hangs limp on a still day.
Cotton is a third option and it is for indoor and ceremonial use only. Outdoors it absorbs water, holds it, goes heavy and turns musty, and it fades faster than either synthetic.
Why stitched flags and banners outlast printed ones
How the design is applied matters as much as what the fabric is.
A printed flag has the design applied to one side and pushed through the weave, so the reverse is a mirror image and usually paler. The dye sits at and near the surface, which is exactly where ultraviolet light does its work.
A sewn flag is built from separate panels of dyed fabric joined together, with any emblem appliqued on and stitched down. The colour goes right through the material because each piece was dyed as cloth.
That construction difference is why sewn flags and banners hold their colour noticeably longer and why they read the same from both sides.
Sewn pieces also fail more gracefully. When a seam goes, it goes at the stitch line and can be restitched, whereas a printed flag that has thinned in the sun has no repair available.
Printed material still has its place. Event banners, sponsor banners and anything with a complicated multicolour design are printed because sewing them would be impractical, and those are usually short term pieces anyway.
The fly end frays first and early repair is the whole game
The fly end is the free edge furthest from the pole, and it takes almost all the mechanical damage.
In wind, that edge cracks back and forth like a whip. The tip of it is moving much faster than anything else on the flag, and the fibres there break one at a time until the hem lets go.
Once the hem opens, the fabric behind it unravels along the weave and the flag loses length quickly. A quarter inch of fraying is a ten minute repair. Two inches means cutting back into the design.
Check the fly end every couple of weeks. The moment the stitching shows loose threads or the hem gapes, take it down.
The repair is to trim the damaged edge square, turn a new double hem, and stitch it with polyester thread in a straight stitch and then a second row a little inside the first. The flag gets shorter by an inch and gains months.
Cotton thread is a poor choice for this, since it breaks down outdoors faster than the fabric does and the repair fails before the flag does.
Also check where the flag meets its hardware. A heading that is pulling away from its grommet, or a clip working a hole larger, ends a flag as surely as the fly end does.
Washing one without wrecking it
Flags and banners collect dust, grit, pollen and exhaust film, and all of that is abrasive. A dirty flag wears faster because every gust grinds the grit through the weave.
Wash before the soil becomes obvious rather than after. On a normally exposed site that means every couple of months in the flying season.
Cold or cool water only. Warm water accelerates dye migration, and red on white is the worst combination for bleeding.
Use a mild detergent and a modest dose. Skip anything with optical brighteners, which sit on the fabric and do nothing useful outdoors, and skip fabric softener entirely.
Hand washing in a tub is the gentlest method. Submerge, press, let it soak ten minutes, and press again rather than scrubbing. Scrubbing a printed flag lifts the print.
If it is going in a machine, use a gentle cycle, cold water, a low spin and a mesh bag or a pillowcase to keep the fly end from tangling and beating itself. Wash it alone.
Rinse until the water runs completely clear. Detergent left in an outdoor textile holds moisture and attracts dust, which is the opposite of what you were trying to achieve.
Never bleach, and dry it flat
Chlorine bleach on any coloured outdoor textile is the fastest way to end it. It strips dye unevenly and it weakens nylon and cotton fibre at the same time, so you get a patchy flag that is also brittle.
Oxygen bleach is gentler but it is still unnecessary on a flag, and on a printed one it will dull the design. Leave both out.
A dryer is the other thing to avoid. Heat melts and glazes synthetic fibres, and a nylon flag can pick up a permanently shiny scorched patch from a cycle that would not trouble a shirt.
Air dry, and dry it flat if you have the space. Laid out on a sheet or over a drying rack, a flag dries evenly and keeps its shape.
If you hang it instead, hang it over a line rather than by one corner. Wet fabric carries real weight and a single hanging point pulls the weave out of square.
Dry out of direct sun. There is no reason to spend ultraviolet hours on drying when the flag is going to get plenty outdoors anyway.
Give it longer than you think. A hem is several layers thick and a grommet area holds water long after the field of the flag feels dry.
Storing it damp is the fastest way to ruin one
More flags and banners are lost in a box than on a pole, and the cause is almost always moisture.
A flag taken down in the rain and folded straight into a container will be sour and musty within days in warm weather, and that damp leaves permanent spotting on white panels even after the smell is washed out.
So the rule is simple. Nothing goes away until it is completely dry, including the heading, the hem and the area around every grommet.
Store folded loosely rather than crushed, and in a breathable bag or a cardboard box rather than a sealed plastic tub. Plastic holds whatever moisture is left against the fabric.
Keep it off a concrete floor, which draws damp upward, and out of an attic that swings between extreme heat and cold.
A flag that has been stored properly comes out ready to fly. One that has been stored damp comes out as a cleaning cloth.
The Denton part
Sun exposure here is the dominant factor and it runs for most of the year. North Texas gives an outdoor textile a long stretch of high sun angle and clear sky, and ultraviolet damage accumulates by the hour rather than by the season, so a flag flown continuously through a local summer ages faster than the calendar suggests. Rotating two flags rather than flying one into the ground is the single change that makes the most difference here.
Wind is the second factor and it is why fabric choice matters more here than in sheltered places. Open ground across this part of the state gives a flag steady wind with hard gusts on top, and steady wind is what destroys a fly end. Light nylon flies beautifully on a calm morning and pays for it on an exposed site, and heavier two ply polyester earns its keep on anything that stays up year round.
Spring storm season brings the other kind of damage, the sudden kind. A squall line arriving with dust ahead of it drives grit into the weave and then soaks it, and a flag left up through that comes down heavy, gritty and stretched. Bringing one in before a storm and washing the grit out afterwards costs a few minutes and saves months of service.
The humid stretch of summer is what makes the damp storage rule matter locally. Warm, moist air means flags and banners folded away with any moisture left in the hem will turn musty quickly, and a garage or shed here is not a drying environment in July. Dry it flat indoors with air moving over it, check the grommet corners with your fingers, and only then put it away.
Where a flag gets a gentle wash and a full rinse
The two things a flag needs from a wash are room to move without tangling and enough water to carry the grit out of the weave.

The short version
