A hoodie fails at the cuffs and the hem first, and it fails there for a reason that has nothing to do with the fabric. The ribbing at those points is a different material doing a different job, and almost everything people do in the laundry works against it.

How a sweatshirt is built
Understanding the construction explains where it goes wrong.
The body is usually a knit called fleece, which is not the same thing as the technical fleece in an outdoor jacket. Sweatshirt fleece is a cotton or cotton polyester knit with loops on the inside face, and those loops are brushed to raise a soft nap.
That nap is what makes a hoodie feel good and it is the first thing to go. Brushed fibres flatten, mat, and pill with abrasion and heat.
The cuffs, hem, and sometimes the hood opening are rib knit with elastane in them, which is a stretch fibre that recovers its shape.
Elastane is the part that dies. Heat degrades it, chlorine degrades it, and once it stops recovering the cuff hangs open permanently and there is no fixing it.
So a hoodie is a soft napped body attached to elastic trim, and the two need different things.
What actually wears one out
Heat is first and it is not close. Hot water and a hot dryer degrade elastane faster than anything else, which is why cuffs go before the fabric does.
Over-drying is the specific error. A load left tumbling past dry is fabric grinding on fabric with no moisture cushioning it, which mats the nap and cooks the elastic.
Friction against rough items abrades the nap and starts the pilling.
Fabric softener coats the loops of the nap, which flattens it and makes the fleece feel slick rather than soft.
Hanging a wet one on a hanger stretches the shoulders permanently, since a wet sweatshirt is heavy and the knit has no structure to resist it.
And washing after every single wear, when a hoodie is usually worn over something else, roughly doubles the number of cycles it has to survive.
The wash routine
Turn it inside out. This protects the nap on the outer face and any print on the front, and it puts the wear on the side nobody sees.
Cold water. There is no cleaning benefit on a lightly worn sweatshirt that justifies what warm water does to the elastic.
Gentle or normal cycle, and a moderate spin rather than the highest available.
Wash with other soft items. Keep hoodies out of loads containing denim, towels, zips, and hooks, all of which abrade the nap and catch the knit.
Mild detergent, normal dose, and no fabric softener at all.
Zip the zip on a zip through hoodie and fasten any toggles, since loose hardware damages both this garment and everything around it.
Do not overload, since compression is what forces the nap against other fabric hard enough to mat it.
Drying, where the cuffs are decided
Air dry flat if you want the garment to last. Flat rather than hung, because hanging a wet knit stretches it.
If you use a dryer, low heat only, and take it out while still slightly damp.
Never dry on high. This is the single change that most extends a hoodie’s life.
Do not leave it sitting in the dryer after the cycle ends, since that is compressed warm fabric setting creases into a knit.
Reshape the cuffs and hem by hand while damp, easing them back to their proper width, then let them finish drying in that shape.
Lay it flat on a towel or a rack rather than over a rail, which leaves a permanent line across the middle.
Bringing back stretched cuffs
Elastane that has genuinely degraded is finished, and there is a partial fix worth trying first.
Dip just the cuff in hot water for a few seconds, which makes the fibres contract.
Then let it air dry without stretching it, resting flat.
This tightens a cuff noticeably and it is temporary, lasting a wash or two. It works because heat contracts the fibre, and the same heat is what wore it out, so this is a repair with a cost.
Do not do it repeatedly, and do not do it to the whole garment.
Genuinely dead cuffs can be replaced by someone who does alterations, which is worth it on a good garment and not on a cheap one.
Pilling, and getting the nap back
Pills are loose fibre ends that have tangled into balls, and they are a sign of abrasion rather than of poor quality.
Remove them with a fabric shaver or a sweater comb, working in one direction with light pressure.
Never pull pills off by hand, since that takes live fibre with them and thins the fabric.
A matted inner nap can be partly revived by tumbling on air fluff with no heat and a couple of dryer balls, which lifts the loops mechanically.
Once the nap is genuinely worn through to the knit underneath, it is gone.
How often it actually needs washing
Less often than most people wash one, and this is the cheapest life extension available.
A hoodie worn over a t-shirt, for a few hours, indoors, does not need washing. The t-shirt does.
Every three or four wears is reasonable for ordinary use.
Immediately after any workout, or after anything that got it genuinely sweaty, since sweat salt degrades elastane and sets into the nap.
Air it between wears rather than folding it straight into a drawer, which handles most of what a wash would.
Spot clean cuffs and the front pocket opening, which are the areas that actually get dirty, rather than running the whole garment through a cycle for two grubby patches.
The Aurora part
Sweatshirts do more work here than in most climates and two local conditions decide how they hold up.
The temperature swing is the reason they get worn so hard. Days along the Front Range routinely move through a wide range between morning and afternoon, which makes a hoodie the default layer for most of the year rather than a winter garment. That means more wears, more washes, and more cumulative heat exposure on the elastic than the same garment would see almost anywhere else, so the cold wash and low dry rules compound over a much larger number of cycles.
The dry air is the compensating advantage and it makes the correct method practical. Flat air drying is the right way to dry a sweatshirt and the reason people skip it is that it takes a day and a half in most places. Here, low humidity and altitude mean a hoodie laid flat indoors dries in hours, which removes the excuse for the hot dryer that kills the cuffs.
Static is the third factor and it is a genuine winter nuisance here. Dry indoor air plus a cotton polyester knit produces a lot of it, and the instinct is to reach for fabric softener or dryer sheets, which coat and flatten the nap. Wool dryer balls and taking the load out slightly damp handle static without doing that.
Where a gentle cold load has room
Sweatshirts are bulky, they absorb a lot of water, and a home drum packed with three of them compresses rather than tumbles.
