Chapter House Laundry and the Volume a Full House Makes

A house with a few dozen people living in it does not do laundry the way a household does. It is the same task at a scale where every small inefficiency multiplies, and chapter house laundry that works is mostly a matter of sequencing rather than of equipment. A schedule holds up better as a soft rule than a hard one. Named windows, plus a general agreement that an unused window is fair game after twenty minutes.

Batching is the other approach. Personal laundry happens whenever it happens, but house linen, towels and anything communal gets done in one deliberate run, off site if the volume warrants it, so it never competes with anybody’s jeans.

Strip guest beds afterwards as a single job. It is a batch of its own and it will not happen if it is left to individuals.

Why a wet load cannot sit

In this climate a damp load has a short window, and that one fact should shape how chapter house laundry is organised.

Practice gear, gym kit and anything worn at an event comes off heavy with sweat, and sweat sitting in warm fabric goes sour quickly.
