Pull a blackout panel out of a dryer and you may find fine grey dust in the drum and a curtain that no longer stops light. Blackout curtains are not simply thick curtains, they carry a coating or a bonded layer on the back, and that layer is the thing that fails when the panel gets washed the way an ordinary curtain would be.

The three ways blackout curtains are built
Three constructions get sold under the same name and they want different handling, so it is worth a minute working out which one is on the rail.
The first is a coated panel. A layer of acrylic or foam is applied to the back of a fabric, essentially painted onto it, and that layer is what stops the light. Run a hand over the back and it feels rubbery and slightly plastic, and it is a different colour from the front.
The second is a bonded three pass panel. Three layers of foam are applied in sequence, usually with a black layer in the middle, and the result is heavier and much more flexible than a single coating. It feels like fabric rather than like rubber.
The third is a separate liner, which is a plain panel hung behind a decorative curtain on its own hooks or clipped onto the same rings.
There is a fourth thing sold under the same word that has no coating at all, being simply a dense tight weave. It reduces light rather than stopping it, and it washes like any other heavy curtain.
Put a hand on the back. A coating you can feel is the signal that the normal rules stop applying.
Why heat destroys the coating
On blackout curtains the coating and the fabric are two different materials stuck together, and they respond to heat at different rates.
In a hot wash the coating softens. In a dryer it softens further while being tumbled and flexed at the same time, and the bond between the layers gives way.
What that looks like is cracking first and flaking second. The coating leaves in small pieces, which is where the grey dust in the drum comes from, and the panel ends up patchy and passing light in exactly the places it lost its layer.
It cannot be repaired. Nothing on a shelf puts a blackout layer back onto a curtain, and a patchy panel is finished in that role even if it still looks acceptable while it is open.
Heat also shrinks the fabric backing at a different rate from the coating, which is why a washed panel comes out puckered and hangs badly even where the layer survived intact.
So blackout curtains get no hot water, no dryer, and no iron on the coated side. That is most of the guidance compressed into one line.
Washing a coated panel
Do it rarely. Blackout curtains do not need washing on a schedule, and every wash is wear on the part that does the work.
Take the hooks, rings, pins and any weights out first. Metal hardware loose in a drum with a coated panel scores the surface and marks the fabric.
Wash cold on a gentle cycle, one panel at a time, with a small amount of mild detergent. A packed drum is the enemy, since a coating is damaged by being creased and compressed under weight while wet.
No bleach and no fabric softener. Softener sits on a coated surface rather than absorbing into it, and what it leaves behind is a film that collects dust.
Use a low spin. A high spin presses a heavy wet panel hard against the drum wall and puts sharp creases into a layer that will not release them.
Then straight out and straight up. A coated panel left in a heap while wet takes a set from its own weight within the hour.
Why a separate liner is the better design
If there is a choice being made, a detachable liner solves most of what this article is about.
The two panels collect different things. The liner faces the glass and takes condensation, sill dust and direct sun. The decorative panel faces the room and takes household dust and whatever else is in the air.
They also want different cleaning. A decorative curtain might be lined cotton, linen or velvet with its own set of rules, while a liner is a plain functional panel you can be far rougher with.
Hung together and washed together, the decorative fabric ends up getting whatever the liner needed, which is a compromise that suits neither of them.
A liner also fails on its own without taking anything with it. When the coating reaches the end, you replace a plain panel rather than a set of curtains you picked out.
Dust, and the routine that avoids washing at all
Dust is the main thing blackout curtains actually accumulate, and it is entirely manageable without water.
Vacuum both faces with a brush attachment on low suction, working from the top down, since dust falls and the bottom of a panel collects whatever the top lets go of.
Do the top edge, the header and the rail while you are there. That is where the heaviest deposit sits and it is the part nobody ever looks at.
Once a month through the dusty part of the year is enough, and it takes a few minutes per window.
Blackout curtains vacuumed regularly may never need immersing at all, which for a coated curtain is the best possible outcome.
Hanging them damp instead of ironing them
How a coated panel dries decides how it hangs afterwards, and the right method also removes any need for an iron.
Put it back on the rail while it is still damp, hooks in, and let its own weight pull the creases out over a few hours.
Smooth the folds down by hand while it dries and set the pleats at the header where you want them to stay.
Open a window or aim a fan at it so air moves across both faces. A coated panel can only dry from one side, and a still room roughly doubles the time.
Never iron the coated side. If the front face genuinely needs pressing, use the lowest setting with a pressing cloth and keep the plate off the back entirely.
Sun damage on the side you never look at
Blackout curtains take ultraviolet on the window side and take it hard, because that is precisely the job they were bought for.
The obvious result is fading, usually along the leading edge and the outer third where the sun sits longest.
Underneath that, the fibres themselves weaken. Sun rotted curtain fabric tears along a fold or at the header when it is handled, and a wash is often what reveals the damage rather than what caused it.
The coating ages in parallel. An older panel goes stiff and brittle before it starts flaking, and a brittle coating fails in a wash that a newer one would have shrugged off.
A liner takes that punishment instead of the decorative fabric, which is the other argument for owning one.
Spotting on the window side, which is a window problem
Dark speckling on the back of a panel near the bottom or along an edge is worth reading as information about the window rather than about the curtain.
It means moisture is condensing on the glass or the frame and the fabric is resting against it, and cleaning the fabric does nothing about the cause.
The usual sources are a window that never gets opened, a bathroom or kitchen window with no ventilation, or an evaporative cooler adding moisture to a room kept closed up.
On the fabric itself, brush the growth off outdoors first. Dry brushing removes far more than wet cleaning does and it does not spread it across the panel.
Then treat what remains with an oxygen bleach solution on a plain cotton liner, or a mild detergent and a careful wipe on a coated one. Staining often stays, and the point is stopping the growth rather than restoring the colour.
The Tempe part
Blackout curtains work harder here than in most places, and that changes how long they last rather than how they get washed.
The sun is intense and it sits on the glass for a long stretch of the day for most of the year. A panel closed through the afternoon for months absorbs that energy continuously, and heat combined with ultraviolet ages a coating faster than washing ever will.
That makes the layer brittle sooner. A panel a few years into that kind of exposure is much more likely to crack in a wash than a new one, which is a strong argument for vacuuming rather than washing once a panel has some age on it.
Desert dust is the second factor and it never stops. Fine dust finds its way indoors through every gap, settles on the top edge and works down into the weave, so a brush attachment and a regular pass along the header earns its keep here more than it would anywhere with wetter ground.
The dry air is the one condition working in your favour. A panel hung damp on the rail with a window open or a fan running dries quickly, so the rule against putting these anywhere near a dryer costs you almost nothing in waiting.
Where a full length panel gets enough water
A curtain is a large flat thing that has to move freely in water, and that is a drum size question before it is anything else.
