The washer stops mid cycle, the lights go out, and a comforter sits soaking in a drum with no way to spin and no way to dry. Storm season bedding problems are mostly clock problems. Wet bedding left alone starts to smell within hours and mildews within a day, and in warm weather it moves faster than that.

The clock on wet storm season bedding
Wet fabric is a growing medium. Mould spores are already in the fibre and in the air, and water plus warmth is the only thing they were waiting for.
For the first two to four hours, wet bedding smells of very little. That is your window and it is the whole reason for acting quickly.
By six to twelve hours a sour smell develops. That smell is bacterial and it does wash out.
By twenty four to forty eight hours mildew is established, and mildew stains as well as smells. The staining is the part that does not always come out.
Heat compresses the whole timeline. A wet comforter in a warm house with no air conditioning moves through those stages considerably faster than the same comforter in a cool room.
Weight makes it worse again. A comforter holds an enormous amount of water and dries from the outside in, so the core stays genuinely wet long after the surface feels merely damp.
What to do in the first hour
Storm season bedding is lost in the first hour far more often than on the third day, so start there.
Get it out of the machine. A comforter balled at the bottom of a drum with the door shut is the worst possible arrangement, because there is no airflow and the folds hold water against themselves.
Press water out rather than wringing. Fold it over and press down with your weight, or lay it flat and press along its length. Wringing twists the fill into a rope and those clumps are hard to undo later.
Spread it out. Over a railing, over several chairs, across a shower rod, anywhere it can hang open with air on both sides. Laid flat on one surface is much worse than draped with a gap underneath.
Get air moving. A battery fan, an open window, a cross draught through the house. Moving air does more than warmth does.
Separate the layers. Sheets, covers, and the comforter all dry faster apart, and a wet sheet wrapped around a comforter keeps the comforter wet.
If the outage will run long and the weather allows it, outside in a breeze under cover beats inside with no airflow.
Why a half washed comforter is worse than a dirty one
A comforter that was mid cycle when the power failed has detergent in it and no rinse behind it.
Detergent left in fabric pulls moisture out of the air and holds it. A comforter with detergent still in the fill stays damp longer than one that is simply wet with plain water.
The residue also feeds the problem. It gives the surface something to hold onto, and it goes sticky and yellow if it dries in place.
So a half washed comforter runs on a shorter clock than a dirty dry one, and the first priority is getting the detergent out rather than getting it dry.
If there is running water, rinse it by hand in a tub of cold water, pressing rather than agitating, changing the water two or three times until it stops sudsing.
If there is no water at all, spread it open with air moving over it and rewash it properly the moment power returns.
Rewashing storm season bedding after the power comes back
The short answer is almost always yes, rewash it.
If it never finished a rinse, it has to go again regardless of how it smells. Detergent left in the fibre stiffens fabric and holds moisture indefinitely.
If it finished the wash but then sat wet for more than a few hours, rewash it too. Even with no smell you can detect, growth has started, and a wash with a proper rinse resets it.
Use the hottest wash the care label allows for anything that has soured. Heat and detergent together handle the bacteria behind the smell where a cold wash often does not.
Add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse rather than to the wash, so it is not meeting the detergent directly. Vinegar neutralises the odour compounds that survive.
Then dry it fully and longer than usual, on low, with dryer balls, checking the core rather than the edges before you call it done.
Bedding that has taken in dirty water
Roof leaks, window failures, and water coming in under a door are a different category from a stalled wash.
That water is not clean. It has been over a roof, through insulation, down a wall, or across a floor, and it carries dirt, debris, and whatever it passed through on the way.
Bedding that has taken it in cannot simply be dried. Drying locks the contamination into the fill and leaves a smell that returns every time the air goes humid.
It needs a full wash at the highest temperature the label allows, a full detergent dose, and at least one extra rinse.
Shake and brush off loose grit and debris before it goes near a machine. Grit is hard on the machine and it grinds into the shell fabric through the whole cycle.
Wash it separately from everything else, since there is no reason to move that soil into the rest of the household laundry.
For anything that took in water from a sewer backup or standing floodwater, that is past a laundry decision and the honest answer is to replace it.
Mildew that has already started
Mildew announces itself by smell before you see it, and by the time grey or black speckling shows on the shell it has been growing a while.
Deal with the growth and the smell in one go rather than trying to cover either.
Take it outside and brush the surface growth off before washing, so it is not simply redistributed through the wash water.
Wash hot, as hot as the label permits, with a full detergent dose. Heat is the part that carries most of the work here.
One cup of white vinegar in a first cycle followed by a normal detergent wash as a second cycle deals with most established mildew smell. Oxygen bleach on that second cycle helps on whites and colourfast shells.
Then dry it fully in a dryer rather than on a line. Residual damp brings the smell straight back.
Mildew staining that survives two washes is usually in the fibre for good. The smell can be removed long after the stain cannot.
Preparing storm season bedding before the storm
Watch the forecast before starting a large load. A comforter is a several hour commitment between wash and dry, and starting one as a line of storms arrives is asking for everything above.
Keep one clean dry set of bedding put away and ready. If everything is in the wash when the power goes, there is nothing left to sleep in.
Store spare bedding off the floor and out of a room below grade. Water comes in low.
Keep a battery fan and a few old towels somewhere findable. Both are more use for wet bedding than anything else in the house.
If a serious storm is forecast, finish the laundry the day before rather than the day of. Storm season bedding routines are mostly a matter of timing rather than technique.
Afterward, check bedding stored in closets on outside walls and in garages. Leaks show up there first, and a stored comforter can absorb a slow drip for days before anyone notices.

This part of the country has a genuine severe storm season in spring, with hail, high wind, and outages that can run more than a day. An outage of that length turns a stalled wash from an inconvenience into a mildew problem, which is exactly why the first hour matters so much. Summer heat and humidity compress every timeline in this article. Warm damp air is the condition mould wants, and a wet comforter in a house with no power in July runs on a much shorter clock than the same comforter in a cool room. Air movement is the thing to prioritise, ahead of warmth.
Hard water is the quieter factor. Mineral rich water leaves deposit in bedding, deposit holds moisture and odour, and a comforter that has already been through a soured cycle rinses less cleanly here than it would in soft water. A smaller detergent dose and an extra rinse gives the rewash a better chance.

A comforter that soured in a stalled machine needs a full wash and a real rinse, and both come down to water volume.
