Detergent Formats: Liquid, Powder, Pods, and Sheets

The detergent aisle now offers the same job in four formats. Liquid, powder, pods, and the newer dissolving sheets. They cost wildly different amounts per load and the packaging explains almost none of the actual differences.

They are not interchangeable, and the right one depends on your water, your machine, and how you wash.

What is in all of them

Every detergent is built from the same handful of components. Surfactants do the actual cleaning by letting water and oily soil mix. Enzymes break down specific soils, protein and starch and fat, each with its own enzyme. Builders soften the water so the surfactants are not wasted binding to minerals. Then brighteners, fragrance, and preservatives.

The format mostly changes the ratio, the dose control, and what has to be left out.

Liquid

The default, and reasonable for most households.

Dissolves reliably in cold water, which is its real advantage and the reason it took over. Works well as a pretreatment straight onto a stain. Gentle on colors.

The weaknesses are real though. Liquid is mostly water, so you are paying to ship water and storing a heavy jug. It is weaker on builders than powder, so it underperforms in hard water. And the cap is a terrible measuring device, which is why over-dosing is nearly universal.

Roughly two tablespoons for a normal load in an HE machine. Most people pour three or four times that.

Powder

Older, cheaper per load, and better than its reputation.

Powder holds more builders and more oxygen bleach because those ingredients are not stable sitting in liquid for a year. That makes it the strongest option on hard water, on whites, and on mud and clay soils.

The catch is dissolving. Powder needs warm water and agitation to go into solution, and in a cold wash it can leave gritty residue in the fabric and sludge in the dispenser. If you wash cold and use powder, dissolve it in a cup of warm water first and pour that in.

Chicago area water comes from Lake Michigan and carries a fair amount of mineral. Powder is a better match for that than most people assume.

Pods

Convenient, expensive, and the format with the most caveats.

The dose is fixed, which is the whole appeal. No measuring and no over-pouring. Concentrated, so nothing heavy to store.

But a fixed dose is only correct for a normal sized, normally soiled load. A small load gets too much and a heavily soiled large load gets too little, and there is no adjusting. The film needs enough water and enough time to dissolve, so pods fail on cold quick cycles and leave undissolved residue on clothes.

Put the pod in the empty drum first, before the clothes, never in the dispenser drawer.

Pods also cost roughly two to three times per load what liquid does. And they are the reason detergent is now a genuine household poisoning risk for small children, since they look like candy. If there are young kids in the house, this is a real consideration and a locked cabinet is the minimum.

Sheets

The newest format, marketed hard on plastic-free packaging and light shipping. Both of those claims are legitimate.

The cleaning performance is the open question. A sheet holds very little material by weight, and independent testing has generally found sheets underperform liquid and powder on heavy soil and on stains. For lightly worn clothing they are adequate. For work clothes, towels, or anything actually dirty, they are not.

They also tend to be light on enzymes and builders, which is exactly what you need in hard water.

Reasonable choice if your priority is packaging and your laundry is not very dirty. Not a good primary detergent for a family.

The HE question, which matters more than format

Whatever format you pick, it has to say HE if your machine is high efficiency, which nearly all machines sold in the last fifteen years are.

HE detergent is low-sudsing. Standard detergent in an HE machine produces suds that cushion the tumbling action the machine relies on to clean, so it washes worse, and the excess does not rinse out because there is not enough water.

This single thing causes more laundry complaints than the choice between liquid and powder ever will.

Choosing, in one paragraph each

Hard water, whites, heavy soil: powder, dissolved first if you wash cold.

Cold washing, colors, everyday family laundry: HE liquid, measured with an actual tablespoon rather than the cap.

Convenience above cost, no small children, warm cycles: pods, in the drum first.

Packaging priority, light soil only: sheets, with something stronger kept for the dirty loads.

And regardless of format, add half a cup of washing soda to loads in hard water. It boosts whatever detergent you use and it is cheaper than upgrading the detergent.

What no detergent fixes

Detergent cannot compensate for a machine that has buildup in it, because a load washed in a drum with residue picks that residue up. It also cannot compensate for too little water relative to soil, which is the limit a household machine runs into on heavily soiled or bulky loads.

The machines at our self-service laundry on West 95th Street move considerably more water per cycle, so detergent has room to work and residue leaves with the water rather than settling back into the fabric.

Our machines and the store are cleaned daily, which is the other half of it. Fresh detergent in a machine with buildup is money spent against the machine rather than against the laundry.

The short version

Powder holds the most builders and oxygen bleach, so it is strongest on hard water, whites, and heavy soil, but it needs warm water to dissolve. Liquid dissolves reliably in cold and works as a pretreatment, but it is weaker on hard water and the cap causes chronic over-dosing. Pods fix the dosing and cost two to three times more, fail on cold quick cycles, and are a poisoning risk with small children in the house. Sheets are light on enzymes and adequate only for lightly soiled loads. Whatever you choose, it has to say HE, and half a cup of washing soda does more in hard water than upgrading detergent does.
