Starch, and How to Use It Without Flaking

Starch has largely fallen out of household use, which is a shame, because it does something no other laundry product does and it is genuinely useful on a small number of garments.

What it does

Starch is a natural polymer, normally from corn or wheat. Applied to fabric and then heat set with an iron, it forms a thin rigid film that coats and stiffens the fibres.

That film does three things. It creates crispness, which is the reason people use it. It holds a press, so a collar stays sharp through a day rather than wilting. And it forms a barrier, so dirt and body oil land on the starch rather than in the fibre and come out in the next wash.

That third one is the underrated benefit. Starched collars and cuffs stay cleaner and last longer, because the grime never reaches the cotton.

Starch, sizing, and fabric finish

Three different products, and people use the names interchangeably.

Starch is the traditional one. Maximum crispness, washes out completely each time, and must be reapplied.

Sizing is synthetic and lighter. It adds body rather than stiffness and is better on fabrics you want to hold shape without going rigid.

Fabric finish is lighter still and mostly helps with ironing rather than adding structure.

For a dress shirt collar, use starch. For a linen jacket or a curtain, use sizing.

Using it properly

The technique determines whether you get a crisp shirt or a flaking, shiny mess.

Only ever on clean fabric. Starch over a dirty garment seals the dirt in and it will not come out.

Spray lightly and evenly, from about a foot away. Heavy application is what causes flaking and white residue.

Let it absorb for a few seconds before the iron touches it. Ironing immediately makes it sit on the surface and scorch.

Build in layers. Two light coats with ironing between them give a far better result than one heavy coat.

Iron on the wrong side where you can, especially on dark fabric, since starch plus heat on the right side produces shine.

Work the collar and cuffs first, while the iron is at its cleanest.

What goes wrong

White flaking, which is too much product or not enough absorption time.

A shiny patch, which is the iron pressing starch directly into the surface. Use a pressing cloth.

Sticking, which means the iron plate has starch residue on it. Clean the plate.

Brown scorch marks, which is heat too high for the fibre with starch present.

And stiffness that feels unpleasant rather than crisp, which is simply too much.

What not to starch

Anything with elastane, since the film fights the stretch.

Knitwear, which is not meant to hold a shape.

Anything being stored for a long period. This is the important one: starch is a carbohydrate and insects eat it. A starched shirt put away for a season is considerably more attractive to silverfish and moths than an unstarched one. Wash starch out before long-term storage.

And dark fabrics you cannot iron from the reverse, where the shine risk is high.

Making your own

A tablespoon of cornflour dissolved in a little cold water, then stirred into a pint of hot water and cooled into a spray bottle.

It works, it costs almost nothing, and it has no propellant or fragrance, which suits sensitive skin.

Shake it before each use, since it settles, and make it fresh every week or two because it will go off.

The alternative for most people

Honestly, most shirts do not need starch. Most of what people want from it comes from ironing a shirt while it is still slightly damp, which presses far better than a dry one.

Starch earns its place on formal shirts, uniform shirts, restaurant and service wear, and table linens, and on garments where the barrier effect genuinely extends the life of a collar.

The Mesquite part

The humidity swing here is the local factor and it works directly on starch.

Starch is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. In a humid North Texas summer, a starched collar softens through the day as it takes up ambient moisture, which is why the crisp shirt you left the house in is wilted by mid afternoon.

The practical answer is a slightly heavier application in humid months, applied in layers rather than one heavy coat, and pressing as close to wearing as practical rather than the night before.

The winter and early spring dry stretches are the opposite, and starch holds beautifully then with a lighter hand.

Storage is the other local consideration. Warm humid conditions plus a carbohydrate coating is exactly what silverfish look for, so the rule about washing starch out before storing anything for the season matters more here than in a dry climate.

Hard water is a minor third factor: mineral residue in fabric makes starch adhere unevenly, so shirts that come out of the wash with deposits in them starch patchily. Washing soda in the wash sorts that out.

Starting from a properly rinsed shirt

Starch only works on genuinely clean fabric, and a shirt carrying detergent residue takes it unevenly and goes grey at the collar regardless of how well you press it.
