
Clothes that come out of the washer still dirty feel like a machine problem. Usually the machine is fine and something upstream of it is wrong.
There is a short list of causes, and they are worth working through in order, because the most common one is also the easiest to fix.
Start with the load size
Overloading is behind more of this than everything else combined.
Washing machines clean by moving clothes through water and against each other. Clothes packed into a drum cannot move, so the load rotates as a single mass and the items in the middle barely get wet.
The test: after loading, you should be able to lay a flat hand on top of the load and still have room above it. If the drum looks comfortably full, it is too full.
This is worse on high efficiency machines, because they use much less water and rely almost entirely on clothes rubbing against each other. Take one thing out and see whether the problem disappears.
Then the detergent, in both directions
Too little is the obvious possibility. Too much causes the same symptom and is far more common.
Excess detergent creates suds, and suds cushion the mechanical action the machine depends on. Clothes float and slide instead of rubbing. The load also cannot rinse properly, so residue stays in the fabric, and residue attracts dirt faster on the next wear. Clothes then get dirty sooner, which reads as the wash not working.
For a normal load in a high efficiency machine, roughly two tablespoons of liquid. Measure it once with an actual spoon rather than the cap, and most people are surprised.
Check the format too. Powder needs warm water to dissolve and leaves gritty residue in a cold wash. Pods need enough water and time, and they fail on short cold cycles. And if the machine is high efficiency, the detergent has to say HE.
Then the water temperature
Cold water does not dissolve body oil, and body oil is the main soil in most everyday laundry. It is what makes collars yellow, towels smell, and athletic wear come back to life the moment you warm up.
If everything in the house is washed cold, that alone explains a lot of not-quite-clean.
Run towels, sheets, socks, underwear, and gym clothes warm. Save cold for lightly worn items and for protein stains, where heat sets the stain permanently.
Also worth knowing: what the dial says and what reaches the drum are frequently different, since the machine mixes household hot and cold rather than heating water itself.
Then the cycle you chose
Quick cycles are genuinely quick, and time in water is part of how detergent works. A fifteen minute cycle is for lightly worn clothing, not for anything actually soiled.
Use the normal or heavy cycle for a real load, and use the soak or prewash option for anything set in. Soak is the most ignored setting on most machines and it does more for a stubborn stain than switching detergent ever will.
Then the machine itself
If all of the above is right, now suspect the equipment.
The dispenser drawer. Pull it all the way out and look at the housing behind it with a flashlight. If the jets are coated in sludge, detergent is not reaching the drum reliably and you are washing with a fraction of what you poured.
Detergent left in the compartment at the end of a cycle is the clearest single sign of this.
The drain pump filter, behind the small panel at the bottom front. A restricted filter means dirty water drains slowly and partially redeposits.
Buildup in the drum. A machine with a residue problem transfers that residue onto every load. If clothes come out smelling faintly of something that is not your detergent, that is what you are smelling. Run an empty hot cycle with two cups of white vinegar or a machine cleaning tablet.
The inlet screens, where the hoses connect at the back. They catch sediment, and a partially blocked screen means the machine fills too slowly and shortchanges the wash.
The Houston-specific one
Hard water deserves its own line, because it produces exactly this symptom and people rarely connect the two.
Calcium and magnesium bind with detergent, and detergent that is busy binding to minerals is not available to lift soil. The visible effect is clothes that come out dull, towels that feel stiff, and whites that have gone grey without ever being stained.
The usual response is more detergent, which makes the residue worse. The better response is half a cup of washing soda in the wash, which handles the minerals and lets your normal dose do its job.
When it is the machine’s capacity, not its condition
Sometimes everything is set correctly and the load is simply more than the machine has water for. Heavily soiled work clothes, anything with grit or sand, a load of towels that has gone flat, bedding that needs a real soak.
Soil leaves with the water, so the ratio of water to dirt is the whole thing.

The short version
Work through it in order. Overloading is the most common cause, so load until a flat hand still fits above the clothes. Too much detergent causes the same symptom as too little, because suds cushion the rubbing action the machine cleans with. Cold water does not dissolve body oil, so run towels and worn clothing warm. Quick cycles are for lightly worn items only. If all that is right, check the dispenser housing, the drain pump filter, and whether the drum has buildup. In hard water, add washing soda rather than more detergent.
