Michigan spreads a great deal of salt on its roads, and by February a fair amount of it has made the trip from the pavement to your bedroom floor.<\/p>\n

It arrives on boots, on pant hems, on the dog, and on the bags you set down inside the door. It dries, it turns to dust, it gets walked into carpet, and it becomes airborne every time someone crosses the room. The bed is the largest horizontal surface it has to land on.<\/p>\n

Most people never connect winter grit to their bedding. It shows up instead as sheets that feel gritty by Thursday and a bedroom that seems dusty no matter how often it gets cleaned.<\/p>\n

Why road salt is worse than ordinary dirt<\/h2>\n

Three things make it a different problem.<\/p>\n

It is abrasive.<\/strong> Salt crystals and the sand mixed in with them are hard and angular at a small scale. Ground into fabric by ordinary movement, they cut fibers. Bedding that gets a winter of grit worked into it wears measurably faster.<\/p>\n

It attracts moisture.<\/strong> Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls water vapor out of the air and holds onto it. Fabric carrying salt residue stays damper than the same fabric without it. In a house running forced-air heat all winter that is a small effect, and it works against the dryness you are otherwise fighting.<\/p>\n

It leaves a mark.<\/strong> The white rings on boots and pant hems are salt crystallizing as the water evaporates. On bedding it shows up as a faint chalky stiffness rather than a visible ring, but it is the same residue.<\/p>\n

Stop it at the door<\/h2>\n

Everything else on this list is downstream of this one.<\/p>\n

Two mats, not one.<\/strong> A coarse scraper mat outside and an absorbent one inside. One mat catches a fraction of what two catch, and the pair is the single highest-value change in a Michigan winter.<\/p>\n

Shoes off, immediately, in a designated spot.<\/strong> A boot tray with a lip, so the meltwater and the salt it carries stay in the tray rather than soaking into the floor and drying into dust.<\/p>\n

Do not carry salted clothing through the house.<\/strong> Pant hems and coat sleeves collect it. Shake them off in the entry rather than in the bedroom.<\/p>\n

Wipe the dog down.<\/strong> Paws and belly. Salt is also an irritant to them, so this one has a second benefit.<\/p>\n

Getting it out of bedding<\/h2>\n

Salt dissolves readily in water, which makes this easier than it sounds. What it needs is enough water and enough rinsing, not a stronger detergent.<\/p>\n

Shake bedding out before it goes near the machine<\/strong>, and do it outside. Shaking it out indoors puts the grit back into the room you are standing in.<\/p>\n

Run an extra rinse<\/strong> on bedding through the winter. This is the whole trick for salt. The dissolved salt has to be carried away rather than left in the water that stays in the fabric.<\/p>\n

Add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle.<\/strong> It handles the salt residue and the mineral deposits together, and it removes the detergent buildup that makes cotton feel stiff.<\/p>\n

Wash warm rather than cold.<\/strong> Cold water dissolves both salt and detergent less efficiently, and it does not remove the body oil that is also accumulating.<\/p>\n

Do not overload.<\/strong> A packed drum cannot rinse, and rinsing is the entire mechanism here.<\/p>\n

The other half of the winter problem<\/h2>\n

The grit is one thing. The dryness is the other, and they compound.<\/p>\n

Cold air holds almost no moisture, and heating it to seventy drives indoor relative humidity down hard. A heated Michigan house in January frequently runs drier than the desert. That means more static, and static is what makes fine grit and dust cling to fabric rather than fall off it.<\/p>\n

It also means your skin dries out and sheds more, adding to what is already accumulating in the bed.<\/p>\n

A bedroom humidifier at 30 to 40 percent helps all of it. Do not go higher than that in this climate, because above roughly 40 percent you get condensation on window glass and inside exterior wall cavities, and that becomes mold where you cannot see it. If the windows are sweating, turn it down.<\/p>\n

For the static specifically, skip dryer sheets, which leave a coating that reduces absorbency. Wool dryer balls do the job without adding anything, and the real fix is to stop over-drying. Static appears in the last stretch of a cycle once fabric has gone past dry into bone dry.<\/p>\n

Winter wash schedule<\/h2>\n

Weekly for sheets, and more often if the bedroom is where coats and bags end up.<\/p>\n

Vacuum the mattress once during the winter with an upholstery attachment. Grit that settles into a mattress stays there, and the mattress is the one item you cannot launder.<\/p>\n

Wash the comforter at least once mid-winter rather than waiting for spring. It is the largest surface on the bed and it collects the most.<\/p>\n

Wash the entry rugs and boot tray mats monthly through the season. They are doing the actual work and they are the item nobody thinks to launder.<\/p>\n

Where the volume gets handled<\/h2>\n

Winter bedding is bulkier than summer bedding, and everything needs more rinsing rather than less. A home washer packed with a flannel set plus a comforter cannot rinse it, which leaves both the salt and the detergent in the fabric. That combination is what produces sheets that feel gritty and stiff at the same time.<\/p>\n

The machines at our self-service laundry on South Cedar<\/a> move considerably more water per cycle and have the drum size for a full winter set including the comforter to tumble freely. For salt specifically the water volume is the whole point, since getting it out is a rinsing problem rather than a cleaning one.<\/p>\n

Entry rugs and heavy mats go in the same trip, and those are items most household machines should not be taking anyway.<\/p>\n

Road salt reaches the bedroom on boots and pant hems, and it is abrasive, it holds moisture, and it leaves residue. Stop most of it with two mats and a boot tray by the door. Shake bedding out outdoors, wash warm, and run an extra rinse with vinegar, because salt is a rinsing problem rather than a detergent problem. Run a humidifier at 30 to 40 percent and no higher.
