Running a load again feels free. It is not the machine that pays for it, it is the clothes, and the bill arrives slowly enough that nobody connects the two. A rewash is a second full cycle of agitation, a second dose of detergent and a second exposure to heat, and a garment only has so many of those in it.

A second cycle is a second full dose of wear
Clothes wear out in the wash more than they wear out on a body, and the mechanism is friction.
During a cycle, fabric is pushed against fabric and against the drum thousands of times. Fibres on the surface break, work loose and leave with the water.
That is what lint is. Lint in the screen is your clothing in very small pieces, and every cycle produces some of it.
A garment has a working life measured in wash cycles rather than in months, and a rewash spends two of them where one was budgeted.
So a household that rewashes a load once a month is ageing that part of the wardrobe noticeably faster than it needed to.
The wear is not spread evenly either. Collars, cuffs, hems and seams take the most abrasion, which is why those are the places a shirt fails first.
Where the colour goes
Dye leaves fabric two ways, and both happen on every cycle.
Loose surface dye washes off, which is why a new dark garment bleeds for the first few washes and then settles down.
Underneath that, dye leaves with the fibre itself. Every fibre abraded off the surface takes its colour away with it, so fading is partly a friction effect rather than a purely chemical one.
That is why a garment fades without ever meeting bleach, and why the faded areas are the high friction ones.
Detergent adds to it. Optical brighteners and alkaline detergent both shift colour over repeated exposure, and a second cycle is a full extra exposure.
Dark cotton, deep reds and anything dyed rather than pigment printed shows the cost of a rewash soonest.
Elastic does not recover
Elastane, spandex and rubber elastic in waistbands, cuffs and sock tops all fail the same way, by losing the ability to return to length.
Heat is the main enemy and agitation while wet is the second.
Elastic is at its most vulnerable when it is hot and wet, which describes a warm wash and the first half of a dryer cycle.
A rewash puts it through both again, and the loss is permanent. Nothing restores stretch once it has gone.
What you see is a waistband that sits loose, socks that slide down inside a shoe, and a fitted cuff that has stopped gripping.
Anything with a high elastane content, so sportswear, leggings, fitted shirts and underwear, is the category that pays most for an extra cycle.
Two trips through a dryer
If a rewash goes through a dryer as well, the heat exposure doubles along with the agitation.
Heat is harder on fabric than water is. It shrinks cotton, weakens elastic, sets any stain still present and softens the adhesive under an applied print.
Cotton shrinks a small amount on each hot dry until the weave has taken up all the slack it has, and every extra cycle moves that along.
Wool felts. Once the fibres have locked together a jumper is a size smaller permanently.
Synthetics pill, because heat and tumbling raise fibre ends that then ball up on the surface.
Overdrying is the specific problem. A load put back through a full cycle when it needed twenty minutes gets cooked for the remainder of it.
Why most of a rewash is avoidable
Almost every rewash traces back to one of four things, and all four are decided before the machine starts.
The drum was too full, so the load did not move through the water and the middle of it came out barely washed.
Too much detergent, which will not rinse out and leaves a residue that reads as still dirty and smells stale.
Wet washing left in the drum for a day, which is not a cleaning failure at all. It is a scheduling failure and it always costs a full extra cycle.
A stain that needed treating first and went in whole, and once that has been through hot water it may not come out at all.
Fixing those four is unglamorous and it removes most of the reruns a household does.
Getting the load right the first time
Fill the drum to about three quarters and no further. There should be room to lay a hand flat on top of the load.
Measure detergent against load size and water hardness rather than filling the cap. The cap is generous by design.
Treat stains before the load rather than after it. Cold water, a little detergent worked in, and a few minutes of waiting.
Sort by soil level as well as by colour. Heavily soiled items mixed with lightly soiled ones means one group gets undertreated whatever you set.
Get the washing out of the drum as soon as the cycle ends. A timer on a phone solves the most common cause of reruns outright.
Add a rinse rather than adding detergent when the water is hard, since rinsing is what carries residue away.
And check the machine itself. A washer that has developed a smell passes it to every load, and no amount of running things again fixes that. A hot empty cycle with machine cleaner and a wipe round the door seal does.
When running it again is the right call
There are cases where a rewash is correct and hesitating costs more than the cycle does.
Anything that came out still visibly soiled. Wearing it sets the soil further and makes the next attempt harder.
A load that sat wet long enough to smell. That smell does not air out, and it transfers to whatever the item touches.
A colour bleed, where something red has run into a light load. Running it again immediately while everything is still wet gives a real chance of lifting it, and drying it first sets the stain permanently.
Anything that went through with a tissue, a pen or a crayon left in a pocket.
A load washed with far too much detergent, which needs a plain rinse cycle rather than a full wash. That is the cheap version of a rewash and it is often all that is required.
The distinction is simple enough. Run it again when something is actually wrong with the result, and not because you are unsure or because the load smells faintly of the machine.
The Westminster part
Two local conditions push the rewash rate up here, and both are about water and air rather than about anything anyone is doing wrong.
Hard water is the first and it is the main reason loads seem to need doing twice. Minerals bind with detergent before the detergent ever reaches the fabric, so part of every dose gets spent on the water instead of the clothes. What stays behind is a deposit that makes towels stiff and darks look grey, and the natural response is to add more detergent, which leaves more deposit and makes the next load look worse still.
The answer is the opposite of the instinct. Use a detergent built for hard water, dose smaller rather than larger, and add a rinse. Half a cup of washing soda in the wash deals with the hardness itself, and vinegar in the rinse takes the deposit back out of towels.
Dry air at altitude is the second factor and it is mostly on your side. Clothes air dry quickly here, so there is less pressure to lean on a dryer, and cutting dryer cycles is the largest single reduction in wear available to anybody. Take a load out damp and finish it on a rail.
Cold winters bring heavier clothing into the wash, and heavy garments are the ones that suffer most in a packed drum. A fleece or a thick jumper needs room to move, and a crowded winter load is the one most likely to come out needing another pass.
Where a load comes out right the first time
Most reruns are a rinsing problem, and rinsing is decided by how much water moves through the load.
