An electric blanket looks like bedding and behaves like an appliance. There is a grid of thin heating wire running through the whole of it, and that one fact changes every rule about washing, drying, folding and storage. Most heated blankets are not worn out when they stop working. They are broken, and almost always at a crease.

What is actually inside heated blankets
Open one up and there is a network of insulated resistance wire sewn into channels between the two layers of fabric, running the length and the width of the blanket in one continuous loop.
The wire is thin, closer to a heavy fishing line than to a lamp cord, and it joins a detachable controller at a connector on one corner.
Newer ones carry a temperature sensor along the same run, which is what lets the controller hold a steady warmth instead of switching hard on and off.
All of that is built to bend. None of it is built to bend in the same place a thousand times.
The fabric part is ordinary and it is not what limits the life of heated blankets. The wiring is, and everything sensible about caring for one follows from that.
The useful way to picture it is a low voltage appliance wearing a fleece cover, rather than a blanket that happens to have a plug on it.
Read the label before you do anything else
Some heated blankets are fully machine washable. Some are hand wash only. Some say plainly that they must never be put in water at all, and all three sit on the same shelf in the same shop looking identical.
The label is usually sewn into a side seam and it is short. It gives the water temperature, the cycle, whether a spin is allowed, and how the thing is to be dried.
If the label has gone, look the model up rather than guessing. Manufacturers publish this and the answer is specific to the model rather than general.
Older heated blankets, meaning anything past about ten years, are more likely to fall into the do not immerse group, and older wiring is less tolerant of getting wet even where the fabric would take it.
There is no single rule covering all heated blankets, which is exactly why so many get ruined by somebody applying a perfectly sensible rule learned from a different blanket.
Warranty terms usually spell the same thing out, and washing one against the instructions ends the cover whether or not the blanket survives the cycle.
The controller comes off first, every time
Unplug it from the wall, then separate the controller from the blanket at the connector on the corner.
The controller holds the electronics and it never gets washed, wiped with anything soaking, or left somewhere it can be splashed.
Look at the connector on the blanket before it goes near water. It should be clean and dry, and most makers say to keep it clear of the water rather than letting it soak.
If the cord between the controller and the blanket is fixed rather than detachable, the blanket is almost certainly one of the ones that must never be immersed. A detachable controller is the design that allows washing in the first place.
Dry the connector completely before reconnecting anything.
Never plug a damp blanket in to hurry the drying along. That is the single worst thing done to heated blankets and it is common.
Why folding is what actually breaks them
The failures people describe in heated blankets are all the same failure. One patch stops warming, or the whole thing cuts out after a few minutes, or half of it heats and half stays cold.
That is a broken conductor, and a broken conductor is nearly always sitting on a fold line.
A crease puts a sharp bend into the wire at one point. Do it once and nothing happens. Do it in the same spot every morning for a season and the metal fatigues and eventually parts.
A break can be complete or intermittent, and intermittent is the worse of the two, because the wire heats, cools, heats again and works the surrounding section harder each time.
Tucking is the same damage in another form. A blanket jammed hard down the side of a mattress holds a tight permanent bend along that edge for months.
So does sitting on a folded blanket, and so does anything heavy resting across a crease while it is switched on.
Roll it instead of folding it. Where rolling is impossible, at least move where the folds land so no single line takes all of it.
Washing one that is rated for it
The method for washable heated blankets is short and gentle from start to finish, and the gentleness is the point rather than a nicety.
Soak for ten or fifteen minutes in cool water with a small amount of mild detergent, where the label allows a soak at all.
Wash on the shortest cycle the machine offers, in cool water, on the delicate setting. Two to five minutes of actual wash time is what most makers specify, which is far shorter than any default cycle.
Use less detergent than you would for bedding the same size. Residue is hard to rinse out of a quilted layer and it holds moisture against the wiring afterwards.
No bleach, no fabric softener, and no stain remover left sitting on it while you get on with something else.
Spin briefly on the lowest speed available, or skip the spin entirely if the label says to. A hard spin wraps the blanket around the drum and puts precisely the sharp bend into the wire that everything else here is trying to avoid.
Never wring one by hand. Twisting does in ten seconds what a year of folding does.
Drying, which is air and nothing else
Lay it flat, or hang it across two lines rather than one, so the weight is spread and no single crease carries the whole wet blanket.
Two lines matters more than it sounds. A soaked blanket over a single line takes a hard bend at that line under the full load of the water it is holding.
Pull it back to square while it is damp, straightening the edges gently so the wire channels sit parallel again.
No dryer. Even a low tumble bends the wire over and over, and the warmth softens the insulation around it.
No iron at any temperature, no radiator, no hot press, and no heater pointed at it to speed things up.
A few labels allow a couple of minutes of no heat tumbling to fluff it up, followed by air drying. Do what the label says and nothing beyond it.
It has to be completely dry before it is plugged in again, and a thick quilted blanket takes longer than it looks. Give it a full day and check the middle rather than the corners.
The seasonal check and when to retire one
Before the first cold night, spread it out on a bed in good light and go over the whole surface with both hands.
Look for scorch marks or discoloured patches, which mean a spot has been running hotter than the rest of it.
Feel for hard lumps, kinks, or places where the wire has bunched inside its channel, all of which mean the channel has been damaged.
Check the cord and the connector for fraying, cracked insulation, bent pins, or any browning around the plug.
Run it on low for ten minutes with nothing lying on top and feel across it for cold zones and hot spots.
Anything that fails that check is finished. Heated blankets are not repaired at home, and taping a damaged cord or stitching a torn channel is not a repair, it is a delay.
Most makers put the working life at somewhere around ten years. Rolled loosely in a breathable bag, on a shelf and not underneath anything, is what gets one there.
The Cincinnati part
The heating season here is long. A blanket that goes on the bed in October is often still there in April, which is six months of nightly handling and six months of the same crease being made in the same place. That is why heated blankets fail from wire breaks in this part of the country rather than simply wearing thin.
Cold snaps bring the other half of the problem. When the temperature drops hard, people pile quilts and comforters on top, and weight sitting on an electric blanket is a genuine issue. It presses the wiring down into the mattress, holds heat against one area, and pushes the controller into cycling harder than it was designed to. The blanket goes over the sheet and under nothing heavy.
Summers here are humid, and that decides where it spends the off season. A basement or an unheated garage holds damp air for months, and a quilted blanket sitting in that picks up a musty smell by autumn and corrosion at the connector. A closet inside the heated part of the house is a much better place for it.
Water in this area runs moderately hard, and mineral deposit in a thick quilted item is what makes a washed blanket come out stiff. A smaller dose of detergent and an extra rinse deals with it. The stiffness matters beyond appearance, because stiffer fabric creases harder, and harder creases are what break the wire.
Where a blanket that size actually washes
A full size electric blanket in a home washer is a packed drum, and a packed drum is where the folding damage happens.

An electric blanket is an appliance with heating wire running through it, so read the label first, because some are washable and some must never go in water. Unplug and remove the controller and keep it dry.
